Mommy Dearest

Has anyone seen the movie Mommy Dearest? It's a pretty old movie, but still very good.

For those of you who've never seen it...

It's the story of the beloved actress Joan Crawford (ask your grandparents). She was loved by millions, had hit movie after hit movie, won numerous awards, helped found the Pepsi Cola company, and even adopted two children who she raised as her own.

What the movie uncovers is how unstable Joan was, and how abusive she was to her children, Christina and Christopher. Rather than call her "Mother" or simply "Mommy", the children had to call her "Mommy Dearest" at all times. Christopher (Chris) tossed and turned too much in bed, so she had him strapped to his bed at night. Christina (Tina) had hung a $400 dress on a wire hanger (wire hangers tend to leave marks and stains on thin fabrics and lightly colored clothing), and Joan beat her with the hanger, and later enrolled her in a boarding school for her overly-smug attitude.

It's a very interesting movie, for a look back on Hollywood actresses before tabloids had snapshots and footage of them on the toilet. It's interesting to see a woman suddenly snap and scream "No wire hangers, ever" at a little girl, out of the blue.
