The Wind Waker vs GTA: Vice City?

If you've been keeping up on the news, you'll probably have read that The Wind Waker has currently hit 560,000 preorders in the United States.

Apparently, the number of preorders at Electronics Boutique is the largest ever for that retail outlet. In fact, EB has said that The Wind Waker currently has more preorders than GTA: Vice City, which surprised me greatly.

So, who has actually preordered the game? It's only coming out in a couple of weeks in the USA...so maybe we can create an impressions thread for people to read. Australia won't be getting TWW until May (I hope they add some further fixes from the US version, although the US version fixed a few Japanese issues which is good), so I'd love to read what everyone thinks of it. ^_^

Oh yeah, I know how you feel. I mean, I'm still waiting for Metroid Prime to arrive! It comes out here in early April.

Nintendo Australia REALLY dropped the ball on MP. I mean, with TWW...the delay between the United States and Australia is only a couple of months. Probably less, because it will launch near the start of the month.

And that's okay; most Australian gamers can tolerate that.

But Metroid Prime...it came out in the United States at the end of last year. And here we are, waiting until April for it. There's really no excuse; the translation was in place and everything...blah.

Oh well. MP will tide me over until Zelda. So in a way, I'm glad MP hasn't come out 'till now -- I don't have the cash for too many games these days. lol

The more I read about TWW though, the more I want it. For example, the US version (and all other versions by inference) have some MAJOR fixes in terms of certain puzzles that were a bit repetitive. It's fantastic that Nintendo is paying that much attention -- if they'd just left it alone, it'd still be a great game...but that would be really lazy on Nintendo's part.

It's also a shame that University takes up so much of my time. Without Uni, I'd have had The Wind Waker skin done by now. But I guess this gives me more time to plan it out. Who knows; we might be able to get it up just as the game releases in the USA! ^_^

Heh, I've preordered the game at two stores: Gamestop and EB. Gamestop ran out of bonus discs, but is more consistent with releasing games on time. EB on the other hand, had bonus discs, but had so few left that I had to preorder to get one. Now I can just keep the preorder for whatever store gets it first. I'm set.

The combination of the demo I've played and the really cool movie on the bonus disc with the rearranged Zelda theme have left me pretty darn eager to play.

Hopefully I'll actually finish Zelda. I have a habit of getting new games and not finishing them, now. I'm still only two hours into Dark Cloud 2 and I've had it for a couple weeks. Heh.

Anyway, I'm not too surprised the game is rivaling GTA in sales. Someone at Gamestop told me that every third customer reserves Zelda. I guess people have seen the positive side of the new look, after all. I'm excited about the secondary characters, myself.

If I know anything about the news, Zelda has record-breaking pre-orders. It doesn't matter what system people own; Zelda is respected among all deemable gamers. I pre-ordered it myself, and I must say that I have no doubts that Mr. Miyamoto has created yet another Zelda masterpiece. If it rivals Vice City, that sure says a lot about Zelda.

I can't wait, but I suppose I'll have to.

It makes sense for Wind Waker, when you actually think about it. There are two series for each incarnation of Nintendo systems that make it what it is: Mario (grrr) and the Legend of Zelda.

Considering I bought my system in complete anticipation of this game, what do you think? ;)

I pre-ordered my copy of The Wind Waker back in mid-December, heh. Gotta love GameStop for starting them early. :D

I finally got to play the demo a couple days ago, but only for about two minutes. I got to fight a couple enemies and open a locked door, and that was it. Still, I thought they did the combat good. Both enemies would actually attack at the same time, unlike OOT, where you'd be fighting two Stalfos at once, but only one would actually attack at a time. I also like how they did the Spin Attack. Instead of the energy ring staying there for about a full second, it only stays there for as long as it takes to spin around. I can cheap some of the enemies in OOT so bad because the energy ring stays there for so long (especially Stalfos), it isn't even funny. You just do constant Spin Attacks, so that if the Stalfos lower their shields to attack, they immediately get hit, no matter what. So, I'm glad they fixed that.

Also, the animation seemed so much better when I actually got to see it in person, instead of just watching a movie of it. Especially the bats in the dungeon, and the enemies.

It's so interesting how people are now embracing the new design.

Remember when Nintendo first revealed TWW and everyone in America was like "Ugh!"?

It's the complete reverse now. And I think it's great -- people are starting to understand why the style was chosen and how integral it is to the entire game.

The updated battle system is one of the best bits. There's one part where you
come across an enemy who is wearing a metal vest to protect himself. If you hit him, you won't do much damage. But, as he goes to swing at you, you press B (at the right time -- when it goes spikey on the screen) and Link flips over the creature's head and lands behind him. Then, you press B again at the right time to split open his armor at the back -- thus revealing his soft bits. (That sounded kind of weird...but anyway).
These timed battle elements will be a very interesting addition, I'm sure.

I'm also glad that in Australia, we don't have to preorder to get the bonus disc. Preordering is usually painless, but it's nice to know that there won't be a shortage of Master Quest.

I pre-ordered the game for me and a friend a few weeks back. I actually should have paid for them seperately, though, since now I have one receipt and you have to turn that in when you get the game. v_v

Anyway, I had a feeling that Wind Waker would break record sales on this one. First of all, the pre-order disks are selling like hotcakes, and it's very hard to get one. I found out my local walmart had 5, so I told them to hold two, and by the time I got down there a few hours later, mine were the only ones left. I think people are really excited about both Wind Waker and getting a free game or two with it, and practically everyone that owns a GC are getting it. I was even thinking about getting it when I didn't have a GameCube. o_O Call me strange, but I thought that if I didn't get that disk then, I would never have the opertunity when I finally did get a GC. Otherwise, I probably could have sold it for a profit. ^_^

Rivaling with Vice City though...I had never thought about it before. Vice City sold an amazing amount of copies, but now that I think about it, Wind Waker could easily rival that. I also find it great how many people aparently changed their minds about the look, seeing that the gameplay will prevail in the end, and that the look looks pretty tight anyway.

 • 3 weeks later...
We pre-ordered it back in February or January, so we were OK. The bonus disk kept us busy until TWW came out in March.

I'm not that far on the game, but it's great! lol I was one of those people who said "Ugh!" when I first saw the graphics, but I really like it! ^____^ The style is so catchy.

I hope that Mr. Miyamoto has some more ideas for some new Zelda games. They seem to be getting better.

The look on your face when you first saw the Wind Waker! Priceless! But yeah it was kind of shocking at first to see a cel shaded Link. I didn't like the style either when I first saw it, but once you get over the shock of the new style you get to realize how great it really is. The game flows together smoothly and it has a good storyline.

Tricool didn't see my face when I first saw the graphics, I was standing behind him (hehe). Thoughts raced through my mind, 'What on earth happened?', 'He calls this awesome?!?' But they quickly diminished when I started playing, the style is very catchy and I loved it! Soon I was trapped. They could've done better with the people speaking instead of making grunt and say Oy for entire sentences and paragraphs I think (I started making up voices, the grandmother my specialty ^_^ Tricool knows what I mean) I can't wait till I can go back over to his house and play it again....(yes sadly I don't have a gamecube or playstations) but I loved it!

Um, if you want to just talk about the game, there's already a thread for that. This thread has to do with the pre-orders in the US (and about how TWW got more than GTA: Vice City, specifically), which are over now. So, I don't think this thread has much purpose anymore...
