Guest The Mage Prince
I want to know just how people got into anime. I got into anime while i was flicking though the t.v at home about 4 years ago and come across eva. The next day at school i looked it up on the net and come across a site that said "EVA, IS IT THE BEST EVER ANIME MADE?" and type in anime into yahoo and the rest is history. Now Cowboy Bebop is the best ever anime, well i think so any way. So people out there tell me how you got into anime? and why you like it today? Guest Hikaru Ichijyo
I started back in 1985 with a show by the name of Macross which most of you guys know better as the first season of Robotech from that point on I collected various animes as a child and continue to do so to this day. That was a time before anime dubs, where fan subs were the only source for new anime shows, and the internet wasn't even available to look up anime info. Those were the days! Manic Webb
Back in 1998, when I had my WebTV, I was thinking of websites to look for, when I remembered two specific shows: Dragonball Z and Sailormoon. I noticed that a couple of websites were calling these cartoons "anime." I did a search for anime, found Anime Web Turnpike, look through their lists of series, and I suddenly had a need to watch anime. Meanwhile, I'd noticed that a local TV station was airing subtitled anime every Sunday night. There was something alluring about anime that I just couldn't resist, and I've been a fan ever since. Ryo the Tamer
Let's see here.... I was just a kid, I watched old episodes of Speed Racer that my Dad's sister owned. Then a few years short passed. I started playing the Pokemon game, then watched the anime. The anime turned me off to the series. Then I saw something called Digimon, thought it was some rip off of Pokemon at the time, but when it's almost completely different. I watched it for a while, then I found an a website about anime, and started watching almost every show on Toonami. Now I have bought the Trigun box set, and I twitch alot during Anime with horrible dubbing(Digimon,DBZ), and I'm still trying to find subbed Digimon Tamers season. Zephyr
One word: Toonami. Yep, I was there since the first day of Toonami and have been there ever since. Thankfully they have not let their audience down and continue to bring in new and interesting anime series.
TheDarkOtaku
6 years ago, before Toonami was popular, younger me was very upset because my best friend moved to another state. I was in the school parking lot one day when a boy from my class mentioned a show by the name of "Tenchi Muyo." I inquired him about it, we talked a lot after that, and became extremely close friends (still to this day). After he showed me the series I was hooked on the wonderful art form known as anime. I'm afraid its affects are irreversible. I'm totally hooked on it. Sad to some, interesting to others, it doesn't matter either way. As long as there is anime, an otaku is what I will stay. So, thats is how I am the fan I am now. I guess coincidences really can turn into something major. (BTW, I know this is off topic, but Endymion your banner is awesome :) )
Angelus
A long time ago I ran into a anime called DBZ. And DBZ was good, until I ran across Tenchi Muyo. The Tenchi Muyo OAV was/is the best out there.
Jinzouningen17
From the thread that was posted months back which can be found at http://www.otakuboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17935 Hmmm, if I'm not mistaken, the first anime that I remember seeing was Voltron. Now THAT was probably one of the hottest animes of the 80's that I had seen as a kid. Now the thing that got me deep into anime was definetly Dragonball Z. When I first saw the Saiya-Jin saga on one of the local channels around here back in like 1996, I got hooked. Ever since then, I've been trying my hardest to get my hands on all types of anime such as Sailor Moon, Akira, Ninja Scroll, and stuff like that. And the first sub-titled anime that I ever seen was Dragonball Z, the Cell games saga. Actually, the first episode I got to see subbed was "Exploding Cell Juniors". I'll never forget when I had ordered it on the net from animenet.org back in 2000 after my 19th birthday. That was the first time I ever got to see what everyone was talking about(with the subs being better than the dubs)and I knew right then that I was hooked. So yeah, Voltron is what got me started in anime, but Dragonball is what got me hooked.
vegeta rocker
I needed an escape and was tired of those stupid zany cartoons. Except ren and stimpy of course. I saw some Ranma 1/2 and got a slight interest in it. But what did it for me was definetly Blood Reign:Curse of the yoma. To me that is the best anime ever. The theme song is still the best some i have ever hear. (yoma kazoe uta) Yoma counting song. It has only been rivaled by green bird from bebop. The anime i understand isn't the greatest out there but it is it for me. That is the first anime i have ever recorded and i will have it buried with me. I have to find the dvd since my vhs copy is too old. Or i can hope action channel will show it again. I am still into anime because it can be damn addictive. Like the bag at planet anime in dallas said, Anime, Crack is cheaper. It may be cheaper, but just as addictive. I love the idea of a whole diffrent world composed of ink and cel images. It just makes me feel that even if this world amounts to nothing, i will always have my anime. Really what else is there?
XxmagentaxX
I started way back.. with a little anime called UNICO. I was so obsessed with it, i would always rent it, then one day it was gone. Anyway, I dug up this little post I had made in that thread:
Originally posted by Syk3 That's a good question, but I remember it like it was yesterday... I think it was 6th grade. Yeah, seems right. My friends started collecting these cards, and when they asked me to join, I told that that I wasn't interested, that I'm not into that kind of stuff. I was wrong. No, it wasn't Pokemon cards (bleh) but Ani-Meyham DBZ cards, and I started collecting them almost immediately for some reason. Of course, now that I started collecting the cards, I wanted to watch the show. Granted, this wasn't the one on Toonami -- there was no Toonami. I started watching it when Radditz first came down, when Space Ghost was hosting it. o_O Anyway, I really got into it, and until about the middle of 9th grade. I finally got over DBZ and started watching other anime like Cowboy Bebop, then lived happily ever after.
After all that, here I am, an Anime moderator. Didn't see that one coming! ;) I own 5 different series on DVD, as well as 3 movies (that are actually based off a few of the series that I own o_O), and I've seen close to 57 different anime series and movies. Not the whole series', mind you, but at least about three episodes -- enough to get the picture.
tabmow
I remember way back in the old days when we used to draw cartoons on rocks and move them around............ well maybe not quite back that far. I guess my first impact with anime really came in the early to mid 80's after Return of the Jedi began to wind down I fell into an entertainment void until I caught 2 episode of this wierd cartoon will big eyes and wierd hair calld Robotech. (Its funny to think of this now because there wasn't that much weird hair or big eyes as in current anime) Well I was hooked after two episodes and then it was taken off the air. I needed to find more Robotech. I found a comic shop that carried the manga and a few toys were produced, but after I got serious about finishing college I kind of let the entertainment thing slip. Working in a bakery from 11 PM to 7 AM and then going to school kind of wears you down. I knew anime was still there, but it was not a prioroty (hangs head in shame)Well , a few years after I started teaching, I was told by my superiors that I was going to start a debate team. Somehow that first year we made it to State competition in Austin. Well on the trip a couple of the students brought a vcr and some giant fighting robot movies. They asked me to watch one , I think it was the third or fourth Eva episode. I didn't have a clue as to what was going on and promptly fell asleep. After we got back from State the same students approached me about starting an Anime club at Our school. I remembered my happy Robotech days and almost said sure, why not.....,but I remembered that not all anime is appropriate onderage children, yes even high school kids ( wouldn't your be ashamed if your mother knew you were watching Perverted Japanese Cartoons >;) ) I asked them just exactly what kind of anime they wanted to show, Their little crestfallen faces realized that I was not completely ignorent about these show (I wonder what they wanted to see Hmm...) Well they suggested Evangelion and Ranma 1/2. I went to the video store and picked up Eva 1, a Ranma tape, plus another tape from the Anime section of the store. I watched Ranma first. It was very funny but with so miuch casual nudity it would not have made the cut as to what we could show in school. Then I put in the tape I had grabbed at random.( I was just a blank box not the package the video originally came in) Lets just say we almost never had an anime club in our school. La Blue Girl I don't thionk would be appropriate and our principal would't have bought it a a cross between cultural studies and sex education. Needless to say I was a little hesitent about watching the last tape, but I finally did. At first I remembered big fighting robots and this was the show that put me to sleep, but.... When I watched it from the beginning I realized there was a story and very indepth charachters and a lot of good cultural and other Ideas could be exchanged. ThE second anime impact had occured. Needly to say we started the club, with definite restriction approved by the principal no excessive violence (Fist of the North Star), no nudity(thats about 30 % of the rest), and no or minimal profanity (This on snuck up on me--Nadesico - probably my Favorite series). I am still going strong on anime--- hey I even post a few things on websites from timto time
Semjaza
Well I had seen Robotech and the countless other shows that were translated for TV here... such as Voltron. My uncle had the entire Robotech series on tape, as well as some Sentinels (not sure of the spelling) and import stuff. I was only like 6 or something though, so I really don't know that it all got me into anime. I have a soft spot for Robotech still. When I was a bit older, but still pretty young I found his Vampire Hunter D tape... I know a lot of people don't consider that a very good anime, but this was still over 10 years ago. I'd never seen a animated anything as violent or as dark as that, and it caught my attention. I still didn't really buy much of the stuff though. I mostly bought manga after this point though... GitS, the entire Appleseed collection, Ranma 1/2, Akira... etc. I started buying anime because of manga though, so I guess that's what got me fully into it. However, despite watching it and liking some of it, and trying to work at http://reviews.theotaku.com I still don't like most anime. In fact, I think the vast majority of it is awful, just like with anything else. Lately, the only anime I've been watching has been Hale Nochi Guu and Naruto... Both of which are fansubbed and available for free for download on the internet. Guu is probably one of my favorite anime series ever.

Anywho, when I was a little kid, I used to watch Thundercats everyday. I don't exactly remember when it started because I was so young. The only thing I can remember is when I was about six or seven years old, waking up in the middle of the night and watching Akira. It was dark in my house and the tv lit everything up in a while glow. I was mesmerized. So yeah... And Evangelion is the best series. I would get up every morning at 6 to watch astro boy, and then I'd watch my VHS of serindipitti... It was grand... After that, I started to watch Sameri Pizza cats on YTV religously. Desiivy
Well, To begin with I hated any and all anime. I recall seeing something I think it was Voltron, as a kid & didn't like it. And simply would not watch anything with the Amine style drawn. I caught Sailor Moon Once it only took once to ensure I wasn't missing out on anything. As a Mother to 4 children, I had come across toonami on cartoon network, but still felt it was not good for the kids to watch. Then My brother came in from out of state, and insisted he got to watch, I said No, He begged me, just give it a chance. So I gave it a shot, Of course it was Dragonballz, which was at the start of the "Other World Tournament" and He was explaining all this stuff to me. I ended up with so many questions, but he had to leave. So that's where the whole thing started, My little (21) brother got me hooked on DBZ. He came back over summer the next year, he teased me for being able to convince me to watch. Thus getting me hooked, I snickered at him when, When the student surpassed the teacher. Mr. High & mighty was knocked off his little pedicel.
Guest Musahi
Like most anime fans around my age I jumped on the bandwagon back when Pokemon got popular. After a while I lost interest in Pokemon, and fell in love with Dragonball Z. I started buying the single manga issues ( the VIZ adaptions ) and I saw ads for other anime. Pretty soon I was trying to get my hands on every anime I possibly could, that faded fast though. Now I just watch Adult Swim and download some fan-subs. *shrugs*
