The Acceptable Stereotype...

I've sorta noticed that there are stereotypes that aren't acceptable and ones that people just dont care about.

Fact is, I'm Irish and and everyone who thinks they are funny tries to make jokes and insults about Irish people being drunks.

Or people from the south (america) are considered in general to be redneck trash.

Where is the political correctness, shoot, where is the general respect for your fellow man.

I know you all have stereotypes that you fall into, but who here falls into one of these stereotypes that is "o.k." to talk about?

You know, one of the groups of people who get killed and its not considered a "hate crime."

Hmm... I fall into alot of sterotypes. o_o;
Except it always depended on where I lived...

When I lived in Missouri and Texas, I'd always get alot of slurs about being Asian. I hate it when people do that. Slurs are so stupid.

When I lived in Europe, I'd always get teased about having an American accent. o.o;

In Cali, alot of people seem to think the girls on the dance team are all ditzy... about a third of us are in Advanced Honors though. Also, they tease me for living in Texas, and I remember alot of people making fun of me saying 'y'all' instead of 'you guys'. >>; The people who teased me got a lower GPA than I did.

I'm totally against sterotypes, because alot of times, people who sterotype others don't know the first thing about the people they're sterotyping. That really makes me mad when people say things about you when they've never even met you before...

Well, since I'm Puerto Rican, I'm supossed to be a drug-addicted punk. Also, I must cruise through the streets in a car that makes some freaky "boom" sounds.

If not overused, stereotypes can be funny. In my school, we make fun of all kinds of stereotypes (including race and sex), and they rarely get offensive.

I live in Nebraska. Some people do not even know we exist, lol. Those that do think we are the farmin' folk. We love our corn, even though Iowa is a higher producer of corn than we are. Just let me go put on my overalls!

It is amazing the Willa Cather was even able to write a successful book dealing with this state... While we are not our common stereotype, we are not that interesting either, lol.

If a Nebraskan was killed, I do not think much of anyone would care unless it was a really horrible way of being killed, in which it was an obvious "hate crime". But who could hate the farmin' folk who may or may not exist??? :p

Nebraska? Where's that? oO;

Ok, seriously...hee hee hee...ahem, again, seriously, yeah, I get the same thing for being a Texan. People automatically assume that since I'm from Texas, I wrestle with cattle, wear a 10 gallon hat, and have less sense than the squirrel that crossed a major freeway.

Wrong on all accounts. Top 5% of my class. Heck, I get bored in college classes, 'cause I feel like I'm not being challenged enough. If I could afford it, I'd go to real college.

Cows may be free-ranged out here, but so? There are no cattle skulls or deserts around here. It's DFW, and the smaller suburbs.

And I'd rather be dead than be caught wearing a 10 gallon hat. Though I've seen regular sized cowboy hats a few times on some of those out of staters that drive big trucks around.

Yes, Texans love pickups. ('Cept for me, but nya! :p)

We have the Cool group and the Nerds group here. :twitch:

The funny thing is, no stereotype here has anything to do with the origin you are from. If you look stupid, you're automatically a Nerd, and if you're good looking you're in with the cool.

....god know's where I am.

The stereotype at my school is basically the Adv. class and the Reg. class...regular classes are always saying R-E-G and for advance classes it's A-D-V....They look at us like we are smarter than everyone else, when we're no smarter than them, we just apply ourselves better...

I can't really give a stereotype for being black because where I live we really don't have that problem. Wal-Mart on the other hand has a stereotype with women I heard. They said on the news that the women were not getting paid the same as men....

You forgot about the stereotype that Texans can "turn a phrase." :)

I get quite a few stereotypes from people, until they get to know me. Some people assume that, because I'm black and I don't like to talk to new people a lot, I'm all rude and thuggish and anti-social. This was especially bad before I got my glasses and everyone thought I was snearing at them, when I was really squinting.

I just don't like to talk. When you get to know me, I'm actually a pretty nice person... and some people find that surprising. I never get into fights, but I'm not a push-over. I hate it when people assume I'm a rude person because I don't like to talk. I'm just too lazy to open my mouth at times.

A stereotype I once got was when someone asked if I was part Asian. In high school, all of my friends were Filipino, Chinese, and Indian. For some reason, someone assumed that I only hung out with them because I was partially Asian. I'm black, black, more black, and Native-American. :freak:
There's no reason most of my friends can't be Asian. Crazy stereotypes...

I don't mind that people assume that I can sing. I can't, but it's nice to have people think I can.

Stereotypes hmm? Well... I was in America recently and since I'm British everyone thought I was really prim and proper. Ha! Anything but, and I mean everyone expected me to be really educated and everything and I'm as immature or whatever as the next person. So, there's a strange stereotype for ya.

Oh yeah, and "apparently" I liked tea... That myth just ain't true...

Moving on...

Me, I'm from Wisconsin. ::is amused:: Drunk cheesehead-wearing Packer fans, that's us.

Heh.

Here's one. Just because I hang out with all the anime-obsessed, video-game-playing losers at school, people think I am one. Go figure. :p

Teh heh.

I'm 100% Irish in terms of blood, so I normally get the whole "you would always win in a drinking contest, hahaha" talk from friends.

I find it funny that people really can't look deeper into a culture, instead of just having a bash at things that they have heard about them.

Do you always win a drinking contest? Or have you never had one?

Well, I'm mainly Bengali, and most of my friends are either Pakistani or black. So we get the whole 'punks, hoodlums and curses' thing off the NF-type old people when we're running around town together.

And once this little Year 7 kid in school called me 'gay' because I said I had yet to get into a fight in school. O_o

So yeah. I don't like stereotypes at all either.

personally i think stereotypes are rude so i never make fun of people because of were thier from. im really careful about what i say.

i usually get called things like " anime dork, freak, and the ocasional coment about the way i dress" from the "popular" crowd.

there is some people in my school who like anime so im in the "scary" or "wierd"group.

i hate labels

People take Irish jokes a liiiittle too personally it looks like. Obviously there's more to Irish culture than alcohol and leprachauns... people just joke about it. THEY'RE JOKES. Not funny, I'll give you that, but what can you do.
I thought this would be a good time to bring up what I could do...

Maybe I could stage a rally or protest about the treatment of the Irish in America.

I could use the history from when my people showed up in America, which you need to learn about if you dont know.(it gives a background of the fact that we were once discriminated against badly)

I could also use enflamitory rhetoric about other groups of people who are stereotyped as drunks, yet if we talk about them it is seriously taboo.

I could even sue the corporations that currently exist in New York city where so many Irish people showed up and recieved the discrimination I speak of.

Of course Im not a little whiney political activist. (Im just whiney.. :D )

Point is, I dont really mind the stereotypes, I just like to point out situations like these, where some of the more liberal people often dissapoint me.

Oh well... thats just how life is.

The other stereotype about me is actually true. I'm a pale, red-haired Scot-Irish lassie who can drink any man under the table... heheh...
Bring it on!! I have never been sober enough to remember a woman drinking me under the table!!

About stereotypes, I am sick of white men being considered uncool and dorky. I'm hip, I'm cool, I can do the Macarena, I'm so trendy that I could be the first white Richard Roundtree.

But for real, Im also with heavens cloud on the whole idea of white guys being dorky I mean, dude! I have so many barry manalow cds.

And my life size cut out of steve erkle, theres no reason that people wouldnt wanna have my style.

With my super fly penny loafers and suspenders, I get mad chicks.

But unfortunatly I actually not as cool as a just explained...

Im actually just a plain joe.

Since Im a plain white guy, that means Im game for any stereotype and insult you can think of... Plus I dont care enough to defend myself on a day to day basis.
