I remeber making this thread a long time ago, like when I was new. But new faces and new opinoins have made me make this thread once more, just for the heck of it. What was your response to Aeris death? Where you surprised? Did you know it was coming? Did you think she should of died a more painful death? Do you think she never deserved it. Or did you yell in horrible outrage of all the levels lost :P

I found the whole thing to be rather unemotional and in the end rather uninvolving. I think her death was really played up for no good reason, as if no other important and likable character had died before her.

I'm not exactly an FF7 fan though, so I doubt many will agree.

Well, I was pretty pissed off, since she was one of my favorite characters in the game up to that point. It made me really enjoy trashing on Jenova-LIFE afterwards, though, because I was pissed.

After playing FFIV, where practically everyone but your end party dies, gets heinously injured, or just leaves, though, it wasn't all that shocking. Heck, even some of the members of your end party make you think they're dead, but then they come back, lol.

Oh, it was AWFUL!!! I didn't see it coming! :bawl: (I hadn't spoiled myself at the Internet at the time) And during the whole rest of the game I waited for her to come back, but... she didn't. :(

It was rather disturbing as she had all these limit breaks and weapons I couldn't use after the... incident. Well, to my opinion, it would have been much better if her death had just been temporary or something...

Well, I'm 100% sure that IF they make a sequel for FF7, Aeris WILL make a comeback! (We did see her spirit(?) at the ending scene of the game, didn't we?)

It shocked me. I mean, I never cared either way for Aeris, but in that holy place, by Sephiroth--I think it shocked me more that Sephiroth killed instead of Aeris being killed.

And the worst of it is all the little reminders you get afterwards--staffs are still for sell, you pick up the L4 break about that time (if you didn't earlier).

But yeah, it felt GOOD to slap JENOVA around afterwards...I believe that is part of the reason the programmers constructed it that way. Very rarely had I felt such pure emotion like that.

I keep saying that, if that's how I felt about a so-so character, image if they had killed off one of the ones I actually cared about. *stares at still existing PS* Lucky you.

I remember it like it was yesterday, i got to that area, i knew it had been coming cause i browsed through the player's guide but when i actually saw it i felt like a huge hole had been put through me, i mean never have i felt so emotionally drained after i saw that, Oh boy did Jenova get it from me! I was extremely pissed after that. So yeah I hope Aeris will come back to life if there is an FF7 sequel.

*feels heartless now, but has to say it*

I really didn't like Aeris at all. She seemed to leave this 'I'm meddling with your business' feeling with me, wherever she showed up. And she wasn't exactly a good person in a battle either.

I kinda knew something was going to happen though. Like how even though I rarely played with her, I had gotten all her limits straight away, and some super-slotted weapon. >.>
But I kept thinking all the way through she might return stronger and better, or something.

And I'll admit, even though I couldn't stand Aeris, her death-scene just made my jaw drop. But I forgave Sephiroth because he's so cool. ^_^

Hehe.. one of the reasons I originally bought FF7... an ad showing the scene where Cloud drops Aeris into the water.
I didn't know what was going on obviously, but it looked so cool...

I agree whole-heartedly Semji.

My eyes didn't even open wider... Just the way through out the game Aeris showed herself, i never liked her. I actually smiled when she died o_O

I already knew that she was going to be killed. Certain reviewers were a bit sloppy and all but painted out what was going to happen.

Nonetheless, actually seeing Sephiroth plunge the masamune through her was a memorable moment. Aeris was a pretty lovable character because of her innocence in the situation. The translation was a little lackluster, which probably took away from the emotional appeal, but if you think about the circumstances in which she died (looking up at Cloud with an innocent smile after being savagely beaten by him only a short time before), it was powerful stuff. Especially when the white materia bounced in time to the music and Cloud carried her to her watery grave.

As I said, the writing was just so confusing, though. Cloud's response to her murder wasn't very moving...

One argument is that Cloud was the typical anti-emotional, angsty character that was part of the trend at the time, so he failed to show emotion due to his characterization.

Um, when did he beat up on her again? The story right around that part is muddled in my mind. I know he kept trying to raise his sword to slice her in the Ancient Place, but I don't recall him actually touching her (which promptly Mr. Masamune himself to come swooping down like the Angel of Death).

I think the only part that really bothered me was the emotionless face on Aeris herself. Sure, her eyes widen a tad, then she slums over. Um, whee? No blood from her wound, no blood on the Masamune. The animation was really stiff, too (eSPECially when you watch the full form of Sephiroth pull the sword out of her again), which could have hampered the effect of the scene.

Very memorable scene, nonetheless. I might like to see this one reanimated with the abilities we have now, BUT I would hate to see the sadistic look on Seph's face changed from how it was presented in that moment. If nothing else, this very scene secured his place in the SuperVillian Hall of Infamy.

FF7 practically started that angsty trend, and I think we're still very much stuck in it (although it is definately 100 times better now). There were basically no other RPGs outside of FF6 at the time that I felt had a character like that, which is probably why it appealed to so many people (teens especially).

Why don't I think it's a good scene... Hmm. It's a hard thing to say. You (Ginny) basically came up with all the reasons I don't think it was that special.

The fact that there was very little interaction between Cloud and Aeris that made me care about their relationship (regardless of what goes on in Gold Saucer because you can totally ignore Aeris there if you want to... and even that was nothing special). Cloud was more or less a full of himself brat other than a few scenes up to that point, and him suddenly caring just didn't work for me - especially considering he stays that way afterwards anyway.

And like you said, the animation really messed it all up. I don't care about the lack of blood at all... And I don't really mind Aeris blank expression, because I really think she knew she was and had to die. It's just the whole scene was kind of eh. Cloud's complete lack of any genuine emotion other than confusion up to that point basically made anything he did seem just as thoughtless.

So really... if I don't care about the characters, why would I care if they die? I simply didn't. My best friend is one of these "OMG why did Aeris have to die!?!?!" people and I've just never seen why it's a big deal. FF7 was far from my first RPG, and there were so many death scenes that were more memorable than that (there are many in FF6, FF4 and other random RPGs I think were far more heartfelt and important). I'll never understand the big deal over all of it.

My first death scene was in ChronoTrigger (and the PSX cutscene made it all the more...damn, so emotional--I actually LIKE those characters!), and my second in FF7. I guess it depends on how much you've seen, heh. ^^;

But, if anything, you have to admit the Seph part was cool. And I've never liked Cloud that much, or Aeris either. Bah, I preferred Seph, Barrett, Tifa, Nanaki, and Cait Sith; all the other ones could burn as far as I was concerned.

Again, though, it was only the second death scene I had seen in games, so it was a big deal for me, even if it was only Aeris.

Well, I liked that scene. I never really cared for Aeris, not that I hated the character but it was just kind of "meh." Like one of the poll selections. But the scene did wonders for Sephiroth's character. I mean a lot of people liked Aeris, and Sephiroth murdering her got his character a lot of heat. This scene is one of the reasons I believe Sephiroth to be the greatest villain of all time, and one of my reason for liking him.

I've always like the bag guys, and this was just a scene of pure evil on Sephiroth's part. Which is why I was drawn to liking his character even more. I'd say I smiled, but not because I hated Aeris but because it was cool.

:therock: Dang, spike.

What bugs me is that Aeris' death was probably one of more impact to me than most of the ones I see these days. For some reason, I go "meh" a lot at characters' death. *is reminded of Legend of Dragoon and FF4* It just doesn't seem to have the same impact for some reason.

Which is why I guess FF7 is such a great game for handling the scene well. Multiple character embellishments at once. And Aeris' (or
Sephiroth's
) Resurrection is prolly one of the more, if not the most, common topic I see for Final Fantasy fanfics.

Even if most of us didn't like Aeris.

one of my friends did something stupid, (so long ago i forget what it was) and it really annoyed me. so when he asked me if FFVII was a good game i said yes (because it is) and i told him to build up Aeris because she is the best character =) i may have forgotton the thing he did to me, but i do remember the noise he made when Sephiroth stabbed her =) but when it happened to me i just brushed it off, cause i didn't use her all that much
