:)Very seldom do I call for help in situations like this but I feel my back is to the wall here and the more I look at these things the more uncertain I become.

Most of you know that I currently, stepped down from my job position to pursue my studies. Lately though I've been slowly swaying from my intended major. Originally when I was little my fascination was with computers, though lately I've taken great interest in the area of film.

Now as I look through what colleges I would like to attend and apply for the question comes up what should, I study? Should I go with my heart and pursue a career in film or should I immense myself in the world of computers.

Looking at my choices, I realize that computer science is more of a hobby for me then a desired profession. I really don't want to be glued to a computer as a career. It would turn my hobby into something that I would no longer enjoy. For some reason I no longer can see myself as a top computer nerd.

Recently my friend Joe and I have been trading back and forth ideas on our scripts and movie ideas. Both of us have really taken great interest in this and have found that both of us are actually pretty damn good at film ideas.

So what do you think Otaku-ites? Should I dare to dream a bit larger and pursue film. Or take the normal average boring computer studies that would me a lifeless ordinary job such as the one I left?

Yeah thanks, just make my future life look like a boring and useless one...

Meh.
Anyway, go for films.
If it doesn't work you can fall back on computers. If you have the knowledge you will still have it in five to ten years where you can do late entry for uni and do the computer courses and become "some boring admin sitting in an office somewhere".
Though you will have at least know that you have tried.

My dodgy advice. :D

Why can't you just combine the two? Many places make use of digital cameras, and many places use computers for video editing and production, as well as audio. I'm sure you're familiar with at least some of this already.

At my school we've made use of Media 100, After Effects, Premiere and so on... As well as Pro Tools and various other sound equipment. We had to create our own films, digitize them and edit them and everything else... this was just at a small computer place.

I'm sure you could find a school that combines them and lets you get both sides rather easily. It's certainly what I'd recommend you at least look into a little further.

Its really up to you. Try and combine them. If you ReAlLy are interested in movies then make that your career, and keep computers as your hobby.

Personally I think you've already answered the question for yourself. You said yourself it was only a hobby. So I'd say go with movies.

Although how long have your been interested in films. Because that would suck if it also turned out to be a hobby.

Ack sorry pessimist. Look don't be afraid to take the step. Go ahead! You never know till you're there!

(If I didn't make sense sorry, didn't go to sleep. Up all night. Stupid Micah....)

You have my support for film! I hope you get accepted wherever you apply(Brooks, right?)!@

computer sciences you can sort of fall back on during your spare time, I think you should definately choose film

I hope you post some scripts or something! That'd be really cool to see what you're working on.

well, i say go with film. it would be harder to sucsede(sp?) in, but the reward is much bigger. also, you can't just pick up a film career like you could a computer one. go with film, you would be good at it. but hey, what do i know, i'm only 14.

I say film, and keep your computer fun on the side, to make extra money. It is also possible that you would become a very well known writer/director/ whatever it is in the film industry that you wish to study. There are to many computer jobs out there anyway. People always need a good movie now and then.

I don't know much about the computer careers, but I sure do know that film school is hell. I'm just glad that I'm a photography major and not a film major :drunk: However, I'm sure that if it's something that you really want to do then you'll be willing to go through the tribulations of film school. Good luck with the decision.

Well I'm officially scared now, thanks Jenna...I guess. :bluesweat.

Well I'm fairly confident that I can achieve the goals I have set forth for myself. The path of a film major is not easy, as I've heard from various friends including some I use to go to high school with. But like with most things in life you have to take it in stride and do the best job possible which is something I look forward to trying to do.

Thanks everyone for your support and for those who meantioned double major that almost is impossible to have in the schools I've been looking into. The only school that currently on my list that allows double majors is NYU and I'm not really planning on going to that school.

I suppose it depends on the costs.. but you could always do what I'm hoping to do.. which is to finish my science degree and then go into music..

the advantages of that are that if I'm just not cut out to do music at degree level, then I've still got a physics and biochem degree.

the disadvantage, though, is that it'll cost a fair amount.. (the first degree isn't too bad over here cos most of the fees are covered by the local council)
