What makes an Anime Charachter a Good Charachter

As I was chastised at one time for a favorites post and self banished my self from the boards for several months I am going to ask a question.

One of the things that makes anime such an appealing art form the the emotional connection that the creators are able to develope between their creations and the viewing public. In my opinion an anime charachter is only good if you care about what happens to them.

What makes an anime charachter appeal to you.( An alternate form of this question might be IF you could meet an Anime charachter who -or what- would it be and why)

Just to paraphrase Schmo Shiratori's quote from Nadesico " I know she's a wonderful role model, but she is just a cartoon "

and from "Who Frammed Rodger Rabbit"

"So now what Eddie , you dabbling in watercolor..."

That was very mean, but I think I know where tabmow is taking this question?

To me the personality makes the character and the events that make the character. These 'drawings' are made to be like real humans and therefore are trying to show human emotion. And the animators are able to relay those feeling on paper, and make the character. The outrageos faces anime characted make are kinda overboard, but if we humans could make your emotions as animate as the characters, we'd do just that, and it'll probably look like the animated characters in differnent shows.

Take for example Sailor moon. Everyone knows the various expressions she makes, when I feel the same way as her, may face is kinda making the same emotion seen.

AM I CONFUSING EVEREYONE!!!!!!

I think I'll stop now!!!!

Believe it or not, I've always believed that real human beings are inferior to animé human beings. If we are to evolve, that's the path we should take...

Anyway, back on topic- For an animé character to be good, he/she must convince the watcher they aren't just drawn actors, but drawn people, living in their own worlds.

where did darkunknowns post go?
mmmmmm you mess with tabmow and you awaken the fury of the Rocker.

anyway back on topic, if an anime character has a good and bad side i find them interesting. Characters that seem squeaky clean are no fun to see win. Because you kind of always knew they would. Now a hero with an agenda such as revenge or some other dark purpose has me hooked. Good artwork is a must as well, though not to say every anime should be of CLAMP quality, there would be too many pretty cartoons running around and it would turn into a fashion show. For example Blood Reign:curse of the undead yuma has mediocre art but the character wins me over in a second.
In fact after some consideration, here is a list....

1. A heart , no matter how bad they are every character has one deep inside.

2. Inner conflict, wether it's battling the forces of good and evil or evaluating who they are.

3.An agenda that seems ill fitted to the task they must accomplish, like killing a mugger while working for the devil.

4. A personality that tips the scales one way or the other, I don't like characters that are just alright with the world.
they have to be either angry or sad or vengeful. Kind of like a (Shinji-eva/yochikawa-GTO to Vegeta-DBZ-GT/Hiei-YYH)

5. A body and face that match their demeanor, like a angry vengeful one should be lanky and rough. A fighter can be any shape as long as he is imposing. A depressed one should have a nonchalance about him and drab clothes.

6. A chance or a reason to change always nagging them, everyone has a daily chance to change. They should too. Wether it be for a love or just for a better good or evil.

7. Back story, they have to have a history for you to pull reference from in order to see how they have or have not changed.

8. A weakness, it has to be one that the outside world almost never sees. It's fun to try and guess it.

9. expressions, not just facial, but their voices, you need a good voice for a good character. It totally affects your perception of them if they are a warrior and have a high squeaky voice.
Well in a nutshell these make up the perfect anime character for me.

A big, bad a** gun and the urge to use it.

Actually, I always like the characters that had a "righteous cause". For instance, Char Aznable and Anavel Gato (from two different Gundam series). As characters go, the ones with a righteous cause always seem to display the widest range of emotions, and always seem to have an understanding of thinks that would make a philosopher jealous.

Then again, maybe I am just another crazy supporter of Zeon. :p

I really think what makes an Anime Character a good character, is the ability to be able to identify with a character on a person level. Before you can like any Anime Character you first must be able to identify with them, and usually people like a character because they share similar attitudes, views, or personality traits.

In order to identify with a Character, usually you have to share things in common with them, so to answer your question. It varies from person to person what a good anime character is. I may say Rick Hunter is a good anime character you may disagree. So there really isn't a dead set answer to your question.

But to say the least this is one of the more interesting and well thought topics I've seen in Anime Lounge in awhile. ;)

Growth. Provided the character has any personality what-so-ever, it is important to see how s/he learns from and reacts to the situations that occur. It helps you to identify with the character on a more personal level. I love it especially when they make it easier to identify with the villian.

Basically, I prefer anime characters with a certain personality. Most of the characters who are always the best seem to get on my nerves often.

Also, they should be able to entertain you, at least make you laugh or feel some emotion from the anime. ^_^ They don't always have to be strong for me to like the best, just make me smile. ^_^'

To me, in order for an animé character to be good, they must have a certain something about them. There's got to be an attitude, or an edge, or a reason they do what they do. A good example would be Tasuki from FY. He's got two of the three points I mentioned.

Another thing would have to be the design of the character, and how the artist manipulates it at certain times when the character goes through a change of emotion. People who often go into SD mode (or Super-Deformed mode) like Serena, Tasuki, Ranma, and others grab my attention quick.

Since I really only get access to dubbed versions of animé nine and a half times out of ten, a good dub voice makes a difference to me. Characters like Vegeta are good. (This is just my opinion. You may disagree, and you have every right to, but I like it.)

Basically, they just have to be well-rounded in all aspects, like personality, looks, motivation, etc. Like many people have said, a character that's good at everything is really boring and tends to be disliked right off the back, but someone who has a severe fault like clumsiness (Serena), a drinking problem (Tasuki), a strong cursing habit (also Tasuki), and a tendency to make fun of people (again, Tasuki) are often ones who are fan favs.

1. A multifaceted personality/ multidemensional characters.
2. Compelling- having deeper ideals than surface value
3. Operate on a deeper level than making cool explosions
4. Motivated
5. Orriginality
6. Mysterious, and on the part of the writers/directors the anime cant be "telling" it must be "showing"

Well the reason we're inferior is because they can have limitless attidudes powers and things that basically aren't in our power to do. Not at this moment anyways. They are a belief a thought from someone's head just like they can do in movies.... But if we do evolve to be like them then there would be no need for them!!!!

Its all in the emotions. In real life, you can pretty much just tell when someones a real easy going, fun person and often that makes it easier to laugh at all the bad stuff that happens to them, the serious people seem almost perfect in ways. But there also has to be times when something devestating happens to that character and how they handle it. I think its saddest when something bad happens to the happiest people, to see someone cry who normally is completely happy is strange and extremly sad. I think its the same in anime. Most people don't want someone whos always wallowing in their own pity, but a character who doesn't take life too seriously, but still can cry and make mistakes. Complex charries are good, I love it when my fave charries have an inner self that they don't let out and they accidentally let someone see it, and it changes them, but a hard change. Actually, now that I think of it, that sounds like Kare Kano o.o;;

depth is most important, imo. if a character acts a certain way (like Asuka or Vash, or any other character), I want to know why (cuz I'm a busy-body :p). why do you think there are so few fans of small, supporting characters, and masses of fans of major lead characters (looks being put aside)? the more people know about a character or the more emotion a character shows, the more people can relate to and understand them; not a whole lotta people care too much about what happens to cardboard characters that get 3 minutes screen time and are just there to take up space.

A loud character with an outgoing energetic mood ready to shoot a gun at a moments notice and to acheive victory for ACROSS! but I also go for the perfect character as Spike from Cowboy Bebop (a tragic past an uncertain future and a kick *** space ship).

i like a character with depth, yeah, but even if they have that, it sucks if there isnt very good animation.

also i like a character who is either a bad a** mage, a very good martial artist (with a cool weapon maybe), or they have a really good gun at least.

a good anime character has to have voice to fit their appearance, or it'll be annoying the crap outta you the whole series.

they also have to have loyalty to their friends, they've gotta be ready to sacrifice their lives for their friends at any time.

i don't really go for somebody who is all righteous acting all the time. i like it if they have a bad attitude, kinda like vegeta from dbz.

I like the personality of an anime character. Plus, the physical features are very important. Like Duo Maxwell for instance, his braid is a big feature. I think it symbolizes his freedom and rebelliious nature. Plus, his personality is gleeful and carefree. He has the perfect traits.

Please put more thought into your posts. Most, if not all of your posts have so far been answered in a single line, and they include very little punctuation and capitolization. If not for my sake, do it for other so that they may read your posts more clearly and efficiently. And then you get into the posts themselves...I think that you could really expand on this particular subject, rather than say you want like someone with a sword who kills people. We would like to know more about their personality rather than that they "just don't care." It seems you don't care, either.

What I think makes a good character is their personality towards their enivorment. If a guy pisses of half of the people in a bar and then makes a fight happen and comes out with his drink in one piece. That's cool. But other characters with emotional problems are even better. They kinda tell you about your own life if you pay attention.
