Yu Yu Hakusho!
I've had my PS2 for a year now and it's starting to cause problems. It won't play my freakin Crazy Taxi game! I've tried so many different things...even looked in the old PS2 box for the instruction manual. Nothing works. Does anyone else have this same problem? It's not a big deal that that one game doesn't play, but I don't want anything to happen to my PS2! I could care less abut Crazy Taxi in the first place....it just annoys me! 0_o
Semjaza
Well first of all... Make sure the disc is clean. That's the number one problem. The other thing would be to try cleaning the PS2 lens... They sell cleaner discs for that. Otherwise, in the PS2 menus, you can select diagnostic mode. It forces the PS2 to run between CDs or DVDs manually (or something like that), and does actually fix problems every once in a while. Other than that... dunno. Yu Yu Hakusho!
The disk is fine. Not one scratch on it. The PS2 is proably pretty dusty though....I'll have to go find a cleaning disk. And thank you for your help.
RicoTranzrig
Well, if it's just that one game it could be defective. I'd go with Semjaza's advice to use a lens cleaner, soft brush. I have one from Memorex and that works well. You could try doing the diagnostic option, but I think that only works with DVD movies where it adjusts your settings to make the DVD play. My friend's PS2 is so dusty that you need to use solvent and hard scrubbing to take the settled particles out of the plastic casing, but it still loads...eventually.
Rancid
Get a bottle of air and spray the insides.
Domon
Okay a question and a suggestion. 1. Do you play your PS2 standing vertically? now for the suggestion: Get a can of compressed air and spray a little bit of it in the front vent to clean it out and spray the fan in the back on that fan as well. It will help play the games better. I have to do that with my R.A.D. game i have to clean the vents so as that the system doesn't say. "Disc Read Error." Thats my suggestion. Semjaza
I have an almost launch PS2, and I've yet to have a single problem with it... What do you guys do to your systems? lol
ZeroBlade
No, don't do anything to it! If it only happens to this game, then the game might be damaged. However if it happens to all your games and even those that work take some time to load, then it means your lens is dirty. There is no cleaning kit out there that Sony trusts that will fix your problem. You best and only option is to sent it to Sony for repairs. If your warrenty ran out, send it in anyway. The reason why is because I had the same problem with my PS2 about 3 months ago. I called up Sony and they told me that the lens is most likely dirty. My warranty ran out for more than a year but they told me since it was my first time calling them up with a problem, that I haven't tampered with the PS2 at all (Mod chips ans such) and didn't use non-sony products on it they decided to waive the repair cost which I heard can go into the hundreds of dollars. They'll give you a special work order number and basically you send it to them back with that special work order number along with anything else they need. They'll send it back to you as if you just brought it: Cleaned, fully functional and a renewed warranty. I paid about $50 for the Overnight delivery service (hey I wanted it back ASAP) and the box I put the console in. It was pretty fast too. The Sony Rep told me it was gonna take about 6-8 before I get it back and received it back via UPS ground 2 weeks later. Sony says that the only real way to clean this thing is to keep it in a well ventilated area, use a vacuum on all of the ports of the system and cover the system with some kind of cloth. Since then I treated this thing as if it was gonna blow up and hasn't done anything unusal since. Also the only real function the Diagnostic feature does is boost the power of the reading lens on the PS2. It may be alot of work but its much better than using an unlicensed product to clean a DVD lens which is extremely sensitive as it is. It not worth the risk man. RicoTranzrig
For me, since the waranty is expired and I'm comfortable working with hardware, I open/take apart my PS2 and give it a light vacuum to get the excess dust and then use compressed air on the parts near the main processor, where it can get hot. Gladly, I only do it when it gets really dusty because it is time consuming, but you get everything clean again. I used to cover it with the plastic and styrafoam cover the system was wrapped in, but someone dumped it... So far, no real problems, except for a few DVD movies from Blockbuster that won't play because of damage on the disc...

It's horizontal. Flat on a shelf. Everyone is giving me such good help! When I put in Crazy Taxi, it reads "Disk Read Error." But not with my other games. Strange. ZeroBlade
If it only happens to Crazy Taxi then here's one more thing my may want to observe. Put in another game and time how long it takes for the PS2 to load/detect the game. Normally it takes about 5 seconds (and sometimes less)to read the CD. If it loads quick, then the game is damaged. If it takes longer then thats the sign the says the lens is dirty. Again there is no product out there that will safely clean it and the best solution is sending it to Sony. You can also try what Rico did but as he said its time consuming mainly because its a pain putting this thing back together.
Sniglefager
I have that problem with my DBZ Budokai. It always says Disk Read Error. Sometimes, it doesn't even read it at all. There are a few scratches, but not anything that bad. I tried cleaning the disk (with 100% cotton towel, but it still didn't work. My PS2 is horizontal as well, but it's only a month or so old. All my other games work, so I'm guessing the scratches are what's doing it. Is there any way to get the scratches off?
Semjaza
I play with my PS2 always vertical, and I seem to be the only one here that has never had a problem heh. Contrary to what Sony wants people to think (don't ever trust helplines 100%, they don't know everything and a lot of them will try to get you to send in your system if they can get money out of it. Recalibrating lenses is something that isn't hard to do, and Sony charges like $60 for it last I heard), you can use a CD/DVD cleaner. It does help according to people I know, although dusting with a can will help more overall. Sony used to say the same crap about PSX, and that was just a simple CD laser (not a combo one like PS2 uses). Excuse that long section of stuff in the perentheses lol. Domon
Okay this suggestion is a must do unless you want your PS2 to have a nice warm sheet of DUST! You should take a can of compressed air (i use the Enviro Duster air spray) and spray the vent on the front, not too much of a blast but just enough you get some air out, next spray the vent on the back, the one with the fan on it. Then insert your crazy taxi disc and then maybe your game should read, if not then i sugguest you take it to someone who knows a lot about CDs. I have a friend who played his Final Fantasy X disc a lot and then his sister played it as well. (They would play it for about 2-5 hours straight.) Well eventually the disc wouldn't read anymore so they guessed it had just burnt up while it was being played cause he could play his other games on the system, and plus he had used a whole ton of de-scratching items on the disc. I'd say take your Crazi Taxi disc to a pro and have him/her give you their opinion.

Domon
Hmmmm, maybe it burnt up in the system. I mean it could be ruined. Sorry i don't have anymore info.
