akira toriyama( the brain behind dragon ball/z) is thought to be a genius to many people nowadays, and why? I'll tell you why...Dragon Ball. Must people know AT only for his work with db and dbz and nothing more, but anyways, do you think Toriyama will ever be able to create a series that will generate as much buzz as DBZ? will he ever gain recognition from another series? Or will AT forever be remembered only as the guy who thought up kaoikens and green guys named nameks?heh.D

psst.. next time, use the edit button, okies? ^_-

Anywho.. I personally liked Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump. ^_^
It was hilarious!! My dad introduced me to Dr. Slump years ago. In fact, I might go check it out again. ^^

I was pretty happy with Dragon Warrior too. I could tell it was his work because of the drawing style. I don't think he wrote all of it though... correct me if I'm wrong.

He has been popular with other series...

EVer heard of Chrono Trigger? Albeit, not a series, but a game. Still very popular. He did a few other games as well. And Dr. Slump was and still is rather popular. That was a manga and an anime I do believe. Just because people in America seem to only notice Dragonball, doesn't mean he's not popular for other things elsewhere. Alot of people don't even know about Dr. Slump or that he did Chrono Trigger... and I think he did DragonQuest or whatever those series of games were called. Knowledge equals recognition.

Well, as TN said, he very well may only be recognized for that in America. He is known for so much more in Japan, but even if he wasn't, he is a genious for thinking up and drawing 500+ episodes/movies. Think about it, Dragonball Z alone had something like 270 episodes, and still he goes on to make 13 movies. That's one hell of an imagination.

As for a new series, I really doubt it. Dragonball was very original, and Akira put all of his imagination into it. I'm sure if he was going to concentrate on another big series, he would most likely be taking elements from the Dragonball universe.

I think that AT will forever be in the light of db, but that is probably not a bad thing to him.

The way I see it, he had made other series before db and those got a lil bit of attention. So with those series alone he was an accomplished "creator."

But then after all of that, he creates db and instead of that being a standard for him to try and make it up to again, it becomes a life acheivment that puts him in a class all his own.

Maybe if he created db before the other stuff... Then it would create a "shadow" that he would live in. However, he created db after alot of other stuff, so instead of db being an early carrer succes sort of thing that he had to live up to, db became a crowing acheivment.

Well, I doubt that Toriyama will ever be able to come up with something that could match Dragonball Z's popularity. But that is kind of obvious, I mean, the show is one of (if not) the most popular anime series of all time.

This is similar to what Matt Groening is experiencing with the Simpsons. He could never repeat that. Futurama and Life in Hell are really obscure compared to the Simpsons.

But the truth is that Mr. Toriyama is very lucky to have made something so popular. And the more knowledgable anime fans will remember him for some of his other creations, rather than just King Kai and Vegeta.
