Looks like the 'box has got some competition for being the only computer console....

I saw this earlier today.

So basically... A company formed in 2002, by nothing but marketers and e-commerce fallouts is going to get a console (which right now, is apparently nothing more than a crappy render) out in less than a year? Yeah right.

- Fastest console on the market
- Broadest selection of preloaded games
- Cross Platform capabilities
- State of the art design and architecture
- Advanced accessories and wireless capabilities
- Online connectivity for multi player gaming
- Seamless upgrades and patch management
- A multi tiered subscription service that meets the needs of casual, moderate and hard-core game players
- Demo games before purchasing or subscribing
- Games on demand
- Game Rentals

There are so many things on this that are simply beyond what is possible right now. Either that, or the only comparison is crap. There haven't been decent preloaded games since the Master System, I can't imagine what kind of crap will be built into this one.

Cross-platform capabilities... With what? If it's any console, they'd be sued to hell if they could even figure out how to do this. Otherwise, I really have no idea what this could mean. For all we know, they can just be saying it'll use PC devices through USB ports or something like that (which PS2 already does).

The way they word this... It doesn't even seem like you could go to the store and buy games. This is such a niche thing it's crazy. I don't know that I'd be willing to pay to download a game for a few hours (newer games are huge, especially FMV and sound heavy ones that are common now).

Stuff like the 3DO, Nuon, Indrema, Jaguar... They've all come and gone, and some of those were even from established companies. I cannot see any developer (other than the odd independant one) ever wanting to get in on this. Ideas like this have come before, and the important developers have all said no to it.

Anyway, we'll see if this even comes out... Supposedly the registrar of the site's domain is known for coming up with stuff that never happens.

Other than the whole downloading and always-on broadband idea... This really doesn't seem much like a PC or Xbox in my opinion. Xboxes and PCs share parts and simliar OS ideas and such. This doesn't even mention jack about it.

PS - Watch the flash movie when you get there. Don't ask me how that's considered state of the art design.

Oh my gawd! the thing speaks!

oh, it's a flash movie *ends wondering what the insidious garbling coming through headphones was* i had them off, and could only hear a muffled voice :p

er, pay-per-play? ergh, get off the grass! I can pay per play with my psone and a video shop
system requirements and packages.
going to have a fixable blue screen of death or someting?cough* microsoft *cough*
a system so intuative, young children can acess it independently, while parents rest in the knowledge that they are playing only age appropriate games
Can you imagine how many people now cannot play GTA :p
Heck, the thing looks like a kid drew it. And it has a really crappy name.

It's not as impressive as the corny voice on the flash movie says it is. They will need a frickin miracle to bring it out on time, but, we don't know how long they've been dream chasing.

and yeah, echoe all of Semjaza's point's, I don't have time to comment on them now :p

I am so running out to buy this thing. I mean, how totally, like, cool is it?

I mean, wouldn't it be like, an awesome match to my black Ps2, black TV and almost black VCR?

I mean, like, that controller and box, doesn't it look super? It looks exactly like what you'd get when you crossed a Ps2 with an X-Box.

Like, totally cool!

----

a-hem

That stupid little Flash object is drilling its way directly into my head ache.

The voice is extremely annoying, and it makes me want to hunt this company down and eat them. The Phantom has overstepped the fine line between 'Game Console' and 'Glorified Computer Plugged into TV'

The X-Box is nice and snug at the moment.

Did I mention I wanted to repeatedly bash the voice over guy over the head with this...this...'Phantom?'

It sounds like they're trying to make it 'cool' and 'exciting.' Except only they're failing miserably.

Did I mention how, very, very, much I want to see the voice over guy roasting in a spit?

Hellooo cheap knock-off. Splash a little green on the box and you have an X-Box. Just modify the controller, ever so slightly, and you have a Ps2 controller.

When this is 'released' I am so totally roasting marshmellows over it's corpse when it crashes and burns.

Wait...aren't I supposed to say nice things?

Hmm

Yes.

The site is pretty.

Haha that machine is funny. What a stupid company! How did you find out about this, because I'm pretty sure no gaming sites have a clue about this Phantom console. I would laugh if it did actually come out (by December hmmm).

My parents don't care what age rating game, because I don't get affected by games, does anyone? I've heard news of someone killing their best mate over a computer game (he probably just beat him at his best game or something lol), but there is a rare psycho case-
He tied him up with his vacuum and stabbed him like sixty something times
ARGH!

I like gaming technology as it is right now, but some of that stuff does sound amazing and cool, but I think we should wait a bit more in the future for some of that. Also lets leave that kind of console for a decent company, not some stupid labs. :)

That is quite funny but i think it sounds pretty good. It has lots of powerful accesories to offer like the first company to offer a 2.4ghz wireless controller. I think parents would be happy knowing that their children are playing games rated for their own age, but like you cajones my parents don't care what game i get as i don't get affected either, but some people have been very stupid and ended up killing people like you said ( they probably got that off games like Grand Theft Auto ) or something. There are quite alot of games that can be played on this and the whole new idea of pay per play sounds a bit strange but i don't know if i will get it as i like the technology at the moment as well.

Heh, this makes me laugh. I have neve reven heard of Infinium Labs, so I doubt they have enough backing to release a successful console. I actually like the look of the console itself, though they are kind of ripping off the PS2 and Xbox there! The logo looks very lame.
There are currently 32,679 retail game titles available and 418 shareware game titles and this does not include; adult, casino, sequels and new releases in past 6 months.
O.k...so how are they going to make money, if you aren't buying actual games? I think you have to pick a game from the start up screen, then pay to play on that for a certain amount of time.
And The Award For Crappest Console Idea EVER, goes to Infinium Labs

I have this feeling that the games on Phantom would just be like crappy internet games you can download and play as it says there are like 30,000 odd games available or something and i doubt all those games would have top graphics like they do on the consoles at the moment. This Infinium labs could probably be bought by microsoft anyways seeing that Microsoft is such a big company and is buying quite alot of other companies so i don't really think the Xbox does have competition to be honest.

Well that's kind of untrue it has plenty of competition. This whole 'war' between the X-Box, PS2 and the Gamecube is still commencing. It does have plenty of competition, but lets not be scared about it being threatened by Infinium Labs lol. I doubt this will ever be released, even if it was it will go way down the drain until BUST someone else owns this company. :)

Isn't that what they had in motels around 5 years back
Yes! That is were I recognised the idea from. I think that's exactly what they are aiming to do. I once went into a room, and there was a playstation controller coming from this wall socket, and I had to dial up, and follow instructions, so I could play it. It was actuaslly worth it though, because I had nothing to do, but that was a one off, and I couldn't see myself doing that everyday, when I wanna play my favourite game for a few minutes or whatever. It has the capabilities to make money, but it won't.

IGN's reviewer makes some interseting points on the system and corporation, of course, so does Semjaza Azazel

don't go the the "official" site, it has the slowest load times i've ever seen (find the press release on another site), besides being xtremely v-a-g-u-e

well, i'll guess we will see how many more ppl here like this system (yeah that was sarcasm), i wanna know how many games will be from another platform myself

ed: whatever happens they're definitly all over the web

Hmmm yes pay-per-play sucks bad! Maybe I don't understand what they mean by this, but if I do it's a stupid idea.

News just in more challenging competitors lol. Here is an article I read a month ago, which I just remembered:

Make Your Move Inc has applied for a patent on a brand-new console that has been in development internally for two years. Don't get too excited though: having been involved in the manufacture of both board games and computer software, Make Your Move Inc says that the console is being "developed to bridge the gap between the more traditional board game and the current videogame market." A low spec machine for kids then lol.

Anyone else heard about this? :demon:

Yes it's quite interesting, but still a bit of a joke to be making a games console. I could imagine them making education/board games for consoles already created, but making a console full of these games would be awful in my point of view! I highly doubt Make Your Move Inc would be able to make vast range of games and if they did it would be to a low standard of quality. Same goes with this Phantom console in my opinion, so really a waste of time and money unless they are jus trying to state what exactly they are capable of. :smirk:

*Couldn't be bothered reading any of the posts past Liam(C2)s...*

Okay, hmm it's basically a computer tipped on its side and has no hard drive. (Yes I am that sad that I can name all the components they have on that crappy pict.)
Any way the cpu is most likely a pre P2 chip, a crappy 250w power supply, one stick of ram (no idea how much, I'd say 32 or 64?), and a dvd. Also has six pci slots, three of which are unusable. (No agp, so no good graphics.)

What their saying is not impossible, just not possible at this time.
Basically, all they are saying is what bill gates has been trying to do for the last 10years. Personally I hope pay-per-play DIES AS ****ING HARD AS IT CAN!
This is a crap system, I've thrown out better than this.

It won?t go far at all...

ARGH! No! I've just seen the Phantom in my latest magazine. It's quite funny that it is actually going to be released. They say there will be around 32,000 titles that you will be able to download. I don't know if they are on about games you play online or actual games made by proper companies, because I don't have a clue who would work for Infinium Labs ... lol.

Out by the end of this year ... hmmm! It's basically a stripped-down Windows PC with always-on broadband connection. Infinium Labs are being too shy about this console they should give out more TRUTHFUL information!

The thing has been said to cost between $600 and $700 in an interview with the company recently.
Holy Crap man, talk about shooting yourself in the foot! With a prcie like that, it's so likely to fail! What a load of bull! Why pay that, when you can buy a PS2, a GCN, and an X Box for that money! *joins Cajones in insane laughter*

I'm trying to think about this more carefully and really it's just a new version of a computer, so if it has all (or most) the capabilities of a computer then really I suppose it's okay money wise. It is based more on computer gaming though so that's why it will fail, because people won't see it as a computer ... I mean look at it. 32,000 downloadable games sounds alrite, but pay-per-play makes me kill it! Surely if you had to pay to download them you would need a credit card, which kids don't have and also there will probably be plenty of hackers and all sorts of problems. *Gets Headache*

If the console was free I would put some well needed thought into getting this system! :whoops:

just got the March ed of Game Informer which has an article (4 paragraphs)featuring the Phantom entitled "The Next Next-Gen Console?", here's the last paragraph, blame any typos on me :drunk: ...
"Sound too good to be true? It probably is. Infinium is likely to encounter problems from pubishers, developers, and the three major console developers (Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo) as it would be essentianlly be stealing Playstation 2 games, for example, in order to showcase them on the Phantom. Game Informer contacted Sony about this matter, but it would not comment on the console. As far as future third-part support, it doesn't look good. We contacted Electronic Arts, who told us. "We have a comprehensive set of criteria by which we evaluate whaat platforms we support. We have no plans to support Infinium." Phantom, indeed. Could this be a hoax?
