Gran Turismo 3

The racing game to end all racing games.
(well atleast until GT4 comes out)

So heres the deal, I have finally gotten my hands on a copy of gt3. (yea, I know it took a while)

Being the gran turismo nut I am, I had to start up a little discussion about the game.

I wanted to hear about how you guys play the game. (as in what cars and general set ups)

Or how you progressed through the levels.

What kinds of medals you have on the licenses, how many races and win you have. That sort of thing.

Ive had my copy for about 2 days now.

I started with a miata, worked to a mitsu lancer evo 6, then and currently a c5 vette. This made for an easy transition between advancing difficulties during the beginer circut.

Ill be back to talk more...

It's been a while since we've talked about this, but it's still a really good game. You're pretty fast.

I progressed moderately through the game so I'm at 88 percent complete right now, in the middle of completing one of the professional cups. I ran through the licenses so I got a whole lot of bronze awards.

I stick to mostly the Japanese and German cars but I wish they had more of a variety, even though it would take longer to get the legal paperwork done before the game comes out.

I hope they bring back a lot of the older cars in GT4 and a Used Car option. Now that they have the main racing engine done, the developer'll have a lot more to add in, like online play perhaps.

A Miata?! Man, you might as well put up a sign that says 'overlap me'. Believe it not, the you're better off with a Treno or a PT Crusier. Most go with the Treno because its cheaper and you can buy a Racing Chip for it right away. Use this thoughout most of the beginning of the game and use any racing upgrades you can get. The Lancer is a good car. Upgrade this baby enough and you'll be using all the way until you get a S-class car.

As for racing tips here's what I do: In the area where it shows the number of your current gear setting, there's always a little red number that pops up next to it. What the basically means is that there's an upcoming turn than can only be taken at that gear setting. So basically, if the number says 3 and you're current gear setting is 6, you have to brake to down shift the car to that gear. Its easier to do this with automatic transmission as the car will down shift on its own while you brake. In manual you have to do both and have to be very familar with the car you're using. The also most of time lets you know ahead of time to be ready to brake and downshift. Most of the time when that red number comes up, it stays steady meaning to start getting ready. When it starts flashing, thats the cue to let go of the gas and hit the brakes. For beginners, I say to make sure that when you brake make the current gear 1 number less then what the red number says. So if it says 3, brake til it just as it hits gear 2.(Man I hope I'm making sense). However though, often the computer doesn't warn you to slow down so you pretty much have to be ready at all times to hit the brakes.

Never hold the gas and the brakes together and always use the apexs to take turns. Lastly once you get an S-class car, put some turbo kits in it and change the oil every now and then. You'll be using that sucker throughout the rest of the game.

Oh and Rico, your wish came true. Its been confirmed that GT4 will be online but its also going to be the last in the GT series. This may sound like a bad thing but with the online feature, there really isn't no need to make a GT5 since its very likely you'll be able to download maps and new cars. But its still up in the air, so we just have to wait and see.

First matter of my reply is directed to zero about the "miata thing."

I personally find the miata suited well for the game. Using 1 miata you can race and win the first couple of clubman type races with ease. Following that, you can access the roadster cup, the na or turbo cups, as well as the FR races and any gt cup you can keep up with.
I will say, the miata is a crap car, I personally do not like it. But, it has potential to be a useful sports car in the early game.

Another amazing racer to me is the corvette, thats right, the corvette.

It suprised me how well the new Z06 corvette was represented in the game. I have one now fully modified with no racing decals. It has served me well and although I will find a better car, this is a great car to pick up with the first chance to spend 50,000.

Eventually, with enough racing and proper knowledge of the game, money becomes no concern. But early in the game you have to work your way up, so finding the quality car pick on the first try is important.

I also have to mention the pressure sensitivity. This feature was a major factor for me in previous games. In GT2 the lack of a mid rpm throttle was horrible. This time around its awesome, and with the uses taught by liciensing, pressure sensitive gasing&braking can make you a faster racer.

I still have hang ups with the lay out for the user to navigate from things like the save screen, to the race screen. This causes dealing with loading, saving and car experimentation harder and slower.

The only other gripe I have is the replay being such a center piece of the game.

I believe the replay should be in the game, but it gets old having to click through a bunch of different options and screens just to finish the race you just won.

Overall I still hold this game as the king of racing games.
9/10 score because nothing is perfect (except the finest of women)

Alright, now its on!

Ive gotten through the crapy starting stuff and have gotten knee deep in the game.

Ive got all the licenses including the super.

I have a car that is workable on the mid level circuts and a couple of others that will do just fine for now.

I also wanna mention that getting the super opens that final race to you, which is a formula race of sorts. Most of the cars in it looked like indy or cart, but I wouldnt be suprised if there are formula 1 cars in it.

I also wanna mention a tip I found to help on the last test of the super license: toy. GT one 99, corte d azur is the course. During this race, I payed less attention to the gear indincator than most. Instead of taking your eyes to the next turn indincator, just get ready and watch, use the feel of the car and past experience with the many failed attempts you are bound to have taken.

Oddly, I didnt have trouble with any of the other test. It must have been a good day for race testing. I managed to beat the final 6 test of the super license in about an hour or less.

Hopfully Im not wasting my time on this thread, for some reason I thought there were a bunch of gran turismo nuts here. Oh well, its cool.

 • 2 weeks later...
Ive just found out some dissapointing stuff about this game...

It turns out that there was originally a lamborgini diablo gt race car in the game but due to ... you guessed it, legal reasons, the american version didnt end up having this car.

This is becoming a real aggrevation to me because through out the past with the other games there had been other cars that went through the same ordeal.

I guess I should also mention the progress Ive made in my game.

I am now over half way through with about 53 percent complete. Im kicking the games *** to put it bluntly.

Oh yea, asuka, your dad has good taste in games.
