vegeta rocker
I have been considering this animes first volume and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on it. I know it got best scifi of 2003 or something like that, i love the character designs and thought i should give it a shot.....my decision has nothing to do with the hot main character......i swear.......Stop looking at me like that! tabmow
What is the story line in the series. Art work a series does not necessarily make. If the charachters are well drawn it might not be a good series if they just over emphisized the art work. Before I spen $30 for a dvd I would research it a little. I have been burned on a few dvds that had excellent art. "Nia Under 7" UGH ! I had to force myself to watch the first dvd I bought it because the artwork looked good. do a little research. If it won a scifi award it warrents more investication, but I seriously doubt that its main charachter could hold a candle to Ruri Hoshino or Yurika Misumara. Of course I am refering to their commanding presence or their control of the situation not some horomonal wierd anime attraction. You know that there are wierd people who have wall scrolls and statues of their anime favorites around their houses, now that just wierd. Oh, well I have to go dust Ruri I mean my bookshelf.........
vegeta rocker
Tabmow.......Tabmow.....Tabmow must we play this game of ring around the Ruri? You know i research all stuff before hand. Those Newtypes aren't for nothing. But here is the story off the top of my head. This dude (forget name) is around in this time of alien invasions and what not. Well he dies and Mr. X brings him back as Ryu Soma. He is sent to replace a dead pilot at this arm of the UN called The Funeral. The Funeral is pretty much dedicated to ridding the area of aliens. Which by the way are not clearly mechanical or organic. Soma pilots a SARG and looks quite dashing in his pilot suit if i may say so myself. I find some things i hear about it interesting, like Mr. X quoting Shakespear and one of the other pilots name being Guenevere(as in king arthurs queen) and one of the teams members composed of multiple aliens named Frank has a weapon called Excalibur. Sounds cool. So in other words, go dust your Ruri, no pun intended.

Dagger
Woo, necromancy. :animesigh The thing about Argentosoma is that it would have been so amazing as a twelve-episode series--heck, it could probably even have been cut down to a six or seven episode OVA without much damage to the basic story. The main storyline is strong and deals with some great themes, but as awesome as the twist in volume 5 is, it's not worth sitting through almost twenty episodes in which neither the characters nor the plot really go anywhere. I eagerly sat up straighter when I reached Ryu's
breakdown
in episode 22--but it was way too late, if not too little. I'm almost tempted to say that Gasaraki compares favorably to Argentosoma, but this opinion could be colored by the fact that it's been a while since I saw Gasaraki, and also by the fact that I spent real money on Gasaraki (whereas I've just been renting Argentosoma). Both series have a certain dullness to their characters. In Gasaraki's case, though, this seems deliberate. In Argentosoma's case, there are many scenes in which they try valiantly to make the characters grab you and almost succeed, but somehow the connection never quite gets established. It has a lot of promising adult characters, and yet they end up falling flat. I do like Ryu and Hattie a lot... I hope the ending doesn't disappoint. ~Dagger~
Veritas
I really like Argentosoma, I have all the DVD's, which is kinda cool because if you take the first letter from the first letter from each word of the title it spells out Argentosoma. Another Reality, Getting Even, No Tears, Outside Sanity, Our Memories, Annhilation. Anyways, by no means is it the greatest series I've seen. Like Dagger has already mentioned the characters seem kind of dull. Though I think they did a really good job of portraying Ryu's struggles, and the ups and downs he goes through, thinking back about the show he is pretty psychotic. Hattie and Sue are about the only other characters that seem to have personality, and even then Sue could be argued. The story over all is interesting, they do a great job in twisting the story in ways you'd never expect, but other than that I think the story has a dull sense to it too. The fight scenes aren't that exciting, and the character interaction isn't the best. Ryu's and Dan's ego battles do prove amusing sometimes. I had hoped they would have done more with Ryu's and Guenevere's relationship, but thats just my inner fanboy. I really do like the designs for "Frank" as well as the SARG's I think they did a good job on those. I like it but over all I would have to say that it's just a Mediocre series, don't expect much except plot twists, and a semi-psychotic main character and you'll be good. I think they tried to make something that was compairable to EVA, and it just lack the personality, and the information, nothing really gets explained fully, there are a lot of gaps anyways, I'd still reccomend watching it.
vegeta rocker
Wow, crazy. This thread is three years old! I figured i would bring this thread full circle and end it. ^-^ I bought the series and now have the whole set along with the t shirt. Its one of my favorites. Getting the box was interesting work though, i finally bought the first one again for 10 bucks to get it since i got the first one as a gift. Argentosoma can now be purchased for 6 bucks a dvd or 40 for the Anime Legends Collector set. I never quite thought of it as a collector set for anime legends but meh. Ryu Soma is awesome! I love his hair too.
Dagger
My feelings about the last disc can be summed up by the fact that I didn't even notice when
Guenevere
died. Did that really happen on-screen? My mind must have been off in the clouds... oh well. And here's a pertinent question: why did Sue
turn white
in episode 25? Totally bizarre. ~Dagger~

They never said it point blank in the anime and i only know it from reading the article Newtype ran before its initial american release and from Guen saying the doctor didn't catch her with his magic wand when she was checked in after her Sarg awoke. As for Sue; I'm pretty sure she was just intended to have a dark tan the length of the series. I guess you can say that they overdid it a bit but Nana's sister in the Nana anime looks like her (sue) and they make constant remarks about her tanning too much.
