Nats
Has any1 noticed that a couple of saiyan (pardon spelling it's rong) names sound like vegetables? Like Kakkorte sounds like carrot Vegeta:vegetable Raditz:radish I think it's 4 :laugh:s What do u think?
TheShinje
Akira Torymama uses puns right throughout Dragonlball Z/GT, so he intends for them to sound like vegetables, like nameks sound like musical instruments (piccolo, Piano, Drum). It is just a bit of name fun from mr Toryama.
-D-
yea...interesting huh? i think the creators knew about this too. maybe you should go to the dragon ball Z/GT section if the otaku and look at the name fun section, maybe that'll help a bit.D
SSJ_WILLIE
Actually, I've heard that the names are how you say the vegetables in Japanese or something like that. Like Raditz is how you say Radish. I don't know if that is true but I'm not sure.
Amorphous
Just like ginyu means milk. Lol, yeah I'm pretty sure some of the names are in japanese for english words.
Rhys Mayiessen
Hmmmm...I never really thought about it before but now that you mention it they do. But then again I haven't been watching Dragonball Z much. Never know when its on.
Jinzouningen17
Yeah, theres a few other things strange to... Gohan means "Food" or somethin to that effect. And Brolly sounds a bit like Broccoli(A Very Aggressive Vegetable. ^_^) Plus, lets not forget about the ties between Frieza(Freezer), Koola(Cooler) and King Cold(obvious). ^_^
Kent
Kakarot- carrot vegeta- vegetable radditz- raddish Those are just off the top of my head. But I do believe that gohan means rice, and there are about a dozen other names that mean things. I just wanna mention that if any of you are really interested in this subject, there are about a million sites with this stuff. So do an internet search for dbz sites with name pun sections. bra
Yes I see it too. Gohan does mean rice and there is also vedel, she's named after a vedellia onion and then there are the obvios ones in there too. Like Vegeta, and Kakarott. Bulma means girl's underwear and Trunks... Duh! They all have name puns if you get down to it and think about it.
TheShinje
Gohan means "fried rice", if you do a google image search for the word "Gohan" sometimes, you will see images of bowls of rice ^_^
Sniglefager
yeah, but Vegeta's hair looks like a veggie. I mean, look at it. Also, doesn't Pan mean bread?
Transtic Nerve
yes, Pan means bread.... in many languages.... including Japanese. Gohan can also mean "meal" or "lunch" or whatever the like. WHich is why the announcer during the Cell Saga thought Gohan was a delivery boy... and also how Gohan got his name. (Chichi and her father wanted to go get lunch and they said gohan and Gohan stopped crying and laughed) Every name in DBZ is a pun to some extent I do believe. Not just the Saiya-jin. Transtic Nerve
I'm talking about the Japanese one. The English one butchered it up because the joke wouldn't make sense in English. What happened was: ChiChi and her father were trying to stop Gohan from crying and trying to pick a name. Gokou was there too I think. Anyway, everytime Gokou would say a name Gohan would cry. So finally ChiChi's dad said something like "Maybe he's hungry, lets get him some lunch (obviously in Japanese he said "lets get him some gohan" not in that way, but making it easier to understand in this case) and Gohan stopped crying. And then Gokou, in his genious, mentioned the word gohan and I think brung up his grandfather and said something like "he likes Gohan, like my grandfather, he likes the name gohan!" but all in all, it was because ChiChi's father had said something about lunch, not about Gokou's grandpa that made Gohan stop crying and ultimately give him his name. Juu
Alot of the puns were cut off in the Korean dubs though... Chi Chi: They just changed it to 'mom'... Goku: Son-o-gong (after 'monkey' in the Chinese folktale) Gohan: Son-o-ban (...something having to do with monkey...) Oolong: oo-wong I think Chi Chi was a little too obvious... ^_^;;;
EMU
ummmmmm... I think nappa is a type of cabbage in japan. If you want a complete english list, the best source for it (in oz, that I know of, lol:))is a magazine caled k-zone. they had all of the names for them at one time, my older sister was babbling on about it once so its natural I dont remember too much of what she said. lol ;)
REVENGE2
Actually, Vegeta's name by itself isn't the pun. It's that Bulma sometimes calls him Vegi. As in 'eat up all youe vegies!". And Ginyu isn't milk - it's ginuu. Toriyama edited it a bit so that everyone didn't always crack up laughing whilst watching The Ginyu force. Well...no more then they already did. And no one correct me. This comes straight from Yamaguchi Takatoshi, a freind of my brother's. *** Here's a few from the top of my head. Their names and meanings. Not all of them are jokes, by the way. -Goku - Son Goku. From Buddhist myth, a mokey demon. Son Goku had to protect a T'ang monk durring her travels -Shenron - "Dragon King" in one form or another. I want to say in Chinese, but the word for dragon in Chinese is "Long", so I don't know from where this is from. Unless there's multible words for dragon in Chinese -Gohan - A way to prepare rice -Goten - yet another way to prepare rice. -Pan - what do you cook rice in? -Chi Chi - I actually heard it was Japanese slang for "big boobs" -Bibi-di, Baba-di, and Majin Buu - The magical words that the fairy godmother said in Disney's version of Cinderalla are "Bibidi babadi boo!" -Freiza - Freezer -Coolah - Cooler. I suppose they mean "The old form of a freezer", but I like to think they mean "Cooler then Freiza". -King Cold - Obvious. Unless King Cold was merry (happy) and old, in which case, it comes from Old King Coal (Who was a merry old soul) -Vageta - His nickname, 'Vegi', is the same as the nickname for vegitables -Raditzu - the closest the Japanese can come to saying "Raddish" -Nappa - A kind of food -Piccolo - A musical instrument. Could also be "pickle", a green vegitable -Oolong - I actually don't know. Does anyone here? -Trunks - As in "swimming" -Dr. Breifs - as in Men's underwear -Garlic, Jr. - The most obvious in the series for English-speaking peoples. However because of the extreme embarrasement I get whenever I think about a powerful bad guy being named "Garlic", whenever I reffer to him, I'll call him "Garalik" -Cell - obvious -Baby - obvious -Pilof - I'm willing to bet it means 'short' in some language -Bulma - women's underwear. I don't know about the anime, but early on in the manga, that...area...of Bulma comes up often

Ginyu is the English was of saying Ginuu, it's essentially pronounced the same, with the exception of the Ya sound. They are supposed to be puns, not exact copies of the word, which is why Vegita is Vegita and Vegi. Vegita's name has the pun, the full name may not be a pun. Oolong I believe is a pun on some type of underwear. Since oolong has this facination with underwear. And yes, DragonBall the anime pretty much follows the Manga to par. So does DBZ for the most part, besides like the Garlic Jr Saga and the likes.

REVENGE2
TheOtaku lists Goku's name origin as simply "Ku means sky in Japanese" Good attempt, but I think it might be wrong. I think Goku's name may actually be from a Buddhist legend. I could be wrong, of course, considering I've pulled this legend from another anime called Love Hina Characters from the Legend: -Sanzou Genjou - T'ang Monk. Trying to procure the Buddhist scriptures -Son Goku - Stone Monkey. Flies around on a cloud and has a magical pole; was imprisoned on a mountain due to his violent ways, but was released in order for him to help Sanzou -Sakyamuni - Deity or spirit of some kind, is the one that released Son Goku from imprisonment -Gojou Sa - Water Demon and another servent of Sanzou -Hakkai Cho - Pig and another servent of Sanzou -Cheif's Daughter - the daughter of a cheif; Sanzou pledges to aid her against Gyomaoh, who wants her for a bride -The Great Lord Kinkaku - Powerful Demon lord; brother of Ginkaku -The Great Lord Ginkaku - Powerful Demon lord; brother of Kinkaku -Gyumaoh - Ludicrously powerful Demon lord; wants to eat Sanzou because her flesh will grant him eternal life -Kougaiji - demon servents of Gyumaoh -Gyokumen Koushu - Attendent of Gyumaoh -Rasetsunyo - Attendent of Gyumaoh
Kent
I think this could have easily gone in the saiyan names thread just below this. Its an interesting observation youve made, but I would try to get this moved into the other thread, that way people get to see it and respond to it rather than just see it in a closed thread. I say that becuase this will most likely be closed. I also should mention that "kun" is a common name used in the original versions of db for gokou. So there is a good chance that there are many different views on what gokous name means and what puns were intended with it.

So there is a good chance that there are many different views on what gokous name means and what puns were intended with it. -Um...who called him "Kun?" *** Becuase "Kun" is a title added on to the end of young boy's names, either out of respect or effection, like its female counterpart, "Chan". For example, Keitaro-kun. However, the first name can be shortened so that it's quicker to say. For example, Kei-kun. It's not unreasonable to assume that the entire name can be dropped. [is reminded of a song from Love Hina] Liddo-kun, Liddo-kun, Liddo-kun and freinds! With tails standing! Climbing on the cat's back! Merged it for you. SS5 Gogeta
About the name Goku AT based it off a myth with the immortal monkey named "Son oo kun" Son is his last name. "OO" means being enlightened. "Kun" means nothing or in some ways empty mind but also means air. The monkey got caught by Buddha and trapped under a mountain and Buddha renamed the monkey "Son oo Kun."The same words in chinese is written the same way as in japanese but pronounced differently. In japanese it's pronounced "Son Go Kou." So Gokou's name has a meaning to it. It doesn't simply just mean air. I'm not trying to correct anybody. I just want people to understand better about Goku's name and where it came from.
REVENGE2
Yeah...I said that. Leanred it from Love Hina manga #6, I think. Possibly no. 5. Too lazy to go check.
