Well here's the basic story, I'm thinking of the next PS2 game to buy. And the cover of marvel vs Capcom 2 caught my eye. I was just asking around but no one I know has played it.
So here's the situation, can any of you tell me the basics of it, what they think of it (Good or bad, oh yes, please be quite detailed why) and just tell me what its mainly like and the type of story it has (if it has one).

They say it has a story, but I don't see it mentioned in the manual or anything. Check Gamefaqs for the complete story. Something about a timetravel and dimension hopping.

Nearly identical to the Dreamcast version, the control scheme is simplified a little, meaning you have your Low/Fierce punches and kicks, no mediums, and 2 assist buttons to call out your two other partners for one move.

It's very fast-paced, like the arcade, and plays a lot like Marvel Vs. Capcom 1. The only thing that's bad might be the sound. For some reason, the F/X don't seem as good quality as a normal PS2 game. But don't let that stop you from enjoying a great 2D fighter with 3 on 3 tag.

I did find one thing interesting when I put the disc in my computer to see what was inside...there were modem/network drivers for online play, but they were never activated in the final code...strange.

The Japanese versions of most Capcom fighters since the DC days all let you play online via Capcom's Matching Service. It was always taken out when the game was brought over here.

I only have the DC version, but there really is no story (a basic one, but that's it). If you go to GameFAQs people have somehow come up with all these lengthy histories for the Street Fighter games, when the material and the game itself say little about it. I'm not sure where they get it all from, but I'm sure it's the same case with this one.

There's probably some loose story like in the past street fighters, maybe Abyss (the last boss weirdo) just...went on a rampage and all the good and bad guys got caught up in it or something. Anywhoo the action is faster than marvel vs. capcom 1, but the characters arent' as detailed. It probably has the most characters in any fighting game too (56). When picking a character you can also select what type of move they'll do when you call them out or during a team super (like anti-air, projectile, etc.), so there are a lot of different combinations you can use. My only complaint is that 1: cable is waaaaay too freaking cheap, and 2: they took out some cool super moves like morrigan's lv3 eternal slumber, or chun-li's air super move (long japanese name), but otherwise it's a great fighter.

Storylines aren't important in games like Marvel vs. Capcom 2. It's an arcade port. Typically, arcade games are all flash and have less substance than games designed specifically for consoles. So, there aren't endings or anything. The only reason you should bother with arcade mode is to gain credits for purchasing more characters, costumes and stages.

The game is a nice compilation of the versus series. It features every Marvel and Capcom character that ever knocked heads with one another and then some.

If you like frantic, flashy 2-D fighters, then pick this one up. Things really become insane with triple team maneuvers and sprites flying all over the place. The 3-D backgrounds look okay for the most part, but they're sterile and have little to do with the characters.

I've always preferred games like Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter 3 though. The next Guilty Gear will also be out soon, and I know, who's going to be getting that, lol.

:D :D :D Coming soon!

Anyway, MvC2 is an excellent game. It probably got the most play from me out of any of my DC fighters... Mostly because it is much easier to just jump into, which results in a lot of pretty good fights with friends (even if they are just average players).

I've not played the PS2 version, but I hear it's a faithful conversion. Not too different from the DC version, although I hear there are some sound issues. I've not played it yet, so I can't say for sure.

 • 3 weeks later...
I got Marvel VS. Capcom 2 for Christmas and I have not had any problems yet. It it a good port, but it is a straight port no extras or anything of that sort. I can't seem to find Akuma though, he never shows up when I have enough points to buy him.

But if you want a 2d fighter this is the game you should go for. No matter what. :D

I haven't played the game besides the arcade.

I was interested in a 2d fighter for the same reasons as you... next ps2 game to buy.

Sure enough, everyone said this was the game. I had personally been looking at snk v capcom2 because of its variety of charactors and control schemes, but everyone thought that the overall quality of that game was not as good as marvel v capcom.

I would say that is a good sign for marvel v capcom2.

Overall I still like the idea of snk but I think that you should just try to play both and see what you think.

I can tell you now though, everyone on the boards is gonna give marvel v cap, a better review than snk v cap.

So just give them both a try... good luck with the choice.

Summoning Tyrant will be next to impossible if your plaiyng against good opponents... Sorry to burst your bubble but Jill really isn't that good...

Anyways, I play this alot at the arcade.. I have it for DC as well. A great, fast paced fighter. I would recommend this to anyone who likes fighting games..
