In my English class we're going over the book Catcher in the Rye, and boy are we having discussions. My teacher gives us a question to think about each day and we give out our answers to those questions and all of us of interesting point of views, so I thought I might ask the questions my teacher does to you guys and hear your answers and opinions.
Here's the first question he asked: Is there something from your society that you think are "phony"?

Well of course there are phony elements to our society. Just look at joe millionaire.

None the less, I think its best to remember that if you are genuine then there is nothing to worry about because the phonies will never be able to anticipate what your gonna do, hence, they will always be one step behind no matter what the subject.

Plus, the phonies have to spend all their time watching others to learn whats cool, while the rest of us are having fun. I mean, if you worried about doing whats cool, then you are never gonna be able to do something individual.

Sorry if Ive strayed off topic, but to conclude this on topic, I wanna say that there always has been and always will be phonies. The question is... can you pick them out, and if not, maybe you should ask yourself if your one of them.

Yes, I remember that book quite well. I read to the half of it then returned it. Too many curse words in it for my liking. Don't get my wrong, I know its a classic, but it didn't catch my attention.

I believe myself to be genuine.

I remember a saying...got it out of a Chris Heimerdinger book. I can't quite think whether it is relevant or not though.

'There are two forces in the world, one is black and one is white, only the people are grey.'

Yes, I believe that society encourages people to grow up too fast. That idea is helped along with television and everything else. It almost seems unconscious. When kids are grown up, parents say to them, "The years went so fast. You grew up to quickly. Don't be so cynical."

Anyway, just to quote something in relation to growing up, this is a poem entitled Growing Up. (No, I didn't write it.)

Time moves on,
ageing me more and more each day,
now I become cynical,
so by the time I'm old enough,
to know and do what's right,
I no longer care.

Kids now-a-days know way too much too early. I don't just mean book learning. Stuff like violence. I know a 5 year old who spends half his time going around killing people on a computer game. It sounds stupid, I know, but I remember when 5 year olds were still playing with trucks.

*glances at Liamc2's sig* Hmm... I didn't know that Evil Liam Incorporated has taken over the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Gah!! The barbarians are at the gates!! ;)

...er...back to topic. Ahhh...Catcher in the Rye...a classic. A must read for all alienated teenagers, and those who wish to know them. :D

My advise would be for everyone to read the book. You never know, you might actually learn something. ;)

If you're in the 13-14 range, its probably a bit over your head. You are likely to miss some nuances. Its a book best read at 17 or thereabouts. At an age when you think you might actually know something...

Interesting set of questions. I like them.

Phony: yes, I would have to say that the entire American country lives a Lie. A lie that money determines what you are, who you are, and who you need to be friends with. Image is everything in this damned culture.

Growing up to fast? partially. I have always been considered a slight bit more mature in my thought process that others around me, so i am in a sense" growing up to fast" However, I think that you can easily grow up, and live a well balanced life, and not forget to have the fun that you need. if you get a job at 16, then dont forget to ask for days off in order to give yourself something to do to have fun with. if your 30, then well, go out, play some games. Buy a PS2, get internet games, anything at all.

The point of life is to live for the moment, have fun, and most of all, never forget the good times, and always remember the bad.

Considering that I have limited time, I'm going to address only two of the topics brought up in this thread.

1)I believe society does not pressure kids to grow up too soon, kids naturally want to be older, from their own observations in life, not from MTV.

2)I could not believe in what Lady Macaiodh said more. Conformity. XP Many of my friends promote anarchy. I narrow that down to just promoting non-conformity. Anyways, conforming is not being true to self, which is very important, very important.
