Global Alert Over Hong Kong 'Super Flu'

HEALTH chiefs have issued a global warning about a potentially lethal strain of flu that has swept through hospitals in two countries.

One man has died, while dozens of hospital workers remain critically ill with what has been dubbed 'super flu'.

The initial symptoms of the disease include flu-like illness, with rapid onset of high fever followed by muscle aches, headache and sore throat.

In some cases this has led to double pneumonia, with some patients needing help from a ventilator to stay alive.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says the origin of the infection is still unknown, but the key case involved an American businessman who died on Thursday morning in a Hong Kong hospital.

He had travelled on business from Shanghai to Hanoi, Vietnam, and having felt unwell during his journey he was admitted to a hospital on arrival. He was then transferred to Hong Kong for specialist treatment.

More than 20 hospital staff then became sick with similar symptoms.

World Health Organisation experts are concerned that the man may have passed the infection on to many others on the way.

It has issued a global alert, warning public health surveillance teams throughout the world to be vigilant for outbreaks.

The WHO also recommends that any suspect cases be isolated and reported to authorities.
As if catching a cold wasn't scary enough >.>

Oh..my..God...
These are the things that you don't expect to happen in real life. I mean, an unknown disease that's highly contagious?
This has left me disturbed, to say the least. While still highly unlikely, we could face a new smallpox, or (dare I say) Black Death! And don't tell me that I'm exagerating, because both of those examples started small too...

Obviously it is either a mutated form of some strand of flu, it is something completely new, or they have yet to identify it. It's really hard to believe such a thing happening, but I know it is true.

I just hope this flu or whatever it is doesn't become an outbreak. Because it seems it sure has the potential. Let's just hope it gets contained. I do not want to see something in line as to what the world wide outbreak of Smallpox was like.

kinda reminds me of that movie "outbreak" where people just coughed themselves to death. This flu only adds to the list of problems people already have nowadays...

So I only have one thing to say to those sitting at home with a what seems like benign fever, live it up while you can.

Why? It happens all the time. There was a real bad one in Europe during 1917 that originated in Kansas (somehow carried over there). here's a link :Link Sure that was almost a century ago, but there has yet to be a cure of a flew and with more and more use of medication, viri will mutate and become stronger.

lol. Great. A super flu. Big woop, how is Mr. Hussein doing? =)
Dude, Mr. Hussein is the same as he has been the last ten years that America has been ignoring him. GET OVER IT.

As for this, these out breaks happen all the time. Though it's odd to get a world wide warning. Hope it doesn't make its way to Australia.

It's most likely one of the new "Super Bugs" that have adapted to our medical technology. Bugger hay?

Eps ? *Runs away from the flu?*

Well I'm not really that shocked by the story, I've heard of various strainds of the flu that are equally as deadly. Though luckily most of the time we never seen them get to the US.

The most recent rare strain of flu was going around in cruise lines and acted more like a stomach Flue then anything.

Also for who ever meantioned The Stand kudo's, that brings back some old memories.

I think the high concentration of sheep will keep it away...
...Sorry couldn't hold back. :P

Does any one know if the guy was told that the infection he had was lethal. Like think of it, you?re travelling to a different country and you pick up a bug then a few days later you?re dead. That?s harsh.
I know there are tons of risks but you don?t count picking up a mystery bug and spreading it then dieing as one of those...

Eps ? Still running from the flu?

Postbagboy, please put more effort into your posts.

And Harry, I was not notioning of some outbreak way back in 1917. I was just saying that in my lifetime, there has not been an outbreak as bad as Smallpox or anything as such. I know things like this happen, but when you first hear it, it is somewhat surprising. I just do not want another outbreak as bad as Smallpox.

Ah, and I see Lady Mac bought up The Stand. Wonderful book. One of my favorites of Stephen King.

I'm sure as a fascist and antiamerican heretic i've been brainwashed, hm? You should learn more about the people you try to stereotype. lol. I'm glad comedy has died to the point that idle comments become a new basis for debate amongst hotheaded, opinonated people from different nations. *kicks the world into a trashcan and walks to a pizzaplace*

Anyway, back to the topic..

Another one... 12 Monkeys... one of my favorite movies ever.

I have this strange opinion about disasters... you know, earthquakes, diseases, wars, riots... I get a big kick out of them. Maybe the flu will spread, lol, thought I seriously doubt it. But I get kind of excited when bad stuff happens on a massive scale, don't ask me why.

Maybe I'm just a weirdo. I can't stand the mundane.

The rules here clearly state that one-word posts are not considered posts with much effort put into them ;)

I hadn't read this topic until now when I think I have caught my first ever case of the flu. Even though I doubt I'm afflicted by this killer 'super flu', it's not very comforting to know that it's around :(

Same here, although our security is pretty tight. i.e Screening everyone from the infected areas for the virus before they come on to our shore, But we don't know how good other countries security is, so we might let someone in from a country deemed safe, who has actually got the flu from a passenger of an asian flight. I guess the best solution I can think of is pray, and run to the mountains and survive off the land for 10 years or so, until it goes away
