Zanarkand Abes
Why did the GBA lose the infrared capability, and why do my gameboy color games appear darker in color, than they did on GBC. But mostly, why can't I battle a GBC using my GBA and GBA cable. The cable has a switch for GBA and GBC?
James
1) The infrared capability was mostly a gimmick. It wasn't very workable. 2) The GBA screen is inherently darker, which is why many early GBA games (the first Castlevania title, for example) looked too dark. Game developers now tend to produce games with brighter color palettes in order to cope with the dark screen. 3) I'm not sure what you mean. There are two cables for GBA. One allows you to play with GBA and GameCube linked up. The other allows you to play with other GBAs. The GBA Link Cable will allow you to play multiplayer games between GBA units.
Desbreko
You can't connect a GBA and a GBC using a GBA link cable--the GBA cable just won't fit into the GBC's EXT. port. To link a GBA and GBC, use an old GBC link cable. Note that you cannot link any GB/GBC games to any GBA games, and you can only play GB/GBC games using a GBC link cable. Is it just me, or do I sound like I'm reading out of a manual? :twitch:
Sniglefager
yeah, you do sound like you're reading out of a manual, but that's a good thing. That does make me mad about that darker screen, though. Almost went blind playing Mario World
Desbreko
*Gets out GBC and GBA, and two copies of Pokémon Yellow. Turns both games on, and sets them side-by-side to compare.* Okay, the only difference that I see is that on the GBC, the blue on the title screen is now black on the GBA, but all the other color looks exactly the same to me, and not any darker. And the blue turning to black could just be a little color variation on the GBA, since you can change the color palette on old GB games. Even with older GBA games like Super Mario Advance and F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, they've always seemed just as bright as games on my GBC. I have yet to have a problem with the screen being to dark, or even any darker than the GBC. After having my GBA for a year and a half now, since it came out, and never having a problem, I'm beginning to think that my eyes must just be really good or something.
Sniglefager
no, I just don't get enough Vitamin A probably (i.e. carrots). Seriously, though, you didn't have to go to all this trouble.lol.
James
Desbreko, just about everyone in the gaming media complained about the GBA screen being darker than previous iterations of the machine. So, it depends on a couple of things. First, it depends on the game you play. F-Zero and Mario are both pretty bright games. But play the older Castlevania and compare it to the newer version...and you'll see a big difference. Most developers are now comfortable enough with the machine that they can use the correct color palette.
Semjaza
I remember back when Ubi Soft was making Rayman for GBA... They had to completely change the color palette because Nintendo changed the settings or something in the development kits. Games like Castlevania: Circle of the Moon were already too far along to be changed apparently and as such are incredibly dark. If you play a GBC game with dark colors, you can also see that the GBA wasn't really taking such palletes into consideration. Try playing Dragon Warrior 3 when it's night time in the game. You cannot see anything. Anyway, like James said... Developers are working on this, and I've not had problems with any newer GBA games being tough to see. The GBA SP should fix this problem even moreso. Future games (only FFTactics Advance so far) are incorporating different modes that will change the brightness of the game depending if you're playing on the GBA, GBA SP (resulting in less washed out graphics than normal GBA settings if you leave the light on) and Gameboy Player. As for the cords... 3rd parties sell multi pack cords with connections for both GBC and GBA. I'd watch out for one of those. The infrared was taken out since it was used in maybe 4 games, was extremely slow and only worked if the GBCs were like right against eachother. I'd have to say link cables are worth the 10 extra dollars.
James
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on GBA:SP... Excuse me... *goes into a drunken daze* :drunk: Ahh, okay. Better now. ^_^;; Anyway, yeah...the dark screen really isn't an issue these days. And it hasn't been for some time now. It was only the first batch of games that suffered from problems (and even then, it was only the very dark games like Circle of the Moon, as Semjaza pointed out)
Zanarkand Abes
The cable did fit into the EXT. Port, and I was fighting two Pokemon crystals.
Desbreko
Um, no, a GBA link cable will not fit into a GBC EXT. port. There's a little nub thing on the GBA cables that make it so they can't fit in a GBC EXT. port. It just ain't possible. The only way to link GBC games using a two GBAs or a GBA and a GBC is to use a GBC link cable, since a GBC link cable will fit in a GBA EXT. port, in addition to being able to fit GBA cables.
Samgee Gamwise
Sorry Dezzy, (oooooooo Ialways wanted to say that) but I'm siding with Zanarkand Abes on this one. I have pesonaly seen a third party link cable that said it could do both, through use of a switch. I do not know this is what Zanarkand Abes is refering to, but it might be. Desbreko
Well, sure, maybe with a funky third party link cable. I'm talking about first party link cables, though. (You know how I feel about third party accessories, Sammy, so I won't bother saying it here, heh).
