SS5 Gogeta
Did Nintendo create Pokemon before it was ever an anime? I'm just wondering because Nintendo is really proud of it and they don't see it as a problem to their image (i don't, it was the reason why I got a GBA in the first place.) I'm just asking if they created pokemon and are making a lot of money from the toys and the franchise so they're really proud of it. P.S. I don't have any problems if this thread gets closed as long I get answer I'm happy.
The One
It should be closed, lol. But yeah, they did invent it first. Pokémons Red and Blue were out a long time before the Anime series was ever released. Nintendo are making a lot of money from Pokémon. All the toys, posters, etc etc have made them tons. Not to mention the licensing for the Anime. Hope that answered your question.
Desbreko
Actually, the anime series actually started a bit before the games were released. (At least in the US). The first season is based loosely on Red and Blue, though. And I'm not too sure about this, but I think Pokémon was created by GameFreak, and then Nintendo bought them. So I don't think Nintendo actually created Pokémon originally, but they do own it. And this should just be moved to the Pokémon forum, not closed. *moves*
Kei
I do believe you're correct in your assumption, Desy-B. Pokémon the RPG was created by GameFreak, who was then bought by Nintendo. And I do think that the animé was created before the game, as I've read some of the mangas, and I get a feeling it went that way.
GinnyLyn
My undestanding is that the manga came first, perhaps? That's how it usually seems to happen in Japan. Manga--Anime--Game--Mechandise. Though in this case, the games followed pretty hot on the tail on the manga. Could anyone please confirm?
Desbreko
I have one of the mangas, actually (though I can't read japanese). It has the number "1" on it, and it says "©1995, 1996 Nintendo/Creatures inc./GAME FREAK inc." on the cover. I don't know if it's the first one, or what, though, since I can't read japanese, it just has the number 1 on it. I forget when Red and Blue were released, though. Anyone remember?
Guest ryo
i think they were released in 98 right? but think cartridge said 95/96 on it as well, i think game freaks created pkmn but nintendo bought them out and created a goldmind....i wish i was as smart as nintendo to get something like that going for me ^_^
Desbreko
Lol, stupid me. Nintendo has the release date of pretty much every game on nintendo.com. :whoops: Yeah, Red and Blue were released on September 1, 1998. Before the title screen on Yellow (I don't have Red or Blue), it says 1995-1999, though, and it was released in 1999, wasn't it? And if Red and Blue were released in 1998, wouldn't it be 1995-1998? So if the manga has 1995-1996 on it, that would mean it came before the games, in 1996. Anyone care to check what the copyright dates are that come up on Red or Blue just before the title screen?
Nate
Red has this: (c) 95, 96, 98 Game Freak, inc.
Desbreko
Okay, then, I guess my manga is older than Red and Blue. So there's the answer: It was a manga before a game, then probably a game (don't know when the japanese release of R/B were, but the first season of the anime is based on the game, so I'm assuming the game came first), then probably an anime.
SapphireKumamon
The first season is based loosely on Red and Blue, though.
The first season is mainly based on Yellow. 1. Ash gets a Pikachu, while Gary gets an Eevee. 2. In the game, you can't evolve Pikachu unless you trade it. In the show, Pikachu refused to evolve when he had the chance. 3. Lt. Surge is a big similarity. In red and blue he had a Voltorb, Pikachu, and Raichu. But in Yellow, he only had Raichu. That's how it was in the show as well. 4. Jessie and James. They weren't in Red and Blue. 5. In Red and Blue, Giovanni didn't have a Persian. To make a long story short, there's almost nothing in Red and Blue that can be connected to the show. Everything that's on the first season is from Yellow.
GinnyLyn
Mmmpff, I'd argue that Yellow was based on the show, to give kids a more "I'm Ash!" kinda feel.
Desbreko
Indeed, Ginny is right, Yellow is based on the show, not the other way around. They made Yellow after most, if not all, of the first season cartoons had run, and they decided to include some things from the show. (And if you'll remember, Ash is one of the preset names you can choose at the start of Red and Blue; that name didn't come from the cartoon). So, Yellow is based of the anime, and the anime is based off of Red and Blue.
