Ryuujin
I was thinking about this when I was in the shower. Over in Japan and other countries do they do the same stuff we all do but with American cartoons? For example do they import subtilted(in Japanese) Sponge Bob Square Pants episodes? Or Rugrats or something. I haven't been to Japan so I don't know...Just one many things my mind comes up with. -OD
VP-Master
That's a good question. I know a lot of the popular US cartoons make their way to other countries. Shows like "The Powerpuff Girls" are dubbed into Japanese and shown there. I don't know about spongebob but with its popularity, its might've made its way to Japanese TV and if not, maybe translated to DVD and sold there. Some US cartoons that are popular here tend to make their way to the international scope so their are prolly plenty of them out there.
James
US cartoons are kind of like what anime is in the west. In other words, it's kind of a niche market. American 'toons do get shown in Japan (just as Japanese 'toons get shown in the USA), but I'd imagine that American cartoons don't come close to the popularity of Japanese cartoons.
Guest Hikaru Ichijyo
Yes it's true programs like SpongeBob and other US cartoons are imported to Japan. However in Japan they don't subtitle them but in fact dub over the english episodes to Japanese. Trust me watching them in Japanese is probably just as weird as watching an anime that's dubbed... Manic Webb
*looks up "I'm ready" in Japanese* I couldn't picture Spongebob in Japanese. I can imagine how a Japanese kid feels about thinking of Tokyo Pig in English. Weird. :cross: I knew Powerpuff Girls were dubbed over in Japan, so I can imagine that a lot of popular North American shows are dubbed over there, too. Transtic Nerve
I'm surprised they don't subtitle them myself. They subtitle their OWN talk shows alot. Japanese is spoken so fast and depending on what you say it could mean different things. Alot of times they end up subbing, in the correct symbols obviously, a phrase someone says or a part they want emaphasized.... they do it alot on talk shows or somewhere where there is no script. There's always something popping up on the TV. I hear the Simpsons are pretty big there. The Japanese know their good stuff.
