Splinter Cell GBA

Woohoo. Ubi Soft is releasing Splinter Cell for the Gameboy Advanced. This is probably going to be the best stealth title to ever be published on the GBA. I am just confused about how stealth elements will work in a 2D game.
The only real surprise here is that Ubi is planning a Game Boy Advance version as well. While the developer is unknown at this time, it will be interesting to see how this otherwise fully 3D stealth action title is adapted to a 2D platform.
This will probably be a totally different animal than the next generation Splinter Cell games (duh). But, what I mean is, judging by the 2-D screen shots that the game will play down the stealth aspects in favor of a more action oriented approach.

You will be able to hide in closets or on pipes to conceal yourself obviously, but stealth in the Xbox version was closely tied with lighting. I don't think that it would be such a bad move changing the portable Splinter Cell into an action game. But, who knows? :shrugs:

It's sad that Ubi soft had to axe the "P" for the GameBoy Advance version though. It will sorely be missed. But, hey, I'm sure it was sacrificed for much greater things....

Lol, for a second, I didn't get what you were talking about. *adds the "p" to the title* :) - Desbreko

The screenshots look interesting but I dont think im going to get the game. I might have played it if it was an overhead view and left in all the stealth aspects but how much of the game can be left intact if it is 2D. Lighting was very impotant in the X-Box version and it looks to be taken completely out of the GBA version which means alot of th fun factor is missing.

Not necessarily. Remember, this isn't supposed to be a straight port from the next generation Splinter Cell game. I don't think it's pretending to be. The GameBoy Advance version will probably be geared more towards being action, in the vein of a shooter, like Codename: Viper.

I'm not quite sure, but I think I even see a grenade indicator in his weapon inventory. It's too small for me to be sure. So yeah, I think that the portable version can be fun. It'll just be a different kind of fun.

And thanks for bringing the "P" back Desbreko. ^^

Ah, looks like a fun game. It's a very different style, because when presented in 2D you loose the whole 'stealth' element. I imagine you can dodge guards, but not to the full extent available on the X Box version. Still looks like a great game though, but the FMV scenes kind of help the game run smoother, so a little work will have to be done there. Are the levels the same as on the X Box version?

Well this looks near impossible to get every factor right from the X-Box version. It's way too light, so it doesn't look like much stealth at all. The whole idea of failing the game if you get caught on a GBA title kind of sucks if you ask me. I would just prefer it to be more like Metal Gear Solid and roam around shooting people, or is it like that?

Still it looks good either way, even if it doesn't resemble the game very well! :box:

THe screenshots look pretty cool but it's still weird to play GBA games after youve played them on TV like splinter cell i've beat it for Xbox and if I get it for GBA ill get that weird feeling again like this game isnt all that good.

Yeh, basically agreeing with what Cajones and Iggy said, once you've played Splinter Cell, which is a very amazing game, based solely on the purpose of stealth involving light and dark. I doubt the GBA version will live up the 3D versions, but it will still be a great game. Just think of it as a different game all together, based around action instead of stealth this time!

Well, all though it isn't nearly like the other versions of Splinter Cell and I do think the name should have been changed for the GBA version. I think the screen shots look great. It looks like it would be a pretty fun game to play, and well the look of it really is just surprising to me. I don't follow the GBA very much, but this indeed is the best looking GBA game I have personally seen. It might be worth looking into sometime.

I don't like the 2-D stle. Wasn't the GBA supposed to be 32-bit??? If it was surely it can have better graphics that that. The MGS version is much better(my opinion). I might rent it or brrow it off a friend but i won't go as far as buying it. I think that the whole stealth aspect will be ripped apart!!!

I have to say, he does have a point. But, in lieu of 3D, we must remember that Nintendo was the first to make wide usage of Mode7 graphics (Final Fantasy III, F-Zero, MegaMan Zero, etc.), but we must also remember that they also have the limits of cart space. A completely 3D game, like the battle animations from Golden Sun and GS2 (which also employed Mode7 as well as 3D), would be completely oversized and we'd end up with Splinter Cell on the N64 or GameCube. Also, the engine required for Splinter Cell's darkness/stealth system would overload the GBA's 32-bit system. We must settle for Mode7 backgrounds, exceptional foreground graphics, and action and RPGs until Nintendo develops a more sophisticated handheld. And I don't think I'll live to see that day.
