Upcoming games

Well, I've been doing some scouting around, and there are some new games coming to the PS2 in a week or so.
"Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter" is one, "Dark Cloud 2" is the other.

I have never played any of the BoF series , so I dunno whether to pick this one up. DC2 is a sequel to the ok DC, but from what I've been reading, DC2 should pick up where DC dropped the ball.

Thoughts? Comments? Other new games to add?

I'm going to be taking a look at the Breath of Fire game once it comes out over here. I liked the previous instalments, but not enough to go out and buy them. Hopefully this will change my view, heh.

Breath of Fire 5 is an extremely hardcore RPG compared to anything else in the series.

Save points are few and far between and require a rather rare item to use (although you can thankfully suspend the game at anytime, it's not a true save). You're expected to do the same dungeon several times over in order to get to most of its sections.

There are no healing spells, just healing items. You cannot even use any of your items unless you identify them in town first. Your inventory is also severely limited, as you can only hold so many things at a time (RE style).

And finally the D-Counter. If you use your dragon powers too often, it will simply kill your characters. Walking around increases the D-counter about .01% every 5 seconds according to Tokyopia. Using the dragon powers increases it by 2%. You're probably thinking big deal... But if that meter reaches 100% you die and the game ends. You're given the choice to load a save, quit or start a new game with all your current stats (kind of like the New Game + in Chrono Trigger).

This is a game I really think many people here will simply not like, but I know I'll love. I could be wrong, but I'd be careful of buying it. The game is still getting reviews in the high 8s though, so obviously it's not bad.

As for Dark Cloud 2, it's getting really good reviews so far and apparently fixes everything wrong with the original and then some. I've never played the original, but I'm looking forward to this.

There are honestly no other upcoming PS2 games that come to mind that I care to buy.

Edit - I completely forgot about Disaster Report. I'm planning on getting that too :)

I'm personally looking forward to both Dark Cloud 2 and Star Ocean.

I never bought the first Dark Cloud, but after reading various reviews...and seeing some movies, I'm greatly looking forward to the sequel. It's like Zelda with more RPG-esque elements. And it seems to be an overall great game.

The last RPG I bought was FFX...and I really haven't been buying many RPGs lately. So I'm eager to buy some of the newer ones coming over the next few months.

I am leery about dark Cloud 2 myself, since I already went through Dark Cloud. I never finished DC because...well, I got bored with it.

Yes, the Georama part is a LOT of fun (making your little towns with the Alta you pick up in dungeons). However, stuff that annoys me includes (in no order):
--the thirst guage (water gradually goes away on its own and you have to keep drinking water or else lose health)
--the breakable weapons (you can only use them so many times before they snap; and if you spend a lot of time on a super powerful weapon, it'll really tick you off ..)
--the monotony. Go into empty place, go to random generated dungeon, run around and pick up Altas. Whee. Fun at first, but it got old by the fourth town.

Anyways, I do hope that DC2 improves upon this (breakable weapons are still around, though >.<). The Georama is way better this time around. And the time travelling bit is also a nice touch.

~EDIT~
Well, Dark Cloud just came off with an excellent review. Seems like they took care of the breakable weapons dilemna--well, made it easier to handle, anyway. The visuals are astounding (I've seen a few pics, and yes, they are).

Breath of Fire: Dragon's Quarter got an iffy review, the biggest problem the issue with NOT using the really cool dragon power.

Another one, Vexx, is one I am looking at. A platformer that sounds fun, but again, an iffy review. Seems that there are no upgrades in the game, or a sparse few. Which is a shame, because that is half the fun of a platform/action game.

Most likely I'll get DC2 and Vexx first, and BoF later. Though I wish I could pick up some of the earlier BoFs.

I really do think that anyone here looking forward to Dragon Quarter better get ready for one of the hardest RPGs of their lives. I'm not even remotely exaggerating that. You are expected to die in this game -- and often, over and over and over. It's practically part of the gameplay given the way the D-counter is set up.

I'm not going to speak for everyone, but based on what I can tell from people's average RPG preferences here I really, really do not think many will want to just buy this game no questions asked. It has very little in common with the rest of the series, other than dragons and the basic characters (Nina and Ryu again). That's it.

On the other hand, this is the sort of stuff I love... so it's of course your own call.

I bought Dark Cloud 2 already. I will be playing it tonight and most likely will have some impressions up in its own thread soon.

I'm looking for a good game. Something that I know will get my attention. Which is Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Vexx, and Marvel vs Capcom.

I've heard many reviews, and they say these three games are really really amazing. Then again, I'm not much of a Star Wars fan, but I read the Bounty Hunter books, and I like them. So I saw it at the store and thought of buying it.

Vexx I saw in one of my Gamepro magazines. It looked really really cool. The review wasn't very good at all, but how he said the game was completely awesome, and he didn't say that often, got my attention.

Now Marvel vs Capcom. Since my first fighting game I played, Street Fighter, I have always been interested in fighting games. I thought that I should get SNK vs Capcom, but then again, I don't like SNK. Marvel's okay, but my main focus is the company Capcom.

So there are the tree games that I want. I think they are out, at least I know two are, I don't know about Vexx. I'm still looking. I don't think it's out here because I saw it was under Sneak Previews in the Gamepro magazine. ::shrugs::
