Sniglefager
This is not fans rumours on the next Mario game. This is actually gonna be what the next "real" Mario game is gonna be called(for right now). I don't expect many replies to this post, because there hasn't been much info released on this game. All the info I have down is all I know about this game. It was origiannaly gonna be called 100 Marios. You may have heard of this game a couple years ago at E3. It was the game where 100 Marios were all moving across the screen at once. This caused tons of rumors, but they eventually stopped, because people thought it was the same game as Super Mario Sunshine. They were wrong. Shigeru Miyamoto said "It will have what Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine were missing." I have no clue about this, because both those games were great, but who knows, maybe he's just been keeping it a secret for a new Mario game. Also, since this game has been in development for a while, the game is "supposed" to come out in late 2004. Of course, Nintendo's famous for its release date delays (like Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. It was supposed to come out November 2002), but maybe Nintendo can deliver it for 2004 holiday season. This is pretty much all I know about this game (there is more, but right now it's just rumors). Of course, there will be new Mario games in 2003 to tide us over for a while, but surely not till 2004. I don't know about you, but I can't wait for this sucker to be released
SS5 Gogeta
I heard the same rumour too. My guess is that what the previous Mario games were missing are depth in the character of the villain or even the people that Mario is trying to save. In someway, Shiggy might add those things if I'm right.
Semjaza
I think most people at first just assumed the game turned into Pikmin honestly. It was basically just forgotten about, until Miyamoto mentioned it still being in development (along with a few other forgotten games) a few weeks back. I'm not sure what it will be. Whether or not it really has anything to do with the demo, I have no idea. They could have just taken the name and applied it to a normal Mario sequel for all I know. Hopefully we'll see something at E3 about it.
Sniglefager
I was reading through my new EGM, and I saw that Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that Super Mario 128 is in development, as well as Mario Kart for GCN. Not much news, but hey, it's something.
Guest Musahi
Well according to the latest Gamepro, it isn't even a game. It was just a display of the Gamecube's power. 128 models of Mario on the screen at once. 128 bits on the ps2, Mario 128. See a connection? Semjaza
The latest Gamepro is wrong. That's originally what the demo was, it was to show off the power of the GC and how much it could do at once. GC isn't even technically a 128 bit system as it is. Anyway, Miyamoto confirmed that it was still in development as a game a few weeks ago, along with a few other titles. He's also brought the ideas it used up in interviews in the past. Gamepro is just assuming I guess.
BigCajones
Can anyone actually classify that this game is going to be released? The last I've heard about this game is before the Gamecube was released and it was saying it would come along later and would be the first Mario game to be released on the GC. Now I realise time has gone by and still no news, updates, screen shots or nothing. Plus the fact that Mario Sunshine has been released now, so it's not even the first Mario game on the GC. So it would be nice to know if anyone could show me some factual information, maybe a quote or something from someone from Nintendo i.e. Miyamoto. I hope it does get released, but I can't tell whether it's going to be good or not with just a pic of a 128 Marios. Maybe Miyamoto has decided to keep his mouth shut on the game and keep it confidential to websites and magazines, but I don't see the logic in that, so if anyone can help in this matter please do! :)
James
There isn't much factual information to be provided. Mario 128 is not the title of the next Mario game. Nintendo has never said as such. Miyamoto has said, however, that Nintendo is already working on the next Mario title. And that's great news, considering that Mario 64 was the only Mario title on N64. It'd be nice to see two or three Mario games on GameCube. The Mario 128 demo itself is not an actual game; it's a tech demo. So there seems to be some confusion about that. In terms of whether or not Nintendo actually makes a "100 Marios" game, well, that's a slightly seperate issue. I believe that Nintendo has indicated that both games will be produced. Still, I'd like to see a new Mario game take place in the more traditional Mario locales...Super Mario Sunshine was great, but the fact that it all took place on tropical islands kind of lowered the variety in the environments. It'd be nice to see some snow/fire/night time levels and such again.
BigCajones
I also would like to see some of the old mario levels to bring back that special spark into the game. In my official Nintendo magazine around one-two years old now definetely said it was going to be created Mario 128, obviously its source wasn't brilliant or Ninty have changed there minds (clueless). They ought to make more mario game than they did for the N64 though and Mario Kart should be excellent and fun if made online! :excited: Hopefully there will be some official updates on the 'next' Mario game soon.
James
Well, Nintendo were in development of a second Mario game for the Nintendo 64. From what I remember, they were planning to utilize the 64DD (ala Ura Zelda, which was never released until now). However, since Nintendo killed the 64DD, most of those games never saw release. And as a result, many of the game concepts were bumped up to GameCube (including Flippin' Kirby for GCN, which now has a name like Rollerball or something...I forget).
Semjaza
Miyamoto Reconfirms 128 Marios An unexpected source, Japan's Playboy magazine, reveals (amoung other things) a Miyamoto interview. Shiggy confirmed that "'Pikmin 2' and the 'Mario 128' game that was shown at the [GameCube] unveiling are both in development." Elaborating on Mario 128 (revealed as 128 Marios at Spaceworld 2000), Miyamoto states, "I believe that with this game you'll be able to feel the "newness" that was missing from Mario Sunshine." We'll have a preview of this game during Mario Guide's 12 Days of Christmas, which starts Saturday, and continues until Christmas Day. Posted on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 by Net-tech
This is what I was referring to before. Miyamoto apparently specifically called it that, but it could be lost in translation. I assume this had to go from Japanese to French to English, so who knows heh. So really, this confirms another Mario game, which I guess is being called Mario 128 in some form (whether by Miyamoto or whoever did the interview). It doesn't seem clear to me whether or not he is referring to a whole new Mario game (aka 64 to 128), or something to do with the old tech demo (which spawned the 100 Marios idea). The interview seems very insistant that he is speaking of the game based on the tech demo though. Who knows. E3 should show something I hope.
