Well I know absolutely nothing about the Final Fantasy series. I was wondering if someone could explain to me what it's about and why so many people like it? I know it's an RPG so that's kind of why I haven't been interested in it. Suppose I shouldn't judge like that.

HELP me to understand and maybe my mind will be changed as I know of several people to be addicted to the Final Fantasy games. I hear all the games are different though (I think), so could be hard to explain ARGH!

Well, I'll be glad to help you understand it, Grant. :)

The Final Fantasy series started with the original Final Fantasy on the NES, people refer to this as FFI. This was to be the start of one of the most poupular gaming series ever known. It was an RPG and incorperated a turn-based battle system, which gave time for players to select to use a physical attack or magic--

--I'm rambling, so I'll cut this short. :P

Yes, every game is different, there has never been a direct sequel to an FF game in its history (but that is soon to change if you look in the FFX-2 thread). But of course, all of FF games are similar, the random battle style, the great stories, and you can't forget the all of the trademark characteristics (such as Chocobos and those damn annoying Marlobos).

Hmm.. I guess you'll want to know why people like the series so much. Well, the interaction with the characters in each game is very good. You kinda get to know them and know how they'll react to certain situations. There is some pretty funny humour and very moving moments in the games too, which comes from you getting attached to the characters.

This sounded.. rambly, sorry. But I hope I helped. :)

Final Fantasies have long stories, with characters you can easily recognise with, and understand. And each one has its own twist, be it the system (like the EsperMateria/Junction/Magic Stone systems etc.) or the any other odd little things.

And yeah, it takes about 2 hours of gaming before you actually can see past the turn-based battle systems.
(Or atleast it took me that long) o_o'

And the FMVs are for each Final Fantasy are way ahead their time
(Eh...the ones that have 'em) o_o'

WOW it does sound pretty interesting I must say. I'm not a big fan of turned based I do like my action/shooting games, but if it's addictive to everyone else I think I should buy at least one and see what it's like.

Do you ever get lost and stranded without anything to do though? I usually give up when that happens you see, because I get bored easily.

I hear there are loads of moves, items and magic is it really confusing? Is it like pokemon in anyway as in enemies having weaknesses or just an all out battle knocking off your enemies HP?

Also as a beginner what do you think would be the best game to start of with? One of the newer ones being released or an old one?

Thanks for your help ... Grant :demon:

For a beginner, I'd say take on FF7.
Mainly because I thought it was very very very nice :)

Actually, because it is neither too difficult, nor too hard, and it doesn't seem to rely on graphics, and yet has decent enough graphics not to put you off the whole game (as a beginner).
And it has lotsa sidequests too, and it's a cheap and easy buy :)

Although you might wanna try FF8, or 9, or maybe even 10.
Depends on what you're like, I guess...

Hmm...FF7 is pretty easy. FF9 is made for beginners and younger players, in my opinion. As for myself, I started with FF8 (which many have probably seen me ranting about repeatedly here). It's more of a medium, and looks nicer than 7 or 9 (before you argue that 9 has better graphics...I prefer the not deformed charachters, so don't flame me!).

Yeah, you can become lost and not able to find your way out (Temple of the Ancients, Fossil Roo, etc.), but you can always post in here if you need any help, or ask someone over AIM. :)

Ah! Yes there are many moves and stuff! The commands you can get are like Attack, Magic, Item, Summon, but this differs with every game. But yes, there are loads of moves, for example; in FFVII, there is one Materia called the Enemy Skill Materia. This basically teaches you the move that the enemy attacks you with, and there are loads of these. Good fun collecting those. :)

And yeah, there are loads of weaknesses for enemies in the FF games. All of the elements (that I can think of right now) are: Ice, Fire, Water, Lightning, Dark, Holy, Earth and Wind. These are all effective against different opponents (yes, much like Pokemon, lol) and some don't even affect some monsters.

Hmm.. A game to recommend you.. I'd say FFX, it's good for beginners (since every one says it's so easy :P) and has very cool visuals and the battle system is pretty great too. :)

Edit: Actually, no, get FFVII or both VII and X. They're both very tasty, but I prefer FFVII myself. You may not, it depends if you are a person that goes for more realistic characters or weird. You decide. ^__^

Oh that's good as I like Pokemon games! :D Well I would go for say FFVII, but to be honest I never buy or play on PSX games anymore. I forgot to say, but if it is really that good I may have to bend the rules. Is FFX really short, because I don't like short games too many are being created lately! I know it has fewer disks or something. The moves sound confusing, but fun! :excited:

Does anyone recommend FF Chronicles or FFXI? Do you think they will be worth waiting for, because I will probably prefer newer versions to the series as better graphics, improved gaming hopefully and the fact I love COOL cut-scenes. If you say it's like Pokemon maybe I should get like the GBA version also that will be good. Now I'm interested I did some quick flicking through mags and I hear Chronicles looks a bit like FFIX and you can use GBA as a controller to link up. :whoops: As for FFXI it will be the first one in the series to go online and you can customize your own characters. Coolies!

Too much of a choice to make lol. Headache

Well, you can't really compare Crystal Chronicles to FFXI, simply because that one is completely different from the other. FFXI is a huge MMORPG and will include many different quests that you can take from people in towns and such. To help you with these quests you can ask other players to join your party, if I'm right I think you can have seven other players with you, apart from yourself.

The battle system is more your style as well, with a more "hack and slash" air about it (also called an Action RPG), so you actually control their moves.

Before you start the game, yes you can edit your character's clothes, face and race, but also define its class. This will determine what weapons your character can use and which (if any) magic it can use.

I would get FFXI if I were you, but before it comes out here, get FFVII. Make that PSX game an exception. ~_^

Now I also hear there is a FF Tactics Advance, but it's not going to be like the old PS game. It's supposed to be the best turn based on the GBA since Advance Wars, so I'll be likely to get that, Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire, maybe Chronicles (GBA), Metroid Fusion and also the Zelda one for GBA is going to be really good ARGH! I like RPGs on the GBA, but still not sure what to do hmmm?
I really doubt I would play FFVII if it's a PSX game, because that's what I'm like really, so it's really out of Chronicles, FFX, FFXI (hopes I get broadband sounds good stuff) or if it's that hard a choice wait for FFXII but maybe not lol.

Anyone know what would be the best GBA game? Plus more opinions about what you think please on those over games  I'm just a confused gamer really. p.s What do people here think of Kingdom Hearts as that also has FF in? Do you just find this as a mockery to the game with disney characters in or is it good?

Thanks :demon:

I say go for FFVII. in two words: It rocks! In how many other games do
the main character's love interest get killed
? The battle system is easy to learn and the Summon Cinemas are priceless! And just because it's easy doesn't mean it's short-lived... I've been playing it for 70+ hours now and still haven't beaten it! ((but I am on Disk 3, thank goodness))

Don't listen to Break, he's crazy ;) *looks at status*

Wanna know if you're gonna like the games or not? Why keep asking us the questions?

If i was in your position, i'd go out and buy FF Anthology. IT has 2 games, FFVI, and FFV. You'd want to play FFVI, perfect if you're starting off. It'll show you all the great qualities of the series. FFV isn't one of the bests, it could put you off the series if you aren't into RPG's... I highly recommend FFVI, even over FFVII.

If you want to start off, you have to go with the PSX.

Kingdom Hearts, it might be good since you like Action games. I still think FFVI over it though.

And for the GBA, go with Golden Sun and Breath of Fire, maybe FFT when it comes out, but you should get into RPG's a little before you tackle FFT, it's real hardcore RPG.

Alright, Alright I'll get it lol. It's probably only £5 or something a long the lines of that, but I definetely want a new one as well! So if anyone has information that can make my mind up please post. Also I could be interested in buying one of the GBA games they are making on FF (Tactics and Chronicles), but I'm not sure whether there is alot better games such as Legend of Zelda: A link to the past, Metroid fusion, Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire, Golden Sun: The lost age, etc.

What do you think ... Needs serious help too much excitement for one night and it's 3:05am here so better sleep on it.

Edit: Sorry I didn't see your last post. I would prefer to wait for the new GBA RPG's though. Yes I will get FFVII, maybe FFVI.

I'd recommend either FFVI or FFVII if you're just starting out. Sure, FFVI was originally on the SNES (you can get it in FF Anthology on the PSX, now), and FFVII is on the PSX, but you shouldn't judge games by how old they are, or by how good the graphics are. Both of these are incredible games, and are my top two favorites in the series. If you pass by these games just because they're a bit old, you'll be missing out on two of the greatest RPGs ever.

The new FF Tactics on the GBA, FFXI, and FFXII won't be out for quite awhile, so if you're going to wait for them, you could be waiting a long, long time. (Probably the least for the new FFT, but still, it'll be a while). Also, you should be aware that FFXI will almost definitely have a monthly fee, seeing as it's an online game.

If you like action/adventure type games, you'll probably love Zelda: A Link to the Past / Four Swords. (It's my absolute favorite game, though, so I may be just a bit biased, heh). If you want info on it, there's a thread about it in the Zelda forum. Likewise, you should be able to find threads about the other games in the Nintendo and Pokémon forums. Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire aren't coming out for a few months, though.

 • 3 weeks later...
*enjoys playing FFX*, I'm borrowing this of a mate and its really good and enjoyable. It may get a bit boring in parts and the cut scenes are quite long, but it's all assential to the game and its great storyline!

If some of the other FF games are better than I should be having lots and lots of fun! :excited:

Thanks again :)
