Where are all the good books?

Okay, for all you avid book readers I'm sure you've heard of the banned book list. Well I've heard of some famous books like Matilda, The Chocolate War, Goosebumps (yes the very funny scary story series), Little House on the Prarie, all of Shel Silverstien's poetry books, and even Harry Potter. These books have been banned for various reasons from libraries, the reason for Little House on the Prarie was banned was because of the way they spoke about Native Americans, believe me, I've read these books and they never once insulted the Native Americans. My point on this thread is, why do these people do this to Public libraries? If they don't want their kid to read it then fine, keep them sheltered, but don't ruin it for other kids who want to experience the joy of reading cool books. My main question is, do these people have nothing to do with their lives other than ban really great books or do they just do this so they can "protect" the youth?

I'd say it's a bit of both. Some people like pushing their beliefs and agendas onto everyone else... And because they somehow manage to get backing from more people like them, they wind up making a loud of enough noise to get things changed. I think a lot what happens is usually a result of the libraries and such just not wanting to have to deal with these people.

I don't know a lot about library fundings and such... But apparently a lot around here have a hard enough time getting books as it is. I'm sure they don't want to deal with moronic protests and complaints on top of it. So I guess all that freedom of speech stuff just gets overridden for the time being.

We have a massive library downtown that is several stories high... I've never had a hard time finding anything there. They even have Satanic-centered stuff that almost all other libraries won't carry... plus the Necronomicon, etc. Obviously, all the other books you mentioned are all kept there as well.

So I've never really had to deal with missing out on a book if I needed or wanted it, personally.

Welcome to Australia my friend. We probably didn't have most of those books in the first place. I recognise a few of them that we've gotten away with, but trust me...Australian libraries are boring. I have to custom order everything from the vault that never gets opened at the library in our capital city...Normally takes six months to arrive. Pain in the ***.

Well, the town i go to school in has a lot of the above mentioned books but another town has banned several books. I agree Semjaza, its those types of people who like to force their beliefs onto other people and get backing from people like them and they get the really good books banned. Can you believe people actually banned Goosebumps? That was a funny series. I mean yes it was supposed to be a horror series but it wasn't, it was just funny as heck.

Out of all those books, I've only read The Chocolate War. (against my will, stupid English teacher) I can see why thats banned, made to look like a little kids book but filled with things like masturbation refrences, I was pretty weirded out. I always knew my teacher was a perve. So what, certain books get banned. Its not like their impossible to find, if you want to read them, you'll find them somewhere. Dont go to the Library and go to bookstores.

Well, there are always better books than those you mentioned. But I think you're right, Domon. In "The Little House on the Prarie", I think there wasn't anything bad. But, I recall a part when Laura wanted to have an Native American baby or something, and the mother acted as she didn't like Native Americans. Maybe that's something they can hold against the author, but the author based the books off of a diary the real Laura Ingells wrote.
