Chicago

I'm a big fan of musicals, and love to enjoy them whenever I get a chance. I know its an "acquired taste" to like Broadway, but my family has always been into plays and I was raised with shows such as Little Shop of Horrors and Oliver. I guess you could consider it a family "trait". When Chicago came out, I felt akward to see it. Bob Fosse always mixed great lyrics and music to his unique style of dancing (which in my opinion is strange). But after seeing this, I really experienced how great his work can be. Of course some of the actors were not casted correctly I think (RICHARD GERE AS A LAWYER DUDE? PLEASE...), but all in all it was a great experience, especially if you can't see Broadway shows and want to experience one without traveling. So, did anyone else see it? Comments? :)

I LOOOVE Bob Fosse. He's a god. His dance technique is incredibly hard to master, so it's amazing to watch people who can do it.

I loved Chicago, but I hated Renee Zellweger; she's skinny and gross and I really didn't like her in that roll. However, I love musicals and I especially love Fosse shows, so Chicago gets an A+ from me!

At first, I didn't plan to see this movie. I don't do cabaret. Then the other night, I found myself watching a making-of special on VH1 that talked about how the musical is based off of a real-life events and how hard everyone worked to make this movie. (The director passed-out on set. Dancers walked away with bruises.) I thought "I'm gonna hate myself in the morning for this" and went out to see Chicago.

I'm actually surprised by how well the movie was made. Usually, musicals involve dialogue followed by a spontaneous song (then repeat). The director arranged most the songs in a way that made them seem like fantasy sequences. Nice touch, really. It actually made the movie seem more realistic than your average musical.

Spoilers... more or less
It looked like Roxie was so obsessed with being a singer that she tended to see certain situations in song-and-dance numbers, complete with an audience to perform for. It took the regular "I'm emotional, now I want to sing about it" and replaced it with "Reality is boring. I want to imagine their conversation with music, costumes, and elaborate stage lighting." When Roxie's husband lied for her at the beginning, she didn't sing about it aloud; She imagined, in her head, singing about it to a packed audience.
There. I saw my musical for the year. I am now cultured. Now if you'll excuse me, the loose-plot action-packed summer blockbusters should be coming any month now.

Gere has did a movie once where he played a lawyer that I seem to remember doing very well. I believe it was "Primal Fear", but I don't quite remember. Richard Gere is an excellant actor, and all the charachters are, as far as I'm concerned, cast perfectly (Mrs. Zeta-Jones especially, since she has prior experience as a Broadway singer).

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've heard the song, "All That Jazz" on VH1 lots. ^_^;

I was actually really surprised about Katherine Zeta-Jones's singing ability...

I never really liked Reneè Zellweger very much. Alot of the characters I've seen her play got on my nerves... :twitch:

I was looking forward to seeing this movie, but my dad decided we wouldn't since his friend told him he didn't like it. *sighs*

Whee!!!!!!! Chicago! I loved the movie! I didn't know if I would like it at first but I thought I would give it a try since I liked Moulin Rouge. I really liked the Cell Block Tango and the song We both reached for the gun! Hehe I'm listening to the songs right now!

I LOOOOVE Chicago! I thought Richard Gere did a great Job. (Humph...) Catherine Zeta Jones was good, but I have a complaint about Renee Zellweger. She had no boobs for the dresses she was wearing! None at all. She had an okay dress, but other than, the movie was great.

Chicago is my new favorite movie... I love Renee, cuz Bridget Jones Diary is a great movie... I thought she did really well, after hearing her sing as Bridget, you are kind of in shock...
I also thought Richard Gere was great...
The cast worked really well together...

I'm sorry everyone, my previous post was not worded as clearly as it should've been. I totally agree with you! :) Richard Gere is an excellent, excpetional actor. His job in Chicago was superb, especially since he has no past experience with broadway. It was not till' recently that Richard Gere's great performance struck me. However, there might've been some better alternatives like I mentioned. All in all, the cast had wonderful chemistry. So, to wrap up my post, I'm sorry about my other reply. I should've really pondered about the film more closesly before jumping to conclusions. ;)

I loved Chicago. I went and saw it in the theatre when it came to Sydney and I thought the move was great. Richard Gere was excellent as the lawyer and I absolutely loved Catherine Zeta Jones...she was marvelous in her role and very sexy.

However, Renee Zellwegger (sp?) did not appeal to me at all..I think they did a bad job of casting her of all people as Roxy. At least they should have cast someone who filled out their costume a little better, as those costumes require cleavage.

Other than that I thought the movie was fabulous and I love the soundtrack.

I saw the special on VH1. They wanted to cast someone who
could kill a man, but be almost innocent enough for the audience to not hate her
. I'm not too familiar with Zellwegger's previous work (which some people seem to not like), so to me, she fit in the role pretty well. Hell, I almost thought Roxy was the victim.

*nods* I agree. >>;

I just got back from the movie, and it was fantasic! Bob Fosse did an excellent job, and all of the dance scenes were really, really amazing! It had the same feeling as Moulin Rouge with all the colorful costumes and backgrounds. (During dance scenes). ^_^;

I especially loved Cathrine Zeta-Jones. She was great at singing, and she seemed to fit perfectly for her character. I didn't think Reneè Zellweager would be so skinny in the movie, though. ><; She seems to look really different in all of her movies...

This was my first time ever hearing Richard Gere sing. At first, I didn't really think it was his real voice. ^_^;

The cameos were really neat, too. I got really excited when I saw them, too. ^^;

I have a gigantic grudge against this movie; it won best picture over LOTR:TTT. If anyone knew me than they would know that I am and have been for a while a big Tolkien fan, and anything related to him I love. Also ALL musicals put me to sleep, I don't care how amazing or spectacular they are I think they're boring. But if anyone likes this movie (and I realize that a lot of people do), more power to you.

There, sorry to anyone I affended I just thought that I would rain on everyones parade :);)

Lol, she looks like she is constantly two minutes away from death. Two or three years ago she had a great looking, full figure, but now she looks like a starving African child...bung :drunk:

I was actually pretty happy that Catherine Zeta Jones won best supporting actress and that Renee Zellweger didn't win best actress. Nicole Kidman is just way cooler than her :bow:

Bob Fosse died in 1987 :bluesweat:

He originally choreographed the dance scenes for Chicago, but he hasn't choreographed anything since the revival of Sweet Charity the year he died.

The dance scenes in the new motion picture, however, were choreographed by someone else. But, in the same way that the stage show Fosse was choreographed by two of Fosse's past principle stars, the dances were still very close adaptations of his dancing style.

Whew. I went on a Fosse tangent; I love that guy.

*nods* Nicole Kidman's my favorite actress! ^^ I'm really glad she won. I didn't reconize her the first time I saw the previews for 'The Hours' though. Her eyes looked familar, but I couldn't quite make it out. ^_^;

However, after seeing Chicago, I actually think it deserved it, even though I personally enjoyed TT better, too.

Ok I was going to post this on Saturday, after I saw the movie, but I didn't have a chance becuase of prom and time management. Anywho, now to my thoughts on the movie. I thought it was good. Though some of it seemed to drag on. I love musicals, and have been in many of them for my school, and seen many of them.

They could have casted the "Roxie" part a little better, and personally Renee's voice annoys me with a passion, but hey, others liked her. (I mean, as a singer, they could have picked a WAY better person, but hey, I think I could have done better than that, but about memorizing all the lines, I don't think I could have done that.)

I liked Catherine Zeta Jones much, much better. I think that her voice was great, and I liked her acting. She fit the part that she got, and I'm glad she got it.

Over all I enjoyed the show, although it did seem to drag (but that could have been becuase I was hyped up about prom). Anywho. I'd give it a 9. I like the dance seens, and the Cell Block Tango was funny.

The reason I went to see this, because I was a bit skeptical about it at first was because I wanted to see how others did All That Jazz. I did that song last year in show choir, and loved it. But I knew that it was in the show, so I got a few friends of mine to join me (one of whom was in show choir with me last year, and the other is just a good friend who is now in show choir with the other girl, and I am no longer in it due to time available - but like you really care to know that).

Oliver is a great musical as well, but I really like Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera. Then again, what can I say, the ones you see on stage are great, and a wonderful experience. I saw The Phantom of the Opera when I was in New York, and Les Miserables when it was here in Omaha. Great shows and highly reccomend them.

Anywho. There's my two cents.
