Am I the only one who thinks things started going downhill when n64 came out?

Maybe it's just that i'm getting older and the lure of games aren't that much, but it seems that snes was a far superior system. You had more choices of games (there was tons of them) and there was quite a number of good games too. Sure n64 had some good games such as GoldenEye, Mario Kart, some others that I can't remember right now, but that was pretty much it. The graphics greatly improved, but the soul's of the games began to die. Now it's all about how pretty graphics are, not the gameplay. I fear that Playstation is beginning to follow the path too. PS1 had a good selection of games, and some greats such as FF VII, but now with the PS2 it seems to be following the course of N64. Does anyone feel like this?

Yes, the SNES was a better system, in terms of the amount of good games for it. The N64 had good first party games, but was really lacking in third party games. The GameCube, though, is pulling out of that rut. Also, the GBA is doing adsolutely wonderfully. I can't wait to see what's in store for the GCN later this year.

As for games being pretty much about how good the graphics are, yes, I agree, to an extent. It does seem that some games are pretty much just eye candy and not much else. Nintendo has actually been one of the best developers in terms of providing a fun game and not just good graphics, though. Even on the N64, pretty much all of their games were excellent and didn't really focus all that much on good graphics.

It's important to remember that Nintendo isn't relying on the GameCube in the same way that Sony and Microsoft rely on their respective consoles.

Nintendo is different. It relies on a combination of Game Boy and GameCube. And Game Boy is selling pretty darn well at the moment.

GameCube's library is already superior to N64. There are no questions in my mind when it comes to Nintendo's first and second party offerings. The key thing is third party offerings.

You have the Capcom five...the "Tales" series, Soul Calibur, Zoonami's project...Final Fantasy: CC...the list goes on and on.

GameCube is building up that third party exclusivity. For me as a gamer, that's an exciting thing; I really look forward to what GameCube has to offer in the future.

I'm a proud owner of an N64, and the lack of third party support never bothered me. The first game I owned for the N64 was Mario 64, and that kept me busy until Mario Kart and OoT were released. I played the thing almost every day until I received my GameCube.

Obviously the PlayStation 2 has one of the best selection of games ever, you have the option of playing any PS1 or PS2 game. I don't see how the PS2 is anything like the N64. I have always felt that Sony has very weak first-party games compared to Nintendo, but they make up for that with great third-party games.

But I'm much more excited about the future of the GameCube than that of other systems. Even if Nintendo's online strategy doesn't work out, the potential of the GameCube/GBA link-up is more than enough to make any gamer happy. And a new Zelda game is coming out in a few weeks, what more could you possible want?

I think part of the problem is that when you look back on games they seem far better than they actually were. It's a mix of nostalgia and most likely too young to realize that a lot of the games you liked were crap (I find this happened to myself a lot heh).

I love my NES, I probably have played it the most of all my consoles. I of course also love my SNES, because it had a nice assortment of games. Quite honestly, I think the PSX surpassed both of these in terms of the number of games I like and look back on... Even though there are games on the SNES and NES I think are far better than on PSX. I guess it's quality over quantity, if all that made sense.

I do find the N64 disappointing at times, but it really isn't. I play it the least of all my consoles, second only to the Atari 2600. Sure, Mario 64, Harvest Moon 64, Majora's Mask, Wave Race 64 and Ogre Battle 64 and so on are great games. Of course most of the 3rd party stuff was simply crap... But the Nintendo brand games were some of the best ones they've yet to make (I honestly liked the apparently disliked by the majority Mario Kart 64 heh).

When PS2 came along it was like nothing new in my mind. I was already securely tucked away in Dreamcast land enjoying all of Sega's odd games and the random amazing 3rd party game. Of course this wasn't meant to be, and I wound up having to get a PS2 anyway. To this day there aren't a ton of games on it I think are worth getting. Sometimes I think I own so many PS2 games just to justify my purchase of the system... But on the other hand, there are about 10 or so amazing games on the system (for me), with even more coming.

I think Gamecube started off slow but is quickly building up steam in terms of the games coming out. I'm looking forward to F-Zero, Zelda, FF:Chronicles, Harvest Moon, Giftpia and quite a few games far far more than anything I can think of on any other system outside of Fable and Star Ocean 3.

I think some of the magic of games is returning... It never died, it just kind of went down for a while heh. I find that some people simply outgrow games, and I like I said earlier, rely on nostalgia to form their opinions on new games.

Sorry for rambling :D

I still think the Dreamcast was one of the best systems ever. I never owned one, due to my extreme lack of money at the age of 12, but wanted one forever. My friend still owns one, and plays it all the time. Dreamcast failed for one reason I believe, It was far ahead of its time, and (OK two reasons) It took all of those crazy Japaneese games that the other guys don't release in the U.S. and released them. These led to its downfall by low exceptence from the game player lowlifes who play the ocasional GTA and some EA sports games and label themselves a gamer.

But back to the subject of whether or not the N is getting worse, I couldn't disagree more. Sure I loved playing Baseball Stars and Bubble Bobble 2 all day long, but you know what I'm more excited about the third party games that should be released soon. And now SEGA is all over the GCN (except for stupid SmileBit) (I wan't JetSet's and Shenmue's) I am even reaching new states of Hapnisity! (I know its not a word) SoAL and PSO take all of my time anyway (and yes I mean all) and that is the greatest thing one can have, a quality game from the makers of our favorite system, the dreamcast, on our precious 4"x6"x6", hopefully black (I'm watching you), chunk of plastic and ATI graphics. I look forward for what the future holds for Nintendo. (Man do I like parenthesis) Thank you and good day! :naughty:

Well I disagree, because I liked my 64, but my GC and GC library is very small, my Xbox, which I never even thought I would get, has more games then my GC. I dont know why, but all of GC's games that I have been in interested and the reason for buying the GC have either disappointed me or are not even goin to be on the GC. Now MP was the game to save them all, but I found it to easy and beat it in a few days(100%) then I fed into the PSO hype and got FSOD'd and now I have lost interest in replayig that. So as of right now my Nintendo console has not lived up to what I thought it would be. And other than the Wind Waker, there is no other titles that I have seen that would be even a good rental(but we will have to wait and see till after E3)(O and I also know bout those Capcom games that are going to GC but I heard those probably arent exclusives to GC)
PS-As to the remark Spyder makes bout game player lowlifes who play GTA and EA games and call themselves gamers, well I play those and I call myself a "gamer", so I am a game player lowlife, dont hate on those games, but I wont get off topic on that subject and just see you later.

The PS2 still has very strong 3rd party support and good developers know how to work around the system. So the more support a system has, the more people are going to want it. The Dreamcast and other systems die out because the company doesn't support it anymore, therefore, no one else really does.

Nintendo's getting back into things and becoming more popular by making it easier to develop for with it's larger medium and balanced hardware. So I hope they do hang on and make this system successful like the SNES.

Yes I meant only those games, and if thats you, I stick by this. Theres nothing wrong with just playing these, but claiming the label gamer for this, is a little broad and I think wrong.

As to your GCN small library comment, maybe thats because you limit yourself to the above games. If thats all you want don't buy the GCN. Nintendo makes systems for the gaming community, not the casual player.

The nintendo games now a days are boring and have no style. I have much more fun playing Xbox than i do playing my gamecube or my friends PS2. Im thinking of selling my gamecube because I the games are not gonna get much better.

Well, Saywha is really expressing a mainstream view here.

Would you say that games like Killer 7 or The Wind Waker have no style? I wouldn't. GameCube's 2003 offerings are some of the most "stylish" you'll ever see.

If anything, the GameCube's library will improve. Even though there are many great games available already, there's also a lot to look forward to.

I think the key is just to be as informed as you can. I think Nintendo went downhill in some ways with Nintendo 64, but I think they're actually improving things with the GCN/GBA combination.

I think that Nintendo has made many great games. Metroid Prime is one of the best games it has out yet. How can there not be a good game out of the 180+ that Nintendo has produced. I have a GCN and it has not failed me yet with a lack of good games.

The Cube has lots of RPGs? O_o Maybe in the future, but now it has...2 traditional RPGs.

Back on topic, I believe that things are starting to go uphill again. Games like Maximo prove that hardcore gaming is not dead, and all the genres currently have excellent current generation games.
While the best GC games are far between, it doesn't really bother me, as I don't have all that money (Zelda's probably my only Spring purchase). Also, now I have to support my PSO Hunter's License, which will probably give me a few hundred hours of fun (DC version game me 200).

But those and its "untraditional" RPG will keep you busy my friend. I've clocked in about 250 hours on Phantasy Star Online and still not putting it down. Unfortunetly my Cube has broken. I will most likely buy the platinum one, get MP, and a new controller. Basically the same price as repair.

Fastest selling console ever? Since when? lol Combined with the GBA, it only racks up around half as much as PlayStation 2. I think we've discussed this before...

Anyway, I do hear very often how a lot of people's favorite games were on the SNES, but I don't necessarily think they are getting any worse. I personally never owned a SNES, but I played them a lot at friend's houses, and I am having just as much if not more fun on my own GameCube. Games like Metroid Prime, while having a very high visual quality, keeps intense gameplay that can get much more in detail than old SNES games, in my opinion. Other such games hold GC together, and there are still more to come with Wind Waker and F-Zero, rival the overall SNES console. And with connectivity of the GBA, the possibilities are endless.

Fastest selling isn't the same as most sold. And I'm pretty sure it's the GBA that holds that title, anyway, not the GCN. I think the GBA sold around 500,000 in about a week.

In that case, I'm pretty sure that N64 must hold that title. I can't remember the exact number, but I remember that hundreds of thousands of units were sold in the first few hours. o_O

The GameCube was the fastest selling home game console ever upon its launch. That doesn't mean that it is the highest selling.

GBA has consistently set fast selling records throughout its lifespan. After the release of the latest Pokemon titles in Japan, GBA sold over a million units in a ten day period. That doesn't mean that it's outsold any of its predecessors; it's just a measure of sales growth within a short period of time.

I really liked the N64 but the Gamecube has a better library of games to choose from. But remember its not really how many games Nintendo makes in a period of time but how good the games are, although it is nice to have a large selection of games to choose from. Quality over Quanity.
