Smoking...

Umm... I don't really like the idea of smoking, because first of all, I start coughing if the person at the other side of the room is smoking. I don't think smoking immediately makes a person a bad person, and just the fact that someone smokes makes them stupider/cooler/popular... etc.

I don't think I'll ever start smoking. There's a lot of reasons why I don't. No one in my family has lung cancer, and everyone's trying their best to prevent it.

It can make you sick. ><

I really have nothing against smokers everyone is free to do what they want, if they smoke that's their choce and anyway everyone knows the dangers with smoking.
The main reason people at my school smoke would be the thought that its cool.
I myself fell into that trap in my first year in highschool but never really smoked a whole cigarett only a few drags, but after I relized what I was doing (which was later in the year when a friend offered me a bong) I stopped.
But then growing up as a passive smoker it wouldn't matter if I smoked or not. There is no hope of either of my parent's quitting, and they've been doing it since they were both 18 nither of them have gotten anysort of sickness from it yet and they're both pack-a-day smokers.

Although I don't like when people dropp cigarett-buds on the ground, its really messy. (I'd continue but then I'd be getting off topic)

Is smoking like bungy jumping? Do we do it because we know we can and there is a risk involved? It is a proven fact that humans live for a rush. People love to be close to danger, but will never admit it.

Nah, it's nothing like bungie jumping. It's quite the opposite. Generally, people who begin smoking are young and have the "immortal" mentality. Death is so far off that they can't be touched. It will take years before smokers are living close to danger. Someone who wants to expose themselves to danger or "live on the edge" would be better off taking up extreme sports.

I don't know if some people begin smoking because they're nervous. Depression is a trait more commonly found in smokers than nonsmokers, but it hasn't been proven whether smoking causes depression or if depressed people are more likely to begin smoking.

Anyway, I will never smoke. The smell is unbearable, it stains teeth and fingernails yellow, and costs a lot of money. Plus, it's too much of an inconvenience. Hasn't anyone ever seen the stereotypical group of smokers huddled together, freezing to death? lol

Bans on smoking are becoming very common too. It's almost completely illegal to smoke in public in Delaware.

Rubs his head Hey now! He started it all I did was put my two sense in! o.O O.o Points at The One >.> <.<

This isn't fair, I'm gonna be black and blue by the end of this!

Anyways, Celia how do you get bad tempered? I'm really intersted to hear this. As far as I know most non-smokers are as rude as smokers. Heck in some cases smokers are kinder because they are "relaxed".

Lol sadly enough CWB I got an image of a group of guys huddled when you said that. Lol.

The whole thing about lung cancer is...it increases your chance of getting it. It doesn't garuntee it. How do we know that some of these smokers that got it, weren't gonna get it anyways? It just increases your chance of getting it. So technically it doesn't give you it! :p

i thought of something else. my mom used to smoke. it's ironic, b/c i used to get on her case all the time about it when i was little... hers & my grandmother's (i think a part of me associated the smell w/ old lady, lol). the first cigarette i ever had was one i swiped from my mom. if your parents smoke, you are much more likely to. they're just much easier to get.

funny story. you know all those "after school special" type deals where the kid is tempted to smoke by popular kids? he tries to play it off like he's trying to quit but eventually gives in. then he takes a drag & coughs up a lung b/c he's never done it before.

now my impressionable mind decided one day, "hey, i'd better practice smoking so i won't look dumb if that happens to me." so the show had the opposite effect. i'm serious, that's really why i started. just for practice so other kids wouldn't make fun of me.

hey, it was junior high. popularity was everything, esp. to a nerd like me. what can i say. i now have a 10 year habit. i am such a moron.

Tsk Tsk Tsk, shame on you smokers.
Anyway, I'm absolutely against smoking. Never have done it, never will. I can't stand the smell of it. Every morning on the bus to school, this one guy gets on, and you can tell he's been smoking because about 5 seconds after he gets on the entire bus is filled with the smell of smoke, and sometimes it gets pretty nasty, like up to the point where you have to hold your breath since it's that bad.

Many people that are trying to quit give up after about a day, and say that it's too hard because the alternatives just don't work. I'd think a better solution to stop or at least reduce the amount of smoking would be to half the amount of smoking you do every day, evenly spacing out time between each one, untill you're down to 1 a day, then just quit altogether, and no more problems. I guess it's easier said than done though, and I personally don't know the addiction problems it has.

Well that's what I think anyway

I used to be on my mom's case to stop smoking aswell Lady M. It is so ironic it's not funny.

CWB, I'm usually in that group freezing my butt off, lol. Pathetic really, but yes, I agree with you that the younger generation do consider themselves untouchable. Thats why I go bush diving etc :). But seriously, I know how bad it is, I know the consequences etc etc, but I have no want to stop, at all.

Oh yeah, the legal age here in the UK is 16 to by and smoke so...o,O;;

Thanks Lalaith, now Juu's gonna be looking for me to hit. *runs away to hide* *finds a marshmallow*

Damn, shes close.

Yeah, that really gets to me...I wish some non-smokers could just relax about it [though most of them are cool with it]. We just don't all need to be preached to ;)

As I continue rambling, I think it also really depends on age. So many of the younger members here are SO against "bad" things like driking and smoking, which, admittably, is a good thing if you have the willpower to never do those things. However, you don't need to think that you're going to be damned for all time if you try it once. Maybe it just makes me feel ridiculously old [even though I'm not!] when I talk about the things I do and everyone else comdemns them :shifty:

Blah blah blah, I think I've said enough for now ^_^
I condemn no one for smoking. It's just that I really hate to think where they might end up in life. Every cigarette smoked is life shortend, life that that person deserves gone forever and ever. For never to return, each cigarette takes that, as you fully aware take it.

My Mom smokes. My great-grandma used to smoke. My Grandpa used to smoke. So many people in my life have smoked.

Everyday I tell my Mom, I ask her, I flat-out tell her she needs to stop smoking, because I'm going to hate seeing her when I'm older hooked up to oxygen, breathing heavily, all because of smoking. I also cannot stand it when my Mom smokes in the same place I am. I literally hold my breath and hastily leave when she's smoking. I hate second hand smoke.

My great-grandma's already sitting in a nursing home, hooked up to an oxygen tank because of what she did in the past. What she let cigarettes take from her, what she let all smoke away forever. My great-grandma's pretty much a shut-in now, but my family and I try to see her everytime we're up there, and tell her she's a good person, that she's still beautiful.

But looking at her, it really dawns on me how much I really want my Mom just to stop. Just stop. But I can't force her to stop, I can't help her unless she makes the decision herself. Unless she takes the prerogative and takes a step forward, with her mind turned the right way, and herself thought out and found. It's only her that can make that change. Not me. No one.

So all I can do is tell my Mom to stop, and hope she takes it true someday. I can't possibly imagine how hard it would be to quit, but if someone else's done it, then it can be done.

So on the subject of cigarettes, I hate them. Loate them. They are such pointless things. All they are good for is tying someone into a rancid, cold, absolutely life-robbing death.

But for those who smoke, I see it as something that will hopefully change. And I see that they have a right to do what they want with themselves. So good for them. As long as they know what they're doing.
