Queen Asuka
As a Senior about to graduate in two and a half months, college is one big thing that has definately been on my mind. I applied to three colleges: University of Georgia, Mercer University, and Wesleyan College. I got accepted at all three. Now here's the hard part: Mercer and Wesleyan are located in my hometown. My parents REALLY want me to go to Mercer. But what they SHOULD understand but they don't is that ever since I've been thinking about college, I've had my heart set on UGA! My mom keeps telling me she doesn't want me to leave home and she wants me to stay home and go to college. I REALLY am ready to get out of the house. It's not like I'm going to be that far away, just a 3 to 4 hour drive. Another argument of mine is that I will be the FIRST person in my family to EVER go to college. Neither of my parent's even graduated from high school. Shouldn't I have the choice to go where I want since this is such a big accomplishment? What do you guys think?
Semjaza
Sounds a lot like my situation. My dad never finished highschool, yet he is VP at his family owned business (which is doing rather well here). I don't know how far my mom got, but she doesn't work now anyway. For me, college was never on my mind. My highschool closed Junior year and I was stuck going somewhere I totally hated. From then I on I was in this "who gives a ****" mindset that really screwed me over. Luckily you're not heh. I originally went away for college, but for me it was a 7 hour drive to southern Illinois (let's just call the school Southern). To say I hated it was an understatement, but it was great to finally get completely away from my parents. I don't know if that's one of your reasons or not, but I'd guess so heh :) I wound up coming back here and going to school in our city, but if I didn't go to Southern I would have never known how it would have turned out. Even though I hated it and failed all but one of my classes, I was glad I went because it was a new experience. So for that reason, and the fact that you really want to go there... I say go to UGA and good luck :). You're parents will understand this I'd thing. College is something that affects your life, and it should be your decision. Deedlit
Well, it depends on what you plan on doing when you get a job, and it depends on which college has the classes that you need. *nudge* go to UGA! ;)
future girl
i think you should go. i'm only a junior and i already know i wanna go away for college. my mom feels the same ways yours does, but i'm still gonna go away. you should move toward what you feel helps accomplich your goals. now, your heart is set on UGA, then go. if that's one of your dreams, then you should fulfill it. one step closer, as they say. Queen Asuka
Another one of my arguments is that Mercer costs so much. It's like 20,000 dollars, and that's with me NOT living on campus. With me living on campus at UGA, it'd be about 12,000. And that's with a meal plan and everything. I could walk to all my classes. I could have a job to have a bit of extra spending money, but that's all I would need. It's so COMPLICATED...*dies*
Semjaza
I'm sure UGA has some sort of work study or on campus jobs as well, which would make that even better. They don't pay well, but at least they are close (and usually pretty damn easy). You're not going to want to have to pay back $80,000 going to Mercer... at least I wouldn't. I'm paying $10,000 a year and some banks/loan places are already trying to hit me up for money. It's not fun, and my parents don't help me with school whatsoever... so it's all on me. Really... do both schools offer what you want? That's really the most important thing.
Queen Asuka
I want to major in Genetics and UGA is the only school in Georgia that offers that major, but my mom's argument is that I can take my core classes and then transfer. But going to Mercer would be a big waste of money in my opinion.
PiroMunkie
If you want to go to UGA, and it gives you everything you want, then go to UGA. College is your choice. It is your life. It sounds like UGA is better, anyway. :whoops:
Semjaza
I get what your mom is saying, but it doesn't really make sense... If I'm understanding you heh. When you take core classes, you take them at a community college or something and just get them out of the way. It's meant to save you time and money. Going to an even more expensive school for the core classes makes very little sense. If she did mean a community college type deal where you take the core classes (that's what I'm not clear on, sorry), then that is actually a good idea. It will save you a lot of money, but since you already know what you want to do... You might be better off just jumping head first into it. Queen Asuka
This is what my mother meant: Core classes: Mercer, 20,000 per year. Core classes PLUS my major: UGA, 12,000 per year. Now, what do you think is the wiser decision?
Manic Webb
Normally, I'd weigh the pros and cons, but in this case I'll just tell you to go to Georgia. :p You really want to go to UGA, plus it costs less. It's only a few hours away, so you can always visit on holidays and most weekends. It's all your decision, and if you really want to go to UGA, then you should go. You are young. You are strong. Love is a battlefield. To Serve Man is a cookbook. Follow your heart and go to UGA. Geeze, I really should've moved away for college. This is one of the biggest decisions of my life and I want to make the right one. Semjaza
Heh. That's what I thought... it's not a good thing to do. Paying back loans is not fun, especially when there is a good alternative. Sounds to me like your mom just doesn't want to let you go and have you grow up without her being there (or something in that vein). I guess you'll just have to sit her down and explain to her why you want to go and what it means to you. College is kind of the point where you have to make your first real decisions on your life. High School might seem like it, but it really isn't until you start applying for colleges (at least in my opinion). I'm sure you love your mom and all that, but she just cannot be the major focus of a decision that is going to affect where you go in your life. Change
Simply put...GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!!! Go where is right for you, not your parents. Look at which one is the best for your interests.

I wouldn't have moved 2,000 miles away from my home if I didn't believe that going to whatever college is best for you [no matter how far] is the right decision. I'm sure that if you end up going to UGA and doing well, then I bet your mother will be able to see that it is important to you and able to get over the fact that she just wants you close to home. I'm glad that my parents didn't reign me in and keep me close to home. I'm glad that they could get past their own complexes see what was best for me, not them. I know that you'll do well wherever you go, Tori, but I wish you the best and hope that you get to go to your school of choice :)
Guest Hikaru Ichijyo
;) Well Tori it's pretty much obvious what you should do and that would be to go to UGA! A.)It's cheaper and has what you want and B.) Your going to be 18, -__- your more then old enough to make your own decisions. Independence is a big step that needs to be taken in life, and almost always your parents won't understand and accept it. But keep in mind, a person has to live their own life. Only you have to the power to make the ultimate decision in your life and your parents have very little say in what you do from now on. *Grins widely* Welcome to the real world Tori, this is just one of many tough decision you will have to make in your adult life. :D
Desbreko
What you should do, is tell your mom that if she wants you to go to Mercer for your GE classes and stuff, she'll have to make up the difference in price, since it's so much more expensive and you wouldn't be getting anything for that extra money. I have a feeling that might discourage her a bit. :p But really, you've got Mercer, which is more expensive and doesn't offer all the classes you want. Then you've got UGA, which costs less, while offering everything you want. I don't see that as much of a choice, since UGA is obviously the better way to go. I mean, really, your mom is going to have to let go sooner or later. You can't stay at home forever.
TheShinje
I say go to UGA and good luck. I am not going to college because of my full scolarship at Carich's fine course. But that's beside the point. Over here, our education is far different. Over here, we have high schools calling themselves colleges (ugh) Your mom and Dad should accept the decision you've made, and if not it's their problem, there comes a time in evryones life when they have to star living for themselves It might be upsetting to your parents at first, but they'll eventually accept it anyway. they're most probably jus worried about you venturing into the wide world anyway
Kei
I know what you mean, Tori. It so happens that my mom is trying to do the same thing. I plan on going to a completely different school as soon as I'm old enough than what she wants. I say you should try to talk to your mom on an adult level. Try the speech approach, as I call it. Write out a sort of outline about the things that make UGA better than Mercer. Explain to her way you want to go there and why it's a better choice overall. It might help out a bit. Worse come to worse, she just says go to Mercer again, lol. But I support you all the way. Go to UGA.
Justin
As big an Auburn fan as I am, I think you should go with UGA. It's a great school. -Justin

There may be many reasons why your parents would like for you to go to Mercer. The best way to convince your parents, and yourself, may be to ease their minds about their concerns. Lots of bad things happen at college. And it is not uncommon for people, even bright clever people, to stuff up. Its a very distracting place; spiritually, emotionally and academically. You may think you're a big girl, but college is a bigger place. Maybe your parents just don't want to lose you. Just something to think about. :D
