Using her hands and slippers, Liliana Valera, 22, of Kensington hit her son so hard that his bowels ruptured, authorities said. She was charged yesterday with murder, manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child in the case of little Carlos Rufino. An autopsy completed yesterday found evidence of a vicious beating involving broken ribs, contusions and internal injuries, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office. She said there were lacerations of the small intestine, and the bowels had ruptured. Festivities disrupted Law enforcement sources said Valera erupted shortly before midnight on Christmas Eve, when Carlos vomited at dinner. As the boy's father and some guests remained at the table, Valera dragged the boy into another room and beat him, the sources said. Carlos remained ill throughout Christmas Day and into Friday afternoon, when his parents found his lifeless body in the living room of their E. Fourth St. apartment, authorities said. They called 911 and Carlos was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was declared dead on arrival. No charges had been brought against the boy's father, whose name was not released. Child welfare officials, who took custody of Carlos' 1-year-old sister yesterday, said they had no prior contact with the family. Neighbors described Carlos' parents as quiet and hardworking. They said there appeared to be nothing amiss with the boy, who authorities said had been treated for tuberculosis at some point. 'This is very sad' "I'm telling you, he seemed like a healthy kid," said the family's landlord, who did not want his name used. "This bothers me so much. They seemed like caring parents, and I never heard any screaming or fighting. This is very sad." Christmas stockings and red ribbons filled the windows of their second-floor apartment. The green, red and white colors of the Mexican flag, also in their window, echoed the holiday spirit. Hyo Lee, manager of Young's Fruit and Vegetables, said Carlos appeared well when he visited the shop with his mother last weekend. "He was fine, just like a regular kid," said Lee, 40. He said Valera, who speaks little English, "was very smart and was one of my best customers." On Friday afternoon, he saw the little boy being rushed into an ambulance. Beating such a small being, and your own child at that, because he vomited? That mother should go to jail and live in torment for the rest of her life, because her actions were horrible. Anyone who could do such a thing and ignore their child's illness until he died [i]should[/i] be put in jail for an extremely long time, personally, I think she should be put in for the rest of her life. Guest Hikaru Ichijyo Posted January 15, 2003 Share Posted January 15, 2003 I read that quite some time ago, it disgust me to think that a parent can be so cruel as to dish out that much emotional and physical pain toward a child. If you don't truly love a child there are much greater things you can do for it like giving it up for adoption. My sister is -_- exactly this way with my niece, it's sad the way some children get treated. Society has really sunk to it's lowest unevolved form. Let me jsut say that my sister was in school. She had her backpack. It was full of those useless school newsletters that no one really uses other then for bird cage liner. Anyways... My mother found them in her bag... Went out cut a huge branch off a tree got a nice part of it... peeled the bark off of it and soaked it in water. Then beat my sister with it for every paper. And when my sister moved or complained... Mother started over again. Or my mother would break plates over her head. My mother wasent to nice to my older sisters. But never got caught for it. thats jsut one of the many resons why i hate her and why i live with my dad. I HATE people like that... they dont deserve to have kids i swear... If i ever had kids i would never do such a thing... But i never see myself haveing kids in the future... Seeign how the docter said for a girl like me... giveing birth is impossible. But if i adpoted i would never tream my kids like that. (Not to mention if i could have children.. i would have to find a guy first... oen i loved... which i have figured is most impossible for me to do... mwahahaha) But.... that up there... is horrible... It's incomprehensible how someone could be so brutal. Unfortunately this kind of thing probably happens everyday and everywhere. It's very upsetting and makes you very angry at how cruel these kind of people are, even if they seem wonderful on the surface. Sadly some of do get away with it, either by claiming temporary insanity, post natal syndrome or it never gets recognised. That's just wrong The woman should be jailed for life. IUn the article, it kept saying thsat he looked like a normal kid, etc., but that doesn't matter. I am a normal kid, but I was abused. For all we know, the kid could have been beaten countless times. Was she embarrassed in front of everyone else? Did he throw up on the food? I don't understand why she would get mad over this. Poor kid.
