Ninjaman
A friend and I are debating which type of RPG is better. Turn-based or Action-based. I honestly don't know. My friend says that he thinks action-based are better. He thinks all turn-based RPGs are the same and doing the same thing, opening a menu and choosing an attack, over and over is pretty boring. I don't know which is better. I said this: In turn the player is forced to use all characters and get used to how they fight, in most action the player has only one character(Kingdom Hearts-Sora Zelda-Link)to use and get used to. In turn the player has time to strategize, while in action you have to think on your feet. Also when you notice, turn based RPGs are longer and action-based RPGs are pretty easy to beat, but that's my opinion. So what do you guys think? RicoTranzrig
I think a lot of it depends on what satisfies a person when they battle. With action, you have good control and you can dodge anything the enemy throws at you, if you get used to fighting. With turn-based, you can plan out your attacks carefully and think your way through the situation, and in some games, out think the AI in the game. I'd prefer the action RPG if it were multiplayer RPG's, then turn-based for single.
Guest Imsirion
I perfer turn-based. I like the thinking, the stratagy, the,uh, menus.... o.O But really, I think their a lot more fun. Planning and timing(like when to cast what, or heal when, etc.) can be challenging and its more appealing to me. I also like how their usually longer then action-based, but I'll give a-b their credits too. Running and fighting and what-not also gives some challenges which makes it fun, but sometimes its to repetitive, especially if it turns into a hack 'n slasher. Kent
I like them both. Action based can really draw you away from the traditional rpg that made people like me not like them for a long time. The action based games give you a feeling that your playing an action game and not just another rpg. However, the turn based game gives the player more access to exactly how they want to play the game. (IMO) The turn based also sticks to a more traditional game style that, and tradition can also be cool. I think that having a mix of games makes for the best experience. If you only play one, your missing out.
NeoCactuar
I think turn based is more of a strategic option; in action based games you can win battles by just holding down the Ok button and constantly attacking the enemy. In turn based it gives you time to think about your moves, there is no pressure to act, it makes it easier to let characters complement each others moves. Eg someone powers up another character that attacks, while someone else does a defensive or healing move. In action games there is more pressure to go strait away; constantly attacking will be enough to take down most enemies. Although in an action based game you can sometimes feel more involved in the battle, RPGers will know what i am talking about. All in all, i think i'm sitting on the wall. (Heh, a poet, and i diddn... No.... i wouldn't dare say that :P)
GhostofSalvtore
(I am the friend) I have never been the RPG gamer and so me talkin bout this probably has no bearing on anything But in some of the turn-based RPG's I have seen most of the people just use that same attack and not mixing things up. But I am more of an action gamer so this is why I chose action-based, maybe I will come up w/some reason that can support my statement but now I will go back to good ol' GTA VC.
I think its the oppisite, that being for a-b. You get your attacks and just use them. You cant really just use the same attacks over and over in t-b because of mp and such. (unless you have a lot of ethers or what not) T-b has a lot of variety in magic and you can earn skills by leveling up. Which brings up that leveling up and getting stronger, and earning new attacks is fun!
GhostofSalvtore
And that may be true and all, but still it just seems the same to me, and sure all games can be said like this, but RPGs are more apparent, do same attack over and over then get new attack, then do that over and over and get new attack, and get that over and over and get new attack, and so on and so forth But lately I see an action-game-drought coming up for me so I am considering renting and trying out this thing called- RPG. Blade
I really hate turn-based games!!!:flaming: They are so annoying. I like to dive into the action(normally coming out victorious). I suppose it's a matter of what you like... Regards Blade:naughty:
BigCajones
I reckon it's to do with the mood your in to be honest. If feeling relaxed and calm ready to get into a nice story based game then well that would be turn-based games. If your maybe in a bad mood or in a killing mood (basically not relaxed) then action based RPGs will be my thing. I'm not a big fan of RPGs, but I'm definetely getting into them thanks to some friends! ^^ I can't really decide although up until now I've always been an action type, so I guess for now they are my favourite! There seems to be less action ones though. On the GBA turn-based RPGs are my favourite genre as I think they are the most complex game to get for the GBA really. :D I still think it depends on your mood though. FF series is brilliant turn-based Zelda series is brilliant action based

Remember action based still can have large varities in magic, and leveling up. It's hard to try and sterotype any type of RPG system because there are always unique RPGs out there. Who saw a landscaping RPG before Dark Cloud?
Spikey
I like turn-based RPG's better. They make you think a lot, and sometimes they are very long. Like you said. Kingdom Hearts was kinda easy, but yet long. I don't play many Zelda games, and if I have, they don't appeal to me. I'm looking forward to the Wind Waker, to see if it appeals to me. I don't think the Zelda games are that long though. If any, I think at least 10 to 15 hours in it. So I think I'm going to have to go with turn-based. The action don't seem right, with the action jumping at you all the time. I like the strategic games, that make you think. Not games that do the story for you. Those RPG's are to easy. And they seem like demos.
