severous84
Usually I know beforehand whether or not something is worth getting. But, do you ever get a game that you thought was going to kick ***, but it ended up sucking? I have ? many times. Every once in awhile, though, I?ll get one that I?m skeptical about that ends up being surprisingly good, or even ends up as a favorite.
Schrat
Are you talking about Video games? Sport Games? Board Games, hehe? Plus I dont even think this belongs here...Not trying to be mean, this is actually a cool thread just in the wrong spot, and alil to broad... Phantom
True, but your not a mod. There have been countless times where I have been utterly surprised by a game. Ex Quest64. I thought it was going to be an awfully poor ripoff-type game. Obviously I was wrong. I rented it for 2 days to see what it was like and wound up keeping it for 7 just so I could beat it. I played it twice over... full of action and storyline.
Sara
Umm...CandyLand was a pretty good game. So was Snakes and Ladders. :toothy:
MysticBabe
well...i've gotten a game once not knowing a thing about it and it turned out to be good.

And that game would be? Anyway, I think the two latest Grand Theft Auto games have surpassed my expectations considerably. I could not forsee a GTA game in glorious 3D, which wouldn't have some kind of messed up, and uncomfortable controll system. However, if anything, these two (3 and Vice) make the original controlls seem difficult The graphics kick some serious butt too :p
Sniglefager
Well, I like Final Fantasy, a lot. Besides Mario, it's probably my favorite series. But FFX wasn't as good as I expected. I mean, no overworld? The stroy was great, but it was mainly just eye candy. Don't get me wrong, I still liked it, but not as much as other FF games. Surprisingly, I liked Kingdom Hearts better
Corey
About three hours ago I bought Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (The first, not second). I was hoping that it would be a good game. In only one way, it is. It has a good story. The graphics, even though they are old PSX graphics, are bad. I undestand that they are the best Silicon Knights could do but they give me a headache. For this I may sell it to my friend. The controlls are odd. It's too hard to make Kain move without hitting spikes or an enemy you were trying to get into range to hit. The game has to load to go into the inventory menu and to go to the world map. It's too much waiting. This game fell far short of my expectations. Spikey
I got Dark Cloud thinking it would be great. Turned out it was horrible. But the good game I got was Tekken 4.
Semjaza
I'm generally not surprised by how good a game is. I'm more often just disappointed. Probably the biggest disappointment I can think of was SaGa Frontier. Up until PSX, I was a pretty big Square fan. I owned most of what they put out on NES (even Rad Racer and that weird shooting knight game) and SNES (other than Mystic Quest). I was not overly fond of FFVII, but it was decent. I went to the store to get Breath of Fire III (I think it was new at the time), but they didn't have any copies. I grabbed SaGa Frontier instead, thinking that Square games are never that bad. God, was I wrong. SaGa Frontier is one of the worst RPGs I've ever had the misfortune of playing. The graphics are decent overall... Although the backgrounds in the fighting scenes suck horribly. The sound is quality in format, but has very uninteresting composistions. The characters are not interesting for the most part, there is little if any story (or even character interaction). The level up system, while kind of a good idea, was added in rather poorly with little explanation of how it worked. The areas were completely maze like, with little indication of what to do next. Those are just off the top of my head. The game is tedious and just not fun. Square also promised that each character's story would take around 10 to 30 hours. It's more like 2 to 3. It took me forever how to figure out how to actually give the vegetables to the delivery man. Also, nothing beats getting drunk in Harvest Moon 64. :p I guess the game I was most dissapointed with was Smackdown 3 : Just Bring for the PS2. The smackdown franchise is the reason I got a PS2 in the first place. I loved Smackdown 2 for the PSX so I figured this must be even better if it's on the PS2. I hooked up my PS2 as fast as possible, and slid the disc in. When I watched the beggining I was so happy. I was litterally jumping up and down in my seat. When I finally got to play, I was in shock. It was slow, dull, and it just felt stupid. ( Smackdown 4 made up for it though :D )
Tommy Vercetti
I bought tom clancey's ghost recon for ps2 and i thought it would kick *** but instead the controls were a bit strange and everytime i got like shot 3 times and died which was really pointless and i couldnt see the enemy anywhere. Also you have to control the alpha and bravo companies if you want them to move with you but i wish they would move on their own.
BigCajones
Well I was hearing loads of bad things about Dynasty Warriors 3, but heck I bought it anyway and it really suprised me. I got hooked on it and waited till I got every Dynasty character and nearly all the items. It did get a bit repetive, but was still fun. The two player mode is really fun to play with mates, but the vs mode weren't great. Dynasty Tactics is alrite too but I prefer the action to turn based games usually. I was disapointed with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. It got such good reviews and what I was playing at the time, well I couldn't disagree. Graphics brilliant, cut scenes amazing (very long though), and just great gameplay with a well thought out plot. This was all fine and dandy, but ten hours later I was like is that it...? I mean sure it's great making such a good game, but its lifespan was very short for me and most of my mates too. I didn't even bother collecting all the dog tags as it annoyed me. Lets hope Substance will make a vast improvement all these short game really are annoying. I must of watched as much cut scenes as I did actually play the game lol. Metal Gear Solid for PSX was awesome and still had long cut scenes, I hope to see the stop to these short lived games or else!!! :flaming: There were quite a few games that suprised me, but they were my examples. :)
severous84
For those of you who thought I meant board games or sports games, NO, just video games. Games I thought sucked were State Of Emergency and Stuntman. Games that surpassed would be VC, Dr. Muto, MOHF and Hitz. Still playin all of them. If you guys had to pick a game of the year for 2002, what would it be?
BigCajones
Well I don't know if this is based on any console but what the heck. I would say GTA VC was the best, but I hate it now as it has so many technical flaws. Then MGS2 I would choose, but that was way too short! I really enjoyed Resident Evil and SSB:M is such a classic game. I've even took an interest in The Getaway hmmm? My favourite game would have to be one of those or Halo it's too hard a decision for my small little brain! :demon:
severous84
Hey Big, what were the technical flaws in GTA VC? Just curious to see if I missed them. That's why I really dig finding games that are a little under the radar like Muto. Too much hype spoils the big releases for me but when you don't expect the world, usually a game ends up surprizing you. Any like that for you?
BigCajones
Yeah I agree. Hype spoils games big time! Well it's just on VC there are loads of glitches, and there is cheats that can totally mess up the game, so I don't know why they make cheats for the game. Mine won't load up so that's why I'm so annoyed with it, but its still an excellent game no doubt about it!
Axel--Ignition
Are we all forgetting about The Bouncer?! I wish I could! Every mag, every site, everything said that it would be the ultimate game for the PS2. When the game came out, I immediately got it and almost threw it away. It had the worst fighting system ever! Sure, the graphics were brilliant, they still stand up today... but all the music was ripped off of old horror movies! The story sucked (Did SquareSoft really make this?), the gameplay sucked, the music sucked... Can I point out anything (not including the graphics) that was acceptable? Acctually, all the first few runs of games for the PS2 were terrible, almost there for the specific reason to show off the PS2 awesome graphics. The only good old games for it were Tekken Tag Tournament, ZOE, Dynasty Warriors 2, and SSX.
Queen Asuka
I used to have a subscription to PSM, but ever since I let it run out, I haven't been as up to date on new games. So therefore I'm scared to buy them if I haven't played them beforehand. And that's why I don't own many games.
