Well, they could take down the servers that have all the character information and stuff, lol. It wouldn't be hard for them to stop people from playing.

I've also heard the rumor that Square isn't going to have FFXI up and running for very long, but I haven't heard anything to back it up. Personally, I don't think it's true, since they'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they shut the whole thing down so soon after it launched. I mean, after all they've put into it and all the money they've spent, they'd just be throwing it down the drain.

Could someone please explain to me FFXI? if the other 10 have been a release for gaming consoles, the why isnt XI? wouldn't it be a better idea to have a game you could keep forever and play whenever? It seems like a bit more sense to me.

ok, I went searching all over the place, including magazines and web sites, and this is what I've found out:
FFXI was having problems in Japan from cheaters and hackers, so that could be one reason they might not keep it up too long.
FFXI is Square's first MMORPG, but it supposedly is an "experiment." Supposedly, this is basically just a test for another online game they're making, but it won't be Final Fantasy.
And S@bretooth, FFXI is gonna be on home consoles. It's just gonna be online only. It's also gonna be on computer's too

Well there's no point to that. Now they just say that FFXI is coming to Western europe and now rumors of only a year of play, what the hell was the point of even making the game. Squaresoft and Enix are planning to make some changes. Well I dont see what, but if FFXI is becoming to fail then Square's budget will hit the bottom of the pit seeing as it's rolling down hill anyway. lets face it, Square's desperate now.

Well the rumor is because of one thing. I think I posted it before. One of the higher ups at Square basically said that they aren't planning on having the game continue past 2004.

Now, I guess this could mean a few things... Could mean they'd completely take down the servers, could mean they'd just not update things anymore... Who knows. As long as enough people are paying, it's in their best interest to keep it going.

I severely doubt the guy's comment was even considering countries outside of Japan though. It could have just been a shortsided thing he said, especially considering that I don't think the game even broke even money wise when he said it. It's actually pulling in money for them now, so he might have a different opinion.

Well.. if Square managed to fix all of the glitches and bugs that arose when the Beta was first tested in Japan, then hopefully it won't be taken down after a year. But after all the time and planning they've put into FFXI, I highly doubt that Square would turn back now.

Axel the Ignition told me that he read it on a japanese site. He said that it said it was only going to be available for playing for a year. Most ffxi japanese sites do have some english on them. I still might buy it even if you can only play for a year. It's only 50 bucks plus a monthly fee if they have one.

Well no doubt there'll be a monthly fee. I mean, how are Square going to make a continuous capital if their attempt at a film failed, and if the problems of BETA servers with FFXI still occur even though its still official. To even a point though, how would they get rid of the glitches world wide? Europe has a pathetic Squaresoft, to be honest, I've lost hope in FFXI in Eurpe, but only time will tell. While Square made a test to Europe to see if they were RPG compatible... Japan's gaming has lost interest in Europe.
