Well, im not sure this will be allowed on these boards because of the nature of the question....but here goes!
Alright, Tabmow and me have been discussing the change Ranma goes through when soaked.
So heres the question in the simplest terms i can put it....

During the transformation, below the belt, is something grown or is something retracted?
Example when he turns into a girl, does it just go away? Or does it ya know......retract?
And when he goes from a girl to a guy....and so on.

He completely changes. Just like every other character in the show. When Ranma turns into Ranma-chan, there are no "left overs" lol. The entire external appearance and voice is changed.

It's not like... it pops in and out. It just goes away. There is no real rational explanation for it lol.

There is a possible rational explanation

This is an interesting question I will weigh in on the discussion from a comparitive anatomy viewpoint. first lets make a few observations about the transformations and magical springs of jesynkeo.

1) You turn into what ever it was that died in the specific spring.

2) All transformations are into different types of animals (Humans are animals for this discussion) there are no trees, plants, rocks, bulldozer or other non animal transformations . I'm sure a blade of grass or a pollon spore ,or some type of plant life has died in the water. Why doesn't some one turn into a tree ? The changes occur between vertebrate animals.* note I have not seen the entirer Ranma series so if there is an exception to this I'm am not aware of it and then I will gladly admit my theory might have a flaw)

3) Only the affected body transforms clothes, weapons, signs, etc. do not change. This raises questions as to the "magical" nature of the springs.

4) In vertabrate anatomy almost every organ in one species has corresponding organs in another species. So the transformations from one entity to another might be due to an auctual biological metamorphisis not just pure magical appearence and disapperance.
Sics ranma and onna-ranma are both human this would be a comparativly easy change compared to let say Shampoo who has to turn inta a cat. HUmans and cats have many of the same organs they are a different stages of evolutionary development. BUt a little "magic" water and boom the physiology changes in an instant metamorphisis.
The cat organs don't disappear and the human organs appear they just metamorphasize like a wearwolf. The springs probably have lycanthropic properties. To you specific Ranma question the metamorphisis might appear to me a retraction or a growth, but as male and female humans have basically the same equipment just at different levels of development due to horomone and chromosomes in the embrionoc stages, The term growth or retraction probably is as good a description as any.

Somehow thought R.T. probably did not take this line of questioning into account when she made the Ranma 1/2 series.

Hmm... Considering how slowly Ranma's transformation is, I'd have to say that when he turns into a girl, Ranma's male sexual organ retracts and then proceeds to morph more specifically into the female sexual organ.

And now for something completely different... well, not really.

I haven't seen very much Ranma 1/2 (just one of the movies). There's a question that's been bothering me for a while.
If femme-Ranma were, say, fertilized somehow by a male, what do you think would happen to the fetus if the "expecting" female Ranma suddenly turned into a man?

You can't have a rational explanation that really works, because none of that is really possible in the first place. I suppose it could be rational compared to the other stuff happening in the anime lol.

All I know is that I'm glad they never show all this stuff you guys are coming up with lol. I don't even want to think about how that'd look.

:( Man have I really sunk low when I'm answering this question but sadly I read up on the production notes of the show that in fact answer this question.

The transformation in which your thinking it "retracts" and so on is infact the wrong type of transformation and is more suited for monster type animes.

The producer of Ranma 1/2 went for the more "Magical" sort of Sailor Moon type transformation. If you want more evidence usually in animes where things "retract" or human bodies change physically and slowly they go through a great amount of pain. The fact Ranma does not go through any pain what so ever during his transformation points to the fact it's a magical transformation.

Also using common sense if your -__- "you know what" retracted during a transformation trust me you won't be acting normal but screaming in massive pain. I hope this answers some questions posed in this thread, and this has been one of the more interesting topics...to say the least  in quiet awhile here. :therock:

*Laughs* I actually thought this was pretty funny to read. You guys have way too much time on your hands to be coming up with these strange and off the wall questions. But at least it makes for some sort of interesting conversation?

Well, my opinion has to go along with Semjaza. It just completely changes from male to female. No retracting or anything of the sort along with it. It's supposed to be a comedy and I'm pretty sure Rumiko Takahashi was not thinking about the scientific aspect of it when she wrote the series.

Yes, you people do have too much time on your hands, as do I. I think of insane things myself sometimes.
Oh thats just wrong

But i agree, some people do have too much time on their hands. Some people spend their whole time in fifth period on forums posting threads with no point.....
