What is a GEEK?

Everyone has their own idea of what a "geek" is. Many people believe that a geek is someone who has huge glasses, is smart and has few friends. Others think "geeks" are the kids who are less "popular" than them. I'm starting to realize that no one is a "geek" and that everyone is different. Most people that make fun of people and who call people names are just as bad as someone who is shy and isolates themselves. Why did people start putting other people into "personality slates" ,if you will, before getting to know them? Will anyone ever figure this out? What are your ideas of what a "geek" is or how people see others in your schools?

Well, I personally dont consider anyone who's smart to be a geek. My main definition of geek is somethin thats stupid.

Say someone makes a stupid comment. I usually say "Fool, you are soo friggen geeky." or somethin like that. A geek to me can be anybody. Anyone that acts stupid is a geek in my opinion.

Sure, most people call those that wear big glasses, pins, and all that other stuff "geeks", "nerds" and stuff like that, but in the end, the people that call them that are truly the "geeks" because in the future...they could very well be YOUR boss and tell YOU what to do, when to do it, and how to do it.

So I dont consider those types of people geeks. I just consider anyone thats acts stupid(mainly those that are like drunk or somethin)to be the true geeks. Hope I didnt mess your mind up there. ^_^

Now I feel geeky.

Well if I had glasses I'd probably fit that description quite well, SuperMuffin.
Geeks I think are just a name for people who don't fit in quite well as others. And as you said, less popular.
So maybe the popular people just need something to go down upon them with.

Geek. Nerd. All the same thing. Though in my opinion I think its pointless.

Uhm, I'm not really sure about the whole "geek" thing. To me, "geek" and "dorky" are synonymns, and when I think something is dorky I think it looks awkward. Yes. So therefore, I think someone who is awkward is a geek, logically speaking in my own mind's terms. It has nothing to do with their interests, unless they have their interests plastered all over them o_O in which case that would look rather awkward, but it has to do with how they carry themselves.

Stereotypically speaking, you have the football player walking across the lunchroom and the kid who has really really big books and sits by themself etc. walking across the lunchroom. What's so different between these two stereotypes? What truly sticks out the most is how they carry themselves. The football player will have good posture and a relaxed, steady walk, with his eyes looking around at others and acknowledging them. The big-book-kid will be kind of hunched over, as if he doesn't want to be seen, and a quickened pace in his walk so he can get to his table quicker. His head will be bent toward the floor, looking at no one and nothing except his destination. This latter example, to me, looks awkward. But you know what? I've seen some kids with letterman jackets and all that junk who have an awkwardness to them. I've seen some kids with big books walk confidently and smile at others. It really just boils down to the amount of confidence someone has, because it'll show.

Geeks are the lawyers, the doctors, the politicians, the people who run their own businesses, the actors who can actually act, the singers with good lyrics that they write themselves, the kids who sell you half of their school lunch, that guy at the boardwalk who sketched out a picture of you with a big head driving a go-cart, that one guy at that one McDonalds who you didn't have to repeat your order to because they actually got it right the first time...

Everyone is a geek to someone. It all depends on the guy/gal standing next to you and what they think. I've seen people who are more geeky than me and I've met people who think I'm a geek. It's all relative.

When I hear the word "geek," I automatically think of clumsy adolescents going through puberty, with their voices cracking and changing. I picture thick, black-rimmed glasses and mouth retainers. Suspenders, pocket protectors and a really bad sense of fashion style also come to mind. Should geeks have a scary obsession with comic books and Dungeons & Dragons? Most definitely. It's only natural that these traits classify a geek because the geek stereotype is so vividly painted out for us in the media and in school.

Personally, I would consider someone to be a geek if they pretend to be something they are not in order to fit into a crowd. Usually their actions are so obviously artificial and silly that I can't help but to laugh. Especially when the facade involves slang, lol.

SuperMuffin's post pretty much explains how children may sometimes call others geeks just because they're different or don't fit into a particular group. It's just immaturity at that level. Hmph, I guess that I would consider older people who put down others constantly, geeks themselves. I mean, they're making others feel bad in an effort to mask their own insecurity. You know?

Anyway, yeah, "geek" can also be a playful term for when someone says something silly. It's pretty broad nowadays.

To each his own I guess. :shrugs:

A geek is a person in the circus who bites the heads off chickens. I doubt anybody would want to be that o_O

Edit: but here are now other meanings to the word, just that it was th original

I don't really hear geek that much; usually when someone is just joking around with someone or something. Otherwise, I imagine someone similar to what CWB said - thick glasses, pocket protectors, kinda high piched voice (this is taking about a guy, by the way o_O), bad sense of fassion, and sits by themselves in a corner reading books. There's nothing wrong with these kids, and shouldn't be picked on, but that's what I take from the stereotypical "geek." o.o'

I define geek and nerd diffrently. To me, a nerd is a teacher's pet/suck up, school obsessed A+++ student who acts snobby to people unpopular or with low grades. ( I know many of those)

A geek (what I call myself) is someone who is into "immature" things like videogames, comics,DnD,computers, fantasy (books) whatever is considered "uncool".Even anime and manga seem to fit in there. Well, those are what boring people consider "immature" and geeky.

Oh he still is. I am now known as the Prince of nerds. I think... I'm his lil' brother.

What I think a "nerd"/"geek" is someone that hates anything that the "cool kids" like.

For instance, I am a geek/nerd. I get made fun of, yadda yadda. But, I like stuff that other people think is stupid, and for little kids.

But that is just my opinion.

Wow! I didnt think I would get as many responses as I did! And really great ones too! Thanx for your input! You guys mentioned things I had never thought of! I'm really glad you guys feel pretty much the same way as I do. And I agree: "geek" is a term used differently by everyone! Thanx again! xox

I've got this all worked out... In my drama crew, I'm a 'dork,' our resident computer genius is the 'nerd,' the artist-writer-jpop guy [okay, so that description fits most of my friends...] is a 'geek,' my friend Heather is a '*****,' her younger brother is a 'twerp,' and the list goes on. [My kid sister is a 'cool newbie,' a title she holds with pride from the brief period she was a member at OB, heh.

Stereotypes are hilarious when no one cares. ;)
