Yeah.. like humerous sites that really don't have any porn, but may have some 'dirty jokes' or something retarded like that. That makes it blocked under 'tasteless humor'! What is that BS!

Luckily I can access the forums I go to.. for now! oO;

We have computers here at course which use Web Marshall, and it is the most stupid piece of crap in existence.

It hsn't blocked me from theotaku however, but it keeps popping up on safe websites saying "block pornography" and sometimes, a pop up porn ad will be allowed through!

fortunately, our webmarshal has a bug, you can leave out the www as in http://www.theotaku.com and make it http://theotaku.com, and webmarshall doesn't pick it up

I suggest that. Just to get to safe sites.

EDIT: here is a list of it's instructions.

Block Pornography
Block mp3 downloads
Block Gambling
Block large downloads (admin specified size limit)
Block dancing (a joke on Deus Ex's thread)

And i am all for the blocking of them, just when it blocks things for no reason is bs.

Our school blocks anything we go directly to, or atleast everything I go to directly. Like gamefaqs. And OB. And TheOtaku. And RPGamer.

Anyway, our school thingy blocks only direct things. So we type in the addresses now in google, and go from the links there ^_^

*is thankful he has BnG and 8-Bit atleast*

My high school was notorious for setting strict controls.

Besides obvious keywords, such as sexual innuendo and swear words, any site containing the word "ball" was automatically blocked. Also, most video game sites were blocked because of the word "game."

Candystand was blocked a long time ago because it was popular in my school. The old slugfest game was as well.

Otakuboards was accessible for me, because that's where I found the site in the first place. TheOtaku.com is probably blocked in your school because the person manipulating the settings most likely considers anime a form of pornography....

We used to have an easy-to-bypass Novell system, but we got a new one called WebWasher this year. It's not exactly very strict, as it lets me access theOtaku.com and here, but it does block other things that are quite dumb, like an image galllery related to 14th Century art and other things. It's quite annoying.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with downloading MP3s at school...it's only illegal. :/

As for this subject; a lot of anime-related sites seem to be blocked by controls such as the one your school has. It sounds stupid, but there are a lot of people who don't distinguish between hentai and anime.

My school has web limits just like any other school, but I have never really had a problem with it. I could always get to these boards, and that is all I ever really did. Even if I did, there are plenty of ways around the controls. Every website has a number. If you can get that number and type that in as the web address, you should be able to get to where you want to go. I believe the process is called "pinging" the site. I am not sure where to find the number of the site, as I have never had to do it, but that is what the word in the hallways is.

Well, my school bans everything under the sun. It even blocked hotmail and yahoo so i can't work on my dang school website I'm making with Geocities. They also won't let you download anything and they don't have winzip so I was screwed for my project of where I had to get the game I made to the school computers. They're just evil...

Downloading mp3s, like Piro said, wastes bandwidth... which in turn will slow other people connected to the network down (especially if several people are doing this). Not allowing it also lets the schools avoid all the copyright arguments that go on... And honestly, you're in school to do schoolwork (or I suppose browse the internet), not to download crap.

There are more ways around it... I remember reading about a site that would load other sites within itself, basically blocking out all the filter stuff. It worked for some people, but not everyone.

Thankfully, my school doesn't block anything.

I would say that some one in the teachers staff or administration at your school is into hentai.

Its not that the otaku has anything to do with hentai, but some jerk thats into hentai just might try to block anything that came to his mind when it came time to block everything possible.

Its also possible they just looked at every site that came up in the records of sites visited and decided that the otaku was not related to anything for school, hence... blockage.

I think that sucks for you to not be able to access the otaku, but I guess you should be doing school work in that place anyway.

I mean, maybe schools have changed since my day, but I was only able to go online once in a blue moon, and when I did, there were nazi teachers marching the line behind each of the students.

I would just suggest trying to find away around it although I doubt that would be possible.

Good luck.

I can't even access OB on our school's computers. The only site's we're actually allowed to go to are Yahoo.com, and our school's official site. >>; Alot of websites are blocked at my dad's office, just so the people won't be surfing through golf sites during work hours. ^_^; Although, it doesn't seem to block any of the sites I go to...

To bypass any moderate-level block system, via Windows:

Open a command prompt, via Start|Run|"command" or Start|Programs|Accessories|Command Prompt.

Type nslookup www.website.com (or ping www.website.com if nslookup gives Bad Command or Filename).

Find the line that says Address: 209.123.85.4 or Pinging www.website.com [209.123.85.4]... and write down (or remember the number).

Access the site (type everything) http://209.123.85.4:80/, or generally http://x.x.x.x:80/. That should work. If that fails:

Search google for "free public proxy server" or the like, unless that search is blocked, in which case the word "pr0xy" can be substituted. If you can't find one:

If you can, download a proxy server to your home machine, and leave it on during school time. Find your own IP address (x.x.x.x) using winipcfg or ipconfig at the DOS prompt, depending on version. Leave it on and dialed-out (or otherwise connected) during the schoolday. Theoretically. (This is not a recommended option.)

Either way, with the IP of a proxy server, go to Tools|Internet Options|Connections|Proxies (IE) or Edit|Preferences|Advanced|Proxies. Enter this number as your HTTP proxy. Then access pages normally.
Until 8e6 became X-Stop, steps 1 through 4 worked perfectly. :)

I can access OB but not theotaku. Theotaku is blocked because of the guru thing. Where it is under NERV Child.

The last time I tried to get on OB at my school was 2 years ago. I don't know if they blocked it there, or if they still let it. I haven't even used a computer there for awhile now.

Schools are evil and the teachers and computer moderators are Nazis. Well, maybe not Nazis... Just communists... heh. Just kidding. The web crap they put on pisses me off so much. Well, they can't get away with it much longer, because of the god blessed people on places like OB who figure out how to get around it all. Where would the world be without teenage hackers? Gotta love you guys, keep up the good work. I got a project to do now, so I'll be heading over to www.schoolsucks.com. Whoops, you all arn't supposed to know about this site...are you...? heheheheheh... Oh well....

My old high school used to have a filter on it that blocked porn, hotmail, and prevented users from installing any and all programs and changing the desktop settings. They were only good for reading and downloading non-porn images and sounds. The funny part is that one out of every three people knew their teachers' password to turn off the filters. I remember walking into the computer labs and seeing desktops with anime wallpapers and AIM installed. There were also a few folders on the server that contained NES and SNES emulators and games.

A couple of years ago, my cousin gave me a screen name under his AOL account, but he put me under one of the parental settings. I couldn't access any anime websites because it couldn't identify Japanese words (ie. anime, manga).
