Yu Yu Hakusho!
Juu, Deedlit, and all you other LOTR guys....I need your help. In Language Arts, we have to read a classic story. There are about 30 different books on the list and the LOTR set is one there, including the Hobbit. I'm not sure which one I should read! I want to read all of the Fellowship, but I've only gotten to chapter 3 before my dad took it away from me so he could read it for himself.... And this is for a grade! Not only that, but I'm going to have to do this huge report after I finish it....*sigh* What should I do?
DeathKnight
In my opinon, if you have to read just ONE book, read The Hobbit. It, on its own, is as good as the whole Fellowship series. ^_^ Plus, if you havent read it, you'll learn some new things ^_~
Rhys Mayiessen
Oh yes I agree with DeathKnight you should read the Hobbit. If you only want to read one then that's the way to go. I read it in grade seven and didn't read the Lord of the Rings books until grade nine so even if you read the Hobbit it doesn't mean that you have to read The Lord of the Rings.
Semjaza
The Hobbit also reads a hell of a lot faster than Fellowship of the Ring. It's also not part of the main LotR trilogy, so you don't even have to worry about reading the three other books if you really don't want to. So yeah, The Hobbit. Yu Yu Hakusho!
I know it's shorter, but I've already read it and I HATED it.... Sorry to say, but it was SO boring....I'd never want to read that again. Plus my teacher said I can't read that one since I told her I had already read it a while back....^^; So which one out of the series would be the best, not including the Hobbit?
Semjaza
You could have said that before you know... I have no idea if you read the other books. If not, start from the beginning obviously. If you've read them all... I guess I'd read The Return of the King. Honestly, why not broaden your horizons and read something on that list that isn't by Tolkien. Yu Yu Hakusho!
Most of the books on the list I've already read. Anyway, I'm kind of in this little LOTR obsession...me and a bunch of my friends are trying to get all the books read. ><; I like Tolkien anyway...but if you think that reading something by another author is better, I'll name a few books and you tell me what you think is the best one...but you don't have to help...it just that you suggested reading something else and I'd like to know which book isn't as boring as hell....
Rhys Mayiessen
Oh I guess you wouldn't want to read the Similarillon(sp?). Its kind of hard to get into and it almost reads like the bible but it is a good book. I'm reading it right now and its not that long 300 and something pages not including the index.
Yu Yu Hakusho!
I've heard of it...and it's mainly based on the elves, right? I'll read that one if I can find it, even though it's not on the list of books that I can read....
Deedlit
Yeah, you should read The Hobbit. It's shorter, so you can finish it faster, it's a good way to introduce you to FotR when you get it back from you dad, plus it'll be easier to summarize. ^_- -EDIT- Yes, don't read The Silmarillion. It was like trying to read an encyclopedia or history book.... x_x Geez, and it's hard to remember the names....I had to take notes on the freakin' book just to remember who was who and what was what for crying out loud! *ahem* It only gets good around the last 100 pages.
Juu
I vote for The Two Towers. ^^ That was personally my favorite book, and was pretty much the easiest to live through. >>; The Hobbit was really, really boring for me, as well as the beginning of 'The Fellowship of the Ring'. I'm waiting for my order of 'Return of the King', but I already know what's going to be happening there. I never finished 'The Silmarillon', because it was just waay too confusing right off the bat. The Two Towers was my favorite out of the three Trilogies. ^_^
Mitch
The Hobbit.
Originally posted by Juuthena I never finished 'The Silmarillon', because it was just waay too confusing right off the bat. Semjaza
The Silmarillion is interesting because of all the backstory and history it provides. It was pieced together from J.R.R. Tolkien's notes by Christopher Tolkien (I think that's his son), and as such there are discontinuties in it... It probably reads more like a history book than was planned because of this. It's by no means bad, but I don't recommend reading it unless the other books involving Middle Earth are still fresh in your mind.

Yes, it is not centered on one certain character, and is written seemingly like a historic accounting, as you said, Semj. It is also confusing at times with all of the names to remember, but all that takes is a little back trek or looking in the index and things to refresh one's mind of who a certain character is. Basically, The Silmarillion tells of the ages before those of The Hobbit, and The Lord Of The Rings. Someone could certainly read this before, but I don't recommend it. So basically, it tells of how the three races were created, tells of mythology-like gods, tells of the account of the creation of the god-haven Valinor, and basically just all anyone would want to know of what happend pre-LoTR. It is a very good book, although boring in parts, it is quite interesting and I recommend it to anyone who wants to know further of Middle-Earth. ;)

Guest Anakin Solo
Why not just read whatever one that you yourself want to read? There has to be one on the list that you want to read, not taking what other people would read....:/
