Transtic Nerve
Has anyone seen this movie? I was just a bit curious on what you know about the times, or even what was going on. I got my sleezy little hands on the DVD screener copy of this movie, along with a few other movies out in theaters, and despite being ungodly long, it was really good. We are learning about this time in History class right now at school, so it went along great. Anyone has seen it, and knew what was going on, what did you think? You have to know the basics to get the complete understanding onf the movie. They didn't explain alot of it in detail (Tamanny Hall for example wasn't explained) Anyway, what did you all think? I have a feeling not many here went to see this movie.
Juu
Wait... you mean it was actually out!? O_O *flips through Yahoo* ...wow. Here I was, waiting for it to come out. ^_^;;; I haven't seen it in theaters. Even though I was really looking forward to seeing it. I personally never liked Leonardo Dicaprio too much. Although he was pretty good in 'Catch Me if You Can'. I was looking forward to seeing Cameron Diaz in it as well. She's one of my favorite actresses... Solo Tremaine
I've seen it *ignores fact that is only 17 o_O;* I didn't like it that much. I guess it's a acquired taste, but I thought it dragged for too long. Bits of it I liked, like the music (Howard Shore strikes again), and I can't remember many other scenes. It was very dramatic, but just not to my taste, really. According to my film buff friend, it's one of Martin Scorsese's (sp?) more mediochre films. But I've never seen any others, so I've nothing to compare it too.
Transtic Nerve
It's not out on DVD, unless you meant theaters. A DVD screener is a DVD copy of a movie put out by the publishing company to send to like... cast members or just famous people. Howard Stern for example has a DVD screener for Gangs of New York. Well these get intercepted and encoded and put on the internet. Which is where I got mine. So it's a DVD of a movie still out in theaters. It's an interesting film. Not really a subject put on film much. So I thought in that sense, it was really well made, albeit, very exagerated.
conpiracymonki
Well it would be exaggerated...Baz Luhrmann! lol My silly English teacher's managed to make us all BL semi-fans, so I'll most likely see it, even if I don't have a single clue as to what's going on in the film o_o So yes.. when I can, I'll be seeing this *kills his teacher*
Charles
Most people I know didn't like the movie, but I thought it was totally awesome albeit drawn out. Daniel Day-Lewis's performance as "The Butcher" stole the damn show. I could feel the character, he was real. Everything from his mannerisms to his voice just pulled me in. I usually try to stay away from Leonardo DiCaprio flicks just because of his terribly flat acting, but much to my surprise and delight, the cast wasn't too shabby. The film touched upon Irish immigration and discrimination nicely--which also took me off guard. I wonder if anyone else noticed how the Irish only spent minutes on American soil before being carted off to fight an American war. Plus, the movie depicted the very first ghettos, Irish influence on politics and the venting of their frustration on African Americans. Of course, Gangs of New York wasn't perfect (I still can't see Leo in a tough-guy role). But, it wasn't nearly as dreadful as I thought it'd be. The last scene with the cemetery and the evolution of the city is particularly beautiful and memorable.

eleanor
Daniel Day-Lewis's performance was AWESOME. You're exactly right, Crazy White Boy. You could literally feel the character in him. But I think that was the only thing good about it. I heard the director tried to make th movie for like, twenty yrs. or something, and he finally got to make it, so I admire his ambition. But, I think he didn't make the great movie he wanted to.
