Right now for me its a gaming drought, mainly due to the fact that I am not an RPG gamer. But I would like to give one a shot, I have played though action type RPG's, Zelda, a little Kingdom Hearts, Secret/Legend of Mana, and pokemon. But I am still probably called an RPG beginner, so I would like to know of any of the new RPG releases this and next month(BOFV, .hack, etc.) what would be a good RPG game for a beginner such as myself.

I think FF7 is very easy to learn when starting out in RPG's. But if you're talking about new generation stuff, Dark Cloud 2 seems to be getting good reviews. The only RPG I have for the PS2 is FFX and it was good, but too linear. Xenosaga's coming out very soon so you might want to check that out too.

You've played Pokemon so it works pretty much the same way. It's not that difficult to learn an RPG...well, maybe FF8, but I got used to it in about an hour.

Well I can say that I often wonder about this very same question...

I have only played and gotten into one rpg deeply.

ff7.

Big mistake.

Yes it was cool, but not for the beginer if you ask me.

Yes it was easy to pick up, but it also was way off in many sense of what a first timer would want.

Example, chacobo racing and breeding and all that crap with the casino.(what ever it was called)

I think that a linear game would be best for a beginer.

In games like ff7 there was so much space and so many items to collect that were vital to proceeding through the game.

I think that from the way it sounds, ff X would be a good game for ghost of salvatore and I to start with. (or start over with again)

I still would like to hear about what everyone else has to say.

Well I have played bits and pieces of FF7 at a friends house and it was an....enjoyable game. But I am mainly thinkin of games that are comin out or has just come out so I that I can rent, and this also leads back to why I dont buy RPGs because I really only buy games that I know I will continue to play after the main story, like sport titles.(just a bit of info on me)

I've never really been much of an RPG gamer myself either. I always gone for the action packed games! I love the Pokemon games on the gameboy, because you can't get very good action games on the small little system so I really enjoy this turn-based game. You've played Pokemon games so you will understand and I also have the Legend of Zelda: OoT which I also enjoyed, because of the action involved. I completed this and for some reason gave up early on Majora's Mask for some unknown reason.

Until a month ago I was still hooked on too nothing but action games, and some various sports games (including wrestling, but NOT racing games!). Most of my friends chat about the Final Fantasy series and I feel a bit left out, so I borrowed FFX of a mate to find out what the big addiction is. It's true, it's pretty damn addictive when you get into it, so I advice this game. I haven't played the other FF games so I can't recommend them, but I hear alot of people are into FFVI and FFVII.

If you enjoyed the Zelda games get 'The Wind Waker' when it comes out (if you have a Gamecube), and also 'A Link to the Past' (if you have a GBA). Also if you want a game in the Pokemon series get either Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire. Watch out for new FF games being released on GBA, GC and PS2!

Hope I helped :)

Well all I know is that I will not be getting the new pokemon, for some reason something just clicked and just have lost interest in the game, I stopped after Gold Version, and I feel the same way as you do because alot of my friends are RPGers so they talk about RPG's like right now its Skies of Arcadia. Well I think I wil be gettin the Wind Waker and maybe my GC library will grow from there.

Suikoden for the PSX is the perfect game for a beginner. The storyline surpasses much of what is out there today and it's a relatively short game. So, it's a nice way to get your feet wet.

Plus, the first Suikoden isn't very nice looking. By today's standards it would probably be downright ugly--especially the characters' robotic walking animation. There aren't exactly a lot of frames there. Getting over bad visuals is one of the most useful things you can do as an RPG gamer. There is far less truth to that today since RPGs now look incredibly cinematic. But if you want to dive into the vintage classics, you're going to have to learn to suck it up, heh.

I would also recommend the Arc the Lad collection. I'm sure that the first Arc the Lad is short and sweet. And...it comes with two more games to help you become accustomed to the genre.

Well, if you want a very good classic RPG game, I'd go right for Chrono Trigger. It's not that hard to find, just purchase Final Fantasy Chronicles. The loading times aren't that annoying, as Smemj always rants and raves about.

Yeah, Chrono Trigger is a pretty easy RPG to get into. It's also pretty linear if you're looking for that approach. The graphics're not amazing, I mean it was only a Super Nintendo game.

But as Crazy White Boy said, once you get past the graphics (Which in my mind don't even make a game period) then you're left with something great, or not so great. Basically, if you're looking to start off into RPGs, you want one that's good. Choose something that many people say is something that you would like. But to tell you the truth, I'm not really sure what games to exactly recommend.

Some have said Final Fantasy 7, and I do somewhat agree. It's a very deep game and easy to get into. But I'm all about the classic games, so I say Chrono Trigger. Great game if there ever was. Just choose a game that you know you'll like so you can begin to grow and understand what kind of field of game you're playing. Try something you'll have a good time with.

Really? My first RPG was FFVII, it got me hooked, and to date, it is my favorite. I found the liner game play, which eventually led into deeper game play was just right for me. It didn?t seem to much of a challenge.

i reckon any Rpg game is a good starting point for anyone. If the person has the determination they will get through it easy enough. Its just a matter of getting used to it.

Take a look at how different final fantasy changes in each game, u have to get used to them each time u start playin a different one.

GhostofSalvtore I think u should just borrow one and lock yourself in your room for 3 days and play it non stop.

There isn't really any RPG I recommend for beginners. I know most people here got started on FF7, so perhaps that's best.

I will say there are many you should avoid unless you know what you are getting into though. Stuff like Lunar, Persona and Dragon Quest are a bit more hardcore gameplay wise compared to the average RPG and might scare some people off. Personally, I love them.

I found Final Fantasy X to be a good RPG for a beginner. The battles are fun and easy, and the game isn't too challenging. It also introduces you to the breath taking cinematics and in depth story that many RPGs have. I don't like it compared to other current RPGs like Skies of Arcadia or Suikoden III, but I think it's the most appropriate for a beginner.

Games like Kingdom Hearts and .hack really aren't traditional RPGs, more like action games with RPG elements (upgrade in items, leveling up, deep story etc). Hence they are placed in the action RPG genre.

Skies is a perfect RPG for a beginner, but it's pretty challenging, especially the boss battles. There are quite a few random battles, so new RPG gamers might be turned off from them. But it's got a fun story with great characters, and the battles are fun, customizable, and easy to work with. I know you like challenging games, so I can see you enjoying this one. There are also a ton of secrets and I know how you like to get 100% in games.

So FFX and Skies are good RPGs for a beginner. Oh, and also Pokemon, but you don't like that.

FF7 was my first RPG, a friend recommended it to me.

I found it hard but really intriguing. I did miss some valuable items but because of the quality of the game and the different ways to evolve the character. I had more fun the second, third and forth time I played where I found all the items and developed new strategies.

I have now played and finished it a countless number of times and if it weren't for the bad graphics, which now annoy me, I would still play it now. Not to say that I won't again some day.

Xenogears short? Man everyone who played that game never clocked below 80 hours their first run through. However the game is a just a testament on how awesome a game can be. But I think its too complex story wise for begnners. I would say a SNES game instead like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3 (6), and Secret of Mana.

I know very few people will have heard of this one, but I own a very, very, very obscure RPG called "The Granstream Saga". It's not real flashy in terms of graphic, but the story is decent and the system is very, very easy to get used to, not to mention it's fairly easy to play through.
