Anime is more compelling than American cartoons. They are deeper, and the stories are much more complex, and deal with more thoughtful issues. Even the most lighthearted and straightforward of anime has these characteristics. Well, with a few exceptions, like Pokémon, and stuff like that.

Also, in Japan, anime is as important as any other show here in America. It explores the same themes, only animated. Anime aren't cartoons, it is a medium that encompasses all genres that shows and movies are divided by.

I think that pretty much sums it up for ya. ;) The last of the good American made cartoons is Transformers and GI Joe, and as you've noticed the animation on Transformers(speakin of "Armada" here) has changed to an anime style. That lets you know what people are lookin for in cartoons these days.

Lol, this should be interesting. Our feelings be hurt? Hmm, sounds to me like we've got a dubbed newbie on our hands.

Just asking why we like anime is probably the stupidest question to ask in this forum. I can go on forever in why anime is different from cartoons, and why there is no one that should be unhappy if they only knew how far it goes.

First of all, gore is hardly anything that comes to mind when comparing cartoons to anime. While this may be true, it is only because of the long list of restrictions on the part of American television, which has aparently turned into something that is edited in the case of young children possibly watching that show at the time. When you compare anime to things like Rugrats or something, there is really no comparison.

What Japanese animation does for us is create a world not too much unlike our own, but with a very strong story, a great style of animation, and with tons of different genres to choose from. These genres include things like romance, action, adventure, sci-fi, humor, horror...the list could literally go on forever. The story itself, for the most part, is very strong and really sucks you in, so much in fact that you really feel for characters when they die or something. Compared to cartoons and live-action, you could really care less. The sweet style of animation aparent in all anime seals the package.

Am I right in assuming that you've only been exposed to the likes of Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Dragonball Z? In the anime world, even most of us dislike those shows, and if you want to get a taste of real anime, try watching things like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and .hack//SIGN, but without the washed out versions on Cartoon Network. And may I also suggest watching subbed versions? That way, you can hear the original dialogue that was meant for the show. You may even like manga, which is kind of like anime comics.

I think that pretty much covers it. Next time, don't judge something like anime on those few bad ones shown on Cartoon Network. Otherwise, we've really overly discussed why we like/dislike anime in the past, and I see arguing coming from this thread, but I'm willing to give this thread a chance. Be sure to please explain what you think about anime in regards to American cartoons.

I think the man difference is that anime is for a wide spread in ages. All of Japan watches and enjoys anime, it isn't just the children, like in America.
Besides that the plots are far to great than American ones. Even the worst of anime plots are greater than any American cartoon's.
Another thing is that American writers can't seem to write too good, no offensive to anyone. Only a few cartoons have the same story through the entire series. Sure there are some animes like that, but there is still a "backround" story in them. Take a look at Cowboy Bebop, each episode is not continous with one before it(excluding two part episodes), but there is still charcter devolpment, and other things that take place.
So basicly Anime is better than American cartoons for their appeal to different age groups, their plot, and the writers, that have the knowledge and intelect to write anywhere from 26 to 300 episodes of script and plot.

I'm well aware that anime is nothing but Japanese cartoons. In fact, I watch Western animation as much as I watch Japanese. I'm just a cartoon addict. Unlike most people here, I don't prefer one over the other.

While both anime and Western cartoons have a wide range of topics and themes, finding a more explicit anime is a lot more common than finding an explicit cartoon.
Plus anime usually uses a different style of animation that I find appealing. The way a character might have light glimmer in their eyes, the unreal natural color of a character's hair, the way anime uses half as many animation frames as you'd expect from a cartoon... that's what I like about anime.

Oh, and one more thing...
Even the worst of anime plots are greater than any American cartoon's.
Let's not try to compare "Spongebob Squarepants" to "Tokyo Pig."

Im with Endymion.

I watch just as much anime as american stuff.

I like them both, but I like individual shows in both.

I dont like every anime, nor do I like ever "amerime."

I think its all about the individual show and when it comes down to it, the americans can make a good cartoon just the same as the canadians or the japanesse or the nigerians.

Anyone who will take the time to make a cartoon has a chance at making a descent one.

I just think its funny if anyone here likes anime more than every other kind of animation with no particular reason.

I persanally think opinions like that cited by endymion about any anime being better than any american show is just rediculus. That is the sort of opinion that shows a person who is only watching anime and is currently far more infactuated with anime than any other type of show.

Chances are many of the people here arent biased.

Although it should be mentioned that anime found its roots in american cartoons and that should count for something.

My reasons for liking anime are not anything like my reasons for liking American cartoons personally, but then again I tend to not watch the series and such that are talked about in these forums.

I mostly like anime films (sometimes OVAs or short series, but mostly films). The reason for this is mostly because the Japanese don't treat animation as some lesser art form compared to live action cinema. There are movies that could be done easily in live action in a way, such as Grave of the Fireflies... but I think the animation allows them to be a little more free with expressing their ideas, whether it's with something complex or certain colors or even something that simply couldn't be done in real life without an insane amount of cheesy special effects.

So basically, my point is that because the Japanese almost treat film animation the same way the US and others treat live action films, it comes off as something more memorable, interesting, exciting and meaningful than most of the standard cartoons or movies people are used to here. Sure there are the stupid anime shows and comdedies and whatever else, but that's how every form of entertainment is.

I have no idea if that made any sense, but it kind of shows some of my feelings about it lol. I must admit that I hate this generalizing that American made cartoons are always something stupid or goofy or whatever else. There is just as much anime like that, and I'm rather tired of the elitist thoughts many "fans" of anime seem to have on anything different.

Well, I know what drew me towards anime, and that was the animation quality and style. I've liked it since I was a small child. I like to draw myself, so that's where I draw alot of my style and technique from.

And I'm with you Transtic, your question was very to the point. It's like asking why someone's favorite color is blue, you know?

the main reason I find anime worth watching is it has stuff that cartoons in the U.S. just cant have. It has the plots that cartoons here can't have. The drawing looks way better. Thats pretty much why, I like them. I don't even know why I'm posting, everybody has already said the pretty much same thing.

you talk about it like you like it with spike spiegal and I at school and now you're wondering why everyone likes it(excluding Mage of Kraa). Well everyone before this post told you, and now it's my turn...

The reason I like Anime(and no you've never heard this before stratigyless) is because of the compelling story(stupid or otherwise) and the beautiful animations. And I must admit its is for mature audience(gore and all), but if ya can't take it, ya shouldn't watch it.

Although, that's not the reason for many other animes, what I really try to say is what's there not to like about it and what's there to like about amerime and cartoons. Thank you.

The thing that got me back into Anime when I was seven, was all the detail they put into the Characters. The facial expressions were hilarious too. ^^

I don't remember exactly which one it was, but I remember laughing alot before getting back into it.

Anime is a little more interesting to me than some of the American Cartoons. They seem to have a little more in-depth plots, and show some more feeling into the characters. On the other hand, American/Western cartoons don't really seem to have that much detail into the characters. I'm not saying Cartoons are stupid or anything, soo... ^_^; *walks out from behind chair*
