TheShinje
Do you believe in backmasking? Do you think that subliminal messages could be implanted onto a record and heard when played backwards? I do. There is a reason i believe in backmasking. One day, I was surfing some sites to see if they had any information on it (I remember my parents talking about it's heday in the time of the record player) And it said that on the Eagles song Hotel california you could find this message "yay satan...he organized his own religion...when he knows he should, oh man it was delicious... he puts it into a vat and he gives it to his son which he gives away" Then I thought. My dad has an eagles record, I'll check it out. To this day, the memory sends a chill up my spine, for it was there, clear as crystal. :nervous: If you are familiar with the Backmasking theory, you would also know that the most infamous song for it "stairway to heaven" by led Zeppelin contains quie a few, including "heres to my sweet satan" and "the lord turned me off" Is this a Coincidence? I could beieve that if a vague spattering of one word happened once in a blue moon, but these are entire sentences. Play Michael Jacksons song "Beat it" backwards at the part where it says "the fire's in their eyes and there works are really clear so beat it" amd you will hear clearly "it was satan in myself with a guitar and a cigar". So I ask this of you. Do you believe that backmasking occurs, by coincidence or on purpose? If it is a coincidence, could it also be fueled by the fact that most backmasked artists have at some point had ties with Aleister Crowley, the man who started the church of Satan? Jimmy Paige (sp?) of Led Zeppelin actually bought Crowleys mansion, where Satanic rituals were held, and wrote the infamous Stairway to Heaven there. other wierd one, Mr Ed TV theme part way through backwards says "sing this song for satan Of course there are the lighter ones from the Beatles on the song "Rain"(not including the Paul McCartney is dead thing) who started it, and Pink Floyds "congratulations, you have found the secret message, please send you answer to old pink care of the funny farm" Not all backmasking is evil. Like The most recent Missy Elliot song where she reverses part of the song (thanks to the wonders of digital technology I can tell you it says "put my thing down flip it and reverse it) So, what do you think of backmasking? I would upload some samples for you, but OB doe snot support .wav files
Semjaza
Professionals who study music have gone and played those records backwards and found that there was no such thing in any of them. A long while back Ozzy (and I think Kiss) were taken to court over such things, and an audio designers testimony on that held up in court. The fact is, when people tell you what to listen for... you're brain is going to try to pick it out. There are of course songs that do it totally on purpose though. I know Manson has done it several times, and I'm sure there are countless others. Most of what is backmasked in his songs is nothing Satanic or strange... It's usually just parts of the chorus. James
I agree with Tony. Backmasking is almost like an old wives' tale, generally. Notice that the backwards message is always related to Satan? Gee, I wonder why people claim that. It wouldn't be to scapegoat music for society's ills, would it?
Guest cloricus
In some cases it could just be the artist doing it. It?s not really that hard to do sentences that sound like other things backwards. My friend and I had a little comp who could write the most song that sounded right played forward and sounded right played backwards. We're just amateurs but it really is easy... As for all the Satan stuff, yeah they can believe in what ever they want as long as it doesn't hurt any one, or thing.

Flash
The Song 'Backmask' by MSI really takes a stab at this, heh. It must be the only Backmasked song where playing it forwards is more offensive than playing it backwards, lol. Listening to it backwards, it starts with 'Don't listen to this Song', and then carries on with messages like 'Clean your Room', 'Do your homework', 'Don't stay out too late' and 'Eat your vegetables'. There's more, but I can't be bothered typing them, heh.
Hybrid
I never really thought about Blackmasking before until I read this topic, but I've heard about bad parents blaming Blackmasking for their lack in parenting skills when their child does somthing wrong. I personally don't see anything wrong with it, if artists want to write their songs in a way that if played backwards you can hear subliminal messages, its up to them, aslong as the track is good when played forward then I don't mind. Solo Tremaine
I think people read into these things too much. It's the 'cause and effect' thing. For example, a kid watches a violent film and then hits someone. The general assumption may be that he hit him because of the violent film. The fact that the other kid may have hit him earlier has nothing to do with it, of course. People love to have a scapegoat. According to The Simpsons, if you play 'Maybe I'm Amazed' backwards, you get a Lentil Soup recipe. I'm not sure if this is true, but they played it over the credits and you could hear something going backwards. Whether that was added in by them I don't know. but often I don't think people do it deliberately. There was a thing in Digimon a while ago (the dub's been taken over by Disney) that said that if you play the opening theme backwards you get messages like 'Disney's great' and things like that. I couldn't hear any of it. But even if people did do it, how is your brain supposed to hear it over the rest of the song and then be able to reverse and decipher it? It seems a little far-fetched to me.
