Elsyan walked through the woods, lost in her own thoughts. She didn't notice anything unusual until an arrow embedded itself into the trunk of a tree an inch from her face. Startled, she popped out of her thoughts and glanced around. How could she not have realized that she had walked straight into a battle?! Elves and humans were going at each others throat! Elsyan groaned. When would they stop the fighting already? At this rate, they would kill each of the races off. She was about to walk away when one of the humans saw her.

human: "Look! There's another Elf!"

Darn them! Several of the humans also noticed her and were advancing. It's too late now, Elsyan thought grimly. She reached into her sleeve and drew forth a long dagger and held her staff ready. One of the humans rushed at her, but Elsyan knocked him out cold with a single whack of her staff. The others hesitated for a moment, but then they decided that they would chance it. They moved forward to attack.

Neo and Langal quickly learnt one thing about solitude. It made you a pain in the ***. At least, judging by Rali's behaviour. Or, more aptly, the string of sarcastic comments.

Leading them into the middle of a battle didn't help matters.

Rali: Well now, oh glorious leaders, shall we get involved in this outright travesty, this duplicitious, underhanded, undignified, thrice cursed, gods forsaken, farcious debacle? Or did you have some other plan running around in your oh so omnipotent heads?

They glared at him, and started to edge away. Too late. Several arrows flew towards them. They ducked away, Rali not letting up his quips, even as a lucky shaft traced a scarlet line across his arm. He picked it up, remarking nonchalantly:

"That's elven. So they're firing at us to."

A break in the arrows as the archers stopped to reload. Rali was on his feet in an instant, crowing about how stupid they were to not have fired in waves. A flight of arrows answered him. He swore and rolled forward, leapt to his feet, and ran. Neo and Langal stayed where they were. Not that they would miss him much....

He walked into another clearing. One elf, a female, multiple humans. He'd seen scenes like this before. They didn't notice him. Two humans were already down, one apparently unconscious, one sporting a ragged wound. The humans assumed he was an ally. The elf assumed he was another enemy.

As such, both groups were somewhat surprised when he leapt into the air, twisted sideways, and shot his foot into the collarbone of one of the humans, as he attempted to circle the elf. Rali landed, rolled, and came to his feet facing the other way. The elf waved her staff at him, forcing him to duck. He came up quickly, and had to twist sideways again to avoid a sword thrust. Viperishly fast, his hand shot out, his palm striking the flat of the blade, knocking it away. He stepped forward, bringing the same hand up into a backhand to the man's temple. Wrapping his hand around, he pulled the human's head down in kneed him sharply. His nose shattered all over Rali's knee.

The elf, not quite understanding yet, hit him in the back with her staff. He stumbled forward, turned around, and nearly took another shot to the face. He blocked with his left forearm, wrapped his arm around the shaft of the weapon, and pulled sharply outwards. Twisting the weapon left, he spun it behind his body, caught it with his right hand, feinted, spun left again, and struck the nearest human with a sharp backhand blow.

By now, the elf had gotten the point, and taken down the last human with her dagger. A swift, efficent strike up under the armpit, through the leather armour between the plate. He threw her her staff, which she caught easily. She studied him a moment before speaking.

Elf: What kind of idiot runs into a battle against multiple foes without even a weapon?

Rali: The best kind. The kind who is fully convinced he is god. Pleased to meet you, by the way. As I said, I am god, but most people call me either Rali, or get the hell away from me.

The elf just stared at him. But that was alright. Rali was pretty much used to that by now.

Percius swung his spear. It slashed an Elf's stomach. He turned quickley to see another Elf rushing at him with a sword. He brougt his blade up and rammed it against the Elf's sword. Pushing with all his might, Percius sent the elf crashing into a tree trunk. An arrow whizzed past his ear. Another struck his arm. Percius gasped in pain, but recovered quickly enough to dodge another arrow. He pulled the arrow out of his arm and then ran towards the Elf who fired on him. He was about to run the Elf through when another came up behind him and slashed his back. Percius turned to the Elf with the knife. One of the other Humans ran at the Elf who slashed Percius. With one blow from an axe, the Elf was down. Percius turned back to the Elf who shot him, to find that he had escaped. The battle began to get more violent as the Humans began returning shots from bows. Now Percius had to dodge arrows from each side. "Great. They've just got to make it harder for me, don't they?" he moaned.

"We must join or brethren!" Langal said, and ran towords the battle.

Before he evem put his foot down for the first step Neo grabbed him and pulled him back.

"So you beleive me about being an elf now, do you? To bad that seems to be the only thing I have said that you understand. We are not going to join this battle, we are going to stop it. Follow me!"

Neo ran in the direction Langal had tried to set off in, which gave Langal doubts about his sanity again. But Langal noticed a hill in the middle of the battlefield ,also right in Neo's path. Langal thought he knew what was going to happen.

When they reached the hill, Langal no longer had any doubts. Neo climbed up to the top with Langal right behind, and in a loud voice cried out

"Ethonath allamril tegnothan gotenath eledtril"

The entire battle stopped. Everyone gazed at Neo as though they had just woken up and were not sure if they were still dreaming.

"I bring grave news for both races. News that will require both races to forgive the other's past misdeeds.

"We can not forgive THEM!" almost everyone said at once

"SILENCE!" Neo yelled "You can not even remember how this war started, but I do. It started because of the Ner'Qual. They tricked your leaders, hopeing that the resulting war would do their work for them. But you have taken too long to eleminate yourselves, and they are coming to destroy you. I need to see your leaders so that we may prepare correctly for the coming invasion."

Rali turned, smiling broadly. As Neo finished his high and mighty speech.

Rali: Lo! Mortals all, ye shall not heed this imposter! Ye shall answer me the great riddle. The question that has plagued man and elves for millenia. "If I were a ferret, where would I hide?"

The was a profound silence. It was eventually broken by a muttered "What the hell?". The phrase was taken up, until it was almost a mantra. Neo just glared at him. Rali started laughing.

Eventually, the elf, caught up in it, started too. Neo started swearing. Eventually, the whole forest was reverbrating with laughter. Neo sighed. Even Langal was laughing. This would be harder than it seemed.

Percius heard the laughter of the warriors. It made him sick to know that these people were laughing like this when a dangerous threat was coming. He moved quickly through the crowds of people and towards the hill where neo stood. Along the way he spied Rali, whom he recognized as the boy who through the knife. Most likely, he as the one who shouted the dumb joke. Percius ran to the top of the hill. "SHUT UP EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!" he shouted violently. The people quickly truned their attention to the hill. Percius moved behind Neo. "Now you can continue." Percius sadi to him.

 • 2 weeks later...
"A human with manners, the world really is in danger." Langal laughed to himself

"Stop, now." Neo warned him

The soldiers on both sides of the battlefield were still disbelieving "Show us one of these... Ner'Qual...as you call them." One of the human soldeirs shouted.

"Very well." Neo replied. To Langal he said "Come, we must find and kill a Ner'Qual, to prove to these insolent fools that the world is in danger." To Percius he said, " You are welcome to join us, Percius, i beleive you said was your name?"

"That is correct, and I would be honored to help."

"Then let us go, we must find one soon, or it will be to late to prepare."

They left the hill and began towards the forest.

The unlikely group moved quickley towards the forest. "So, these Ner'Qual are the threat." Percius thought aloud. "Exactly." Neo confirmed. He placed his hand on the hilt of his bastard sword. "We must all be ready." Neo said to the all. Langal tensed a little. Percius gripped his spear tighter. "They could be anywhere in the forest, remember." Langal warned. The group stopped at the mouth of the forest. "Are you both ready to proceed?" Neo asked calmly. "Yes." Percius answered. "Of course." Langal replied. Without hesitaion, the group stepped into the forest.

They had a great dissapointment almost as soon as they entered the forest. The first was, since there had been storm clouds moving quikly over the feild during the battle and Neo speech, it started to rain. The second was, although its was raining, Rali spotted them, and brought over an elf with him.

"No, I refuse to go hunting for a Ner'Qual with him."Langal said, pointing at Rali. "Of all the humans I have met, none have made me hate the race more then this one."

"Watch your tounge, mortal. I am a god! And I was going to leave in just a moment, but now i beleive I shall come with you"

"I beleive we are forgetting our manners" Neo said looking at the elf who had followed Rali. "What would your name be?"

"Elsyan" The elf said

"Now we must go, if you wish to come you may. The rain will make it difficult to find a Ner'Qual. We need as much time as we can spare"

"What's a Ner'Qual?" Elsyan asked

"We will explain on the way, though you may think we have gone insane, come." Percius said over his shoulder, they had already start on their way.

Elsyan hurried to catch up with them them

The unlikely group of people walked quietly through the forest. Neo explained to Elsyan what a Ner'Qual was. Langal and Percius readied their weapons, just incase something came along. Rali walked along , not paying attention to them. He rushed through the rain soaked bushes, stopping now and then yo stare at something. "Just what are you doing?" Percius asked. "These seem to be tracks of some sort of animal.." Rali trailed off. "Let me see." Neo said. He moved up next to Rali and loked down at the mud. "Where are they? I don't see them." "Look closer." Rali said with hint of deviousness in his voice. Neo bent down more. Rali then quickley pushed him down, thrusting him into the mud. "Ha! The great Rali has done it again." Rali smirked, moving off through the woods. "Maybe we would be better off without him.." muttered Percius.

"That's about the only thing I agree with that you have said, human." Langal whispered to Percius. "None the less, he is a strong fighter and will prove useful in killing a Ner'Qual." And then aloud he said "If we ever find one."

"Hello Sergei, how has it been? Seen any Ner'Qual recently?"

Everyone turned to find that Rali was talking to a bush

"What are you doing?!?" Percius asked in disbeleif. "And please do not say you were just talking to that bush."

"Shhh. Sergei speaks. He says a Ner'Qual passed that way not to long ago" Rali ponted to the east

"We shall go that way then." Neo said

"I can't beleive that we're trusting a mad man to lead us. But I will follow since we have no other leads," Percius said

The five of them walked on following Rali. "Tell me again why we are following a bushes advice?" Langal asked "It's our only lead." Percius answered. "Yes, plus this human seems to know what he's talkign about." Neo agreed. "You're the only one who seems to think so." Percius argued. All of a sudden, Rali stopped. The group cam to a halt behind him. "Something's coming...." he said to then all.

They all drew their weapons and dropped into fighting stances. The bushes began to rustle.

*rustle rustle*

*rustle rustle*

A squirrel unexpectedly jumped out of the bush. Everyone relaxed.

"All hail the great god Rali" Langal said in mockery, kneeling on the ground

"Silence, fool, that is not what is coming." Rali said angrily

As if on queue, a Ner'Qual came out from behind a nearby tree and bellowed. Everyone dropped into a fighting stance again
