Yu Yu Hakusho!
Originally posted by Transtic Nerve Anyway, I saw enough of Chicago to know it didn't deserve best picture. It looked horrible. Broadway needs to stay out of cinema and stick to trying to win Tony's not Oscars. Leave that to the pros who can act, and not just dance and sing. I didn't see the Pianist. The title reminded me of that movie a few years ago that was just beyond crap, so much i didn't want to see this one. Gangs of New York was a great film. Although exagerated, it was still semi-truthful. I would have liked to see that or LOTR win, but whatever. Oscars don't mean anything anymore because it's quite obvious they give them to people who don't deserve them at all. After watching last year's Oscars, I knew there was no more hope. Halley Berry was an excellent choice for best actress, Monster's Ball was an incredible, moving, and emotion picture, but Denzel Washington?... he deserved a kick in the a$s after that crappy performance in a CRAPPY movie. After he won, I knew they did it only to appease Jesse Jackson and everyone else who was complaining about African Americans not winning. So you know they are swayed, easily might I add, by a persuasion in public opinion.
Everyone here needs to read TN's opinion about Chicago. I totally agree with you on that...and I was thinking, why the hell did they get so many damn awards? -------------- And on top of that, you are right about the African American issue. Liberals (or just plain anybody) are just sucking up to them so they won't start complaining that we're being 'racist' because we didn't give them all the awards. The way Halley Berry looks, I never even thought she was black anyway. She's s good actress, period. There ARE movies with African Americans in them that are good, but most of them, in my opinion, like all these 'Drumline' (not just Drumline, a number of movies) movies and stuff like that are bad movies with bad actors. And that doesn't go for just black people. That goes for everyone. C'mon people, stop being so damn politically correct! It's getting old!
James
I think Denzel Washington really deserved to win best actor -- but not for that movie. He's done so many great movies, like The Bone Collector for example. Why not win for that? I think he's been passed over way too many times. He's a great, skilled actor. Anyway, I watched very little of this year's awards. Michael Moore, while often quite interesting (though he's an unashamed liberal, some of his points are quite interesting -- particularly the guns and America issue), has no right to get on a political soapbox at the Oscars. It's rude, unprofessional and irrelevant. Anyway, did anyone notice all the frontend stuff in the Oscars? Like that history of cinema thing and the way the circles turned into different objects? Kinda like a menu graphics type thing. Well, the guy who created all of that gave a talk at an international design conference in my city, which my school attended. It was really fascinating! He was talking about that and how they did it. He also showed us opening credits that he did for Darkness Falls and a number of other upcoming movies. So yeah, that's sort of unrelated, but his involvement with the Oscars is interesting, because you never really think of all those menu graphic things...but they're often quite interesting. ^_^;

NeoCactuar
The reason LotR didn?t get best director and probably will never get best director is because we are up against Americans directors, and what do Americans love the most, themselves. It is a well know fact the academy rarely gives out best director and movie awards to non-Hollywood movies and non-American directors. It was made even tougher for lotR because we were up against a remake of a classic American Broadway show and an inspirational historic American movie. James
I don't think that theory is necessarily true. Australian actors and directors have never had any real bias against them in terms of competing with Americans. And quite often, you'll be surprised to know just how many American movies have Australian directors and/or cast. It's very interesting. I don't think there was a national bias against New Zealanders. Rather, I think that LotR was just up against some hefty competition. In retrospect, I think that LotR was visually very good...but I really don't think it deserved best picture. It wasn't the strongest movie. But certainly, I think it deserved more consideration -- at least a nomination would have been appropriate.
