Mitch
Hm. This idea just instantly popped into my head as I sit here listening to Tool here at school. So I'm going to take my compulsion and try it; see where it goes, and if I can maybe revitalize this forum. It's so dead, and, seeing as I moderate here now, I want it un-dead-ish-ing. So basically, here's the lowdown: You can post your favorite music lyrics here; favorite song lyrics, whatever. Then each of us here evaluates it and shows what it means to us. I want it to be on a more writer-esque nature. I want some good, critical, thought-provoking stances on what these lyrics mean to you. I want you to tell me why these lyrics mean something to you. I want you to tell me if you think it has good flow; if it does this or that. But don't just post short answers. Actually put some thought in here. Please. The reason why I put this here in this forum is because we aren't evaluating the song. But, more or less, we're evaluating the meaning of the lyrics. What makes them work. So, here I go. I'll start with some Tool lyrics. I recently started listening to the band, and I find them very good. Tool-"The Patient" A groan of tedium escapes me, Startling the fearful. Is this a test? It has to be, Otherwise I can't go on. Draining patience, drain vitality. This paranoid, paralyzed vampire act's a little old. But I'm still right here Giving blood, keeping faith And I'm still right here. Wait it out, Gonna wait it out, Be patient (wait it out). If there were no reward to (reap / heal), (No / A) loving embrace to see me through This tedious path I've chosen here, I certainly would've walked away by now. Gonna wait it out. If there were no desire to heal A damaged and broken man along This tedious path I've chosen here I certainly would've walked away by now. And I still may ... [sigh] ... I still may. Be patient. I must keep reminding myself of this. And if there were no rewards to (reap / heal), (No / A) loving embrace to see me through This tedious path I've chosen here, I certainly would've walked away by now. And I still may. Gonna wait it out. Look over this song; find what you can from it. It's a pretty simple song, and the understanding isn't too deep. But I decided to start with something simple first. Then take it from there.
Shy
Originally posted by Mitch A groan of tedium escapes me, Startling the fearful. Is this a test? "Is this a test? It has to be / Otherwise I can't go on," are the sort of lyrics that everyone can relate to at one point or another. One day the test of life will be over, and either we pass or we fail.
But I'm still right here Giving blood, keeping faith And I'm still right here.
So it seems like this person isn't willing to give up on themselves, or on their life. That's sort of inspirational, isn't it? It is sort of odd to have such a life-affirming statement in the second verse, hm...
Wait it out, Gonna wait it out, Be patient (wait it out).
Heh, this is my philosophy on life. Time heals all wounds.
If there were no reward to (reap / heal), (No / A) loving embrace to see me through This tedious path I've chosen here, I certainly would've walked away by now. Gonna wait it out.
Okay, I see where this song is headed. It's about having someone you love help you through all of the problems. And I guess it seems like we all would never had made it this far along in life it weren't for our friends.
If there were no desire to heal A damaged and broken man along This tedious path I've chosen here I certainly would've walked away by now.
Basically a repetition of the first statement. We give up on ourselves sometimes, but there are people who willnever give up on us.
I'm still looking for the rewards to reap/heal, but I continue to talk on the path. Of course, it seems like I could walk away at any given moment. But the song ends on a somewhat positive note, which is a good thing. The lyrics have a lot of meaning for me, and I'm sure they have a lot of meaning for you, Mitch. Hopefully some other people will try this out. There are some lyrics which I would like to post later... Circ
Dispatch - The General A friend of mine had me listening at the song and now I'm totally addicted to it. There was a decorated General with a heart of gold That likened him to all the stories he told, Of past battles won and lost And legends of old A seasoned veteran in his own time On the battlefield he gained respectful fame With many medals of bravery and stripes to his name He grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face And always urged his men on But on the eve of great battle with the infantry in dream The Old General tossed in his sleep and wrestled with its meaning He awoke from the night to tell what he had seen And walked slowly out of his tent All the men held tall with their chests in the air With courage in their blood and a fire in their stare It was a gray morning and they were all wondering how they would fare Till the old general told them to go home He said: I have seen the others And I have discovered That this fight is not worth fighting And I have seen their mothers And I will no other, to follow me where I'm going So Take a shower, shine your shoes You got no time to lose You are young men, you must be living so Take a shower, shine your shoes You got no time to lose You are young men, you must be living Go now you are forgiven But the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders Not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders The General said he would do his own duty but he would extend it no further The men can go as they please Not a man moved their eyes gazed straight ahead, Till one by one they stepped back and not a word was said And the old general was left with his own words echoing in his head He then prepared to fight He said: I have seen the others And I have discovered That this fight is not worth fighting No, and I see their mothers and I will no other to follow me where I'm going So Take a shower shine your shoes You got no time to lose You are young men you must be living So Take a shower shine your shoes You got no time to lose You are young men you must be living Go now you are forgiven. Semjaza
This can become a really great thread... especially if people post songs that actually mean something to them. They do this at GAF every so often, but it's just copy and paste crap... no real discussion. I hope that stops in this thread because I already have a vested interest in it. David Bowie - Conversation Piece I took this walk to ease my mind To find out what's gnawing at me Wouldn't think to look at me That I've spent a lot of time in education It all seems so long ago I'm a thinker, not a talker I've noone to talk to anyway I can't see the road For the rain in my eyes I live above the grocer's store, Owned by an Austrian He often calls me down to eat And he jokes about his broken English Tries to be a friend to me But for all my years of reading conversation I stand without a word to say I can't see the bridge For the rain in my eyes And the world is full of life Full of folk who don't know me And they walk in twos or threes or more While the light that shines above the grocer's store Investigates my face so rudely And my essays lying scattered on the floor Fulfill their needs just by being there And my hands shake My head hurts my voice sticks inside my throat I'm invisible and dumb And no one will recall me And I can't see the water Through the tears in my eyes ----------------------------------- I don't know what anyone else gets out of this song. I really don't know how much it can really convey via the lyrics alone, but as a song... It's incredible. Very deep, very sad, very beautiful. One of my favorite things about Bowie is how almost every one of his songs tells a story of sorts. He's never just saying things to say them or because they sound good. I always just figured this song was more or less about a loner. A person who keeps to himself, doesn't let anyone be his real friend, doesn't engage in any real interaction with anyone. After all this time I think it's having his toll on him and he is wasting away in a sense. If anyone else has any thoughts on it, that'd be nice. Mimmsicle
And I think you left a part out.
I found the lyrics on a site, so there might be parts missing :) The David Bowie song was awesome ! I've never really experienced any of his work, but I think I might have to now.
I took this walk to ease my mind To find out what's gnawing at me Wouldn't think to look at me That I've spent a lot of time in education It all seems so long ago
the lyrics are like a film played before your mind, he's talking to no one but it feels like he's inviting you along his walk and wants someone to know him.
And my hands shake My head hurts my voice sticks inside my throat I'm invisible and dumb And no one will recall me
sure it's killing him to think about how things are and maybe this has been his way in the world for so long that he is unable to turn things around... and I might be wrong, but I don't get the feeling that he'd like things to be different for some reason:
"He often calls me down to eat... Tries to be a friend to me"
and still he says:
"I'm a thinker, not a talker I've noone to talk to anyway"
and there's this line:
"And the world is full of life Full of folk who don't know me And they walk in twos or threes or more"
it's close to impossible to approach people, since they've already got someone to "walk with"... so why even try ? hope I explained myself somewhat understandable.... - Mimmi
Semjaza
I agree with your idea of him not wanting to be like that as well. It becomes rather obvious a bit later in the song. I've posted this a million times elsewhere, Deadsy - The Winners Let's take the longest way through the hallways of your mind. Upon your knees, the phantom breeze of a shipwreck lost in time. Your envy mirror, the kelly fear adorns the walls in slime. Figure it out, just like you used to. In the absense of proud, that's when you're cursed to prove. And as the perfect wings'll glide, cleansed are men of all the mice. Past the pain, we tend to strive, or that's how it seems to beginners. Accept awards throughout our lives, to make young lovers intertwine. Perhaps the end'll come tonight, so hooray for the Winners. A vast abyss, where lie dismissed ideas of yours and mine. But brought to kneel by the Grecian Seal, we join the family line. You'll never thrill the bold divisions in the sky, of whom predestined you to always be the last in line. Accept awards throughout our lives To make young lovers intertwine Perhaps the end will come tonight Past the pain we tend to strive Because the Winner's young and bright. Let the heavens make it right. A warm and gentle breeze at night. Bereft, you are of plans to gain no misery, you're no surprise we're born to fight, suck the marrow of life The Winners forever preside. ------------------------------ There are quite a few things in this song I simply don't understand. Mostly references the song makes to thinks I'm unfamiliar with. I still have no idea what the kelly fear is. My basic idea is that this is about the people who succeed in many things in life versus those who don't. I also get the impression it doesn't matter if you succeed at these things because you'll always be important somewhere else along the line. Who knows for sure though... great song either way. Mitch
Let's take the longest way through the hallways of your mind. Upon your knees, the phantom breeze of a shipwreck lost in time. Your envy mirror, the kelly fear adorns the walls in slime.
The Kelly Fear? Well,I'm guessing Kelly may be a name of a girl? So the fear of a girl? Envy mirror...something you want to be like? Wanting to be like a girl...that doesn't make sense, though. It starts off asking, "Well, let's take a walk in your mind. See what we find." It says you find something that's old--"a shipwreck lost in time"--meaning it's been there a long, long time.
Figure it out, just like you used to. In the absense of proud, that's when you're cursed to prove.
Reexamination, baby; going over something again, look at it as fresh again. That's what the first line says. In the absence of the proud...hm. In the absence of those who see your achievments. Those that see all you've done. Without their enthusiasm and help, that's when you're shown to prove what you really are.
And as the perfect wings'll glide, cleansed are men of all the mice. Past the pain, we tend to strive, or that's how it seems to beginners. Accept awards throughout our lives, to make young lovers intertwine. Perhaps the end'll come tonight, so hooray for the Winners.
Perfect people will excel, and they'll shower out all the "mice"--the weaker, not as good people. The song then goes to say that these people are something of beginners. They don't know the true pain of being swept down by people that are better. And past this pain, they have a chance to strive. The accepting awards to make young lovers intertwine line doesn't make perfect sense to me though. It goes to say perhaps they'll die tonight. Is it saying that these are the winners? The ones that die? That's what I see.
A vast abyss, where lie dismissed ideas of yours and mine. But brought to kneel by the Grecian Seal, we join the family line.
Don't know what a "Grecian Seal" is. I looked it up. It's a greek seal? What the hell? It doesn't make sense to me. The first line makes perfect sense...it says that people far too often don't think for themselves. And they...look to the past and follow others. Perhaps that's what the second line is saying.
Figure it out, just like you used to. In the absense of proud, that's when you're cursed to prove And as the perfect wings'll glide, cleansed are men of all the mice. Past the pain, we tend to strive, or that's how it seems to beginners. Accept awards throughout our lives, to make young lovers intertwine. Perhaps the end'll come tonight, so hooray for the Winners.
Already explained.
You'll never thrill the bold divisions in the sky, of whom predestined you to always be the last in line.
Simply, you'll never be better than you were made to be, by God, this says.
"Suck the marrow of life." Thoreau's words changed a bit--a transcendentalist that once wrote one must "suck all the marrow out of life." The last part basically says The Winners are the young people, I suppose. It says they are nothing special. They'll end up fighting the perfect people and better people. And they'll continue to do so. Time for some lyrics from me. I'll just do a random Radiohead song.. Radiohead- My Iron Lung Faith.. you?re driving me away You do it everyday You don?t mean it but it hurts like hell. My brain.. says I?m recieving pain A lack of oxygen from my life support My iron lung. We?re.. too young to fall asleep Too cynical to speak We are loosing it, can?t you tell? We scratch.. our eternal itch Out 20th century bitch And we are grateful of our Iron lung. Suck.. suck your teenage thumb Toilet trained and dumb When the power runs out, we?ll just hum. This.. is our new song Just like the last one A total waste of time. My iron lung (the headshrinkers they want everything) (my uncle bill, my belisha beacon) And if you?re frightened, you can be frightened You can be x ok!! Anf if you?re frightened, you can be frightened You can be x-ok!! (the headshrinkers they want everything) (my uncle bill, my belisha beacon) The song was written about "Creep." It can obviously be seen in these lines in particular...
Suck.. suck your teenage thumb Toilet trained and dumb When the power runs out, we?ll just hum. This.. is our new song Just like the last one A total waste of time. My iron lung
I also take its meaning in religion as well. An iron lung. Radiohead-Lucky I'm on a roll I'm on a roll This time I feel my luck could change. Kill my Sarah Kill me again With love. It's gonna be a glorius day. Pull me out of your crash Pull me out of the wake Because I'm your super hero We are standing on the edge. The head of state Has called for me by name. And I don't have Time for him. It's gonna be a glorius day. I feel my luck could change. Pull me out of your crash. Pull me out of the wake. Because I'm your superhero. We are standing on the edge. We are standing on the edge. I can't even begin to explain how amazing this song is. Thom Yorke is just amazing. This whole song just goes beyond words...the way he sings it. If you haven't heard it, hear it. These lyrics sound stale as to how the song sounds with his voice. The song is about his girlfriend, Sarah. It talks about how he feels he's too lucky to have her--
I'm on a roll I'm on a roll This time I feel my luck could change
He then goes to say he saves Sarah from things, he's her "superhero." And he asks her to kill him again with love. It's a simple song...but so amazing.

Mitch
Bob Dylan-Idiot Wind Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out but when they will I can only guess. People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts. Even you, yesterday you had to ask me where it was at, I couldn't believe after all these years, you didn't know me better than that Sweet lady. Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth, Blowing down the backroads headin' south. Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth, You're an idiot, babe. It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe. I ran into the fortune-teller, who said beware of lightning that might strike I haven't known peace and quiet for so long I can't remember what it's like. There's a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pourin' out of a boxcar door, You didn't know it, you didn't think it could be done, in the final end he won the wars After losin' every battle. I woke up on the roadside, daydreamin' 'bout the way things sometimes are Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are makin' me see stars. You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies. One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzin' around your eyes, Blood on your saddle. Idiot wind, blowing through the flowers on your tomb, Blowing through the curtains in your room. Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth, You're an idiot, babe. It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe. It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my heart. Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped, What's good is bad, what's bad is good, you'll find out when you reach the top You're on the bottom. I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed, your eyes don't look into mine. The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone-faced while the building burned. I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees, while the springtime turned Slowly into autumn. Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull, From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol. Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth, You're an idiot, babe. It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe. I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishin' I was somebody else instead. Down the highway, down the tracks, down the road to ecstasy, I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory And all your ragin' glory. I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free, I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me. You'll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above, And I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love, And it makes me feel so sorry. Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats, Blowing through the letters that we wrote. Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves, We're idiots, babe. It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves. Amazing song.
Heaven's Cloud
Although it probably goes against some type of personal value that I have (the one that states songs should be appreciated in their entirety) I thought this would be fun to try? Radiohead- My Iron Lung
Faith.. you?re driving me away You do it everyday You don?t mean it but it hurts like hell.
This brief statement could signify how the personification of ?Faith? (and how it is recognized as more of an entity than a philosophy) is utilized as a crutch or ?iron lung? by society thereby is distorting its original intentions and pushing him (the artist) from its idealistic qualities. Hell could be interpreted as not only a mental state, but an actual place that his lack of Faith may lead him to.
My brain.. says I?m recieving pain A lack of oxygen from my life support My iron lung.
Again referring to his Faith, the singer realizes that he has depended on it for so long that his loss is eating him up?
We?re.. too young to fall asleep Too cynical to speak We are loosing it, can?t you tell? We scratch.. our eternal itch Out 20th century bitch And we are grateful of our Iron lung.
The artist is possibly pointing out the conflict in human nature today. While we give the outward appearance of cynical, tough independents, we all have and need an ?iron lung?, a crutch that helps us (whether it be faith, politics, ect?)
Suck.. suck your teenage thumb Toilet trained and dumb When the power runs out, we?ll just hum. This.. is our new song Just like the last one A total waste of time. My iron lung
The artist is possibly spitefully, sarcastically protesting his ?iron lung? and dependency for/on it hoping that he (along with society) can break from it.
(the headshrinkers they want everything)
Stupid psychiatrists, analyze everything?not at all like this post. No sir!
(my uncle bill, my belisha beacon) And if you?re frightened, you can be frightened You can be x ok!! And if you?re frightened, you can be frightened You can be x-ok!!
probably just a statement expressing that the fear of standing alone is better than depending on an artificial ideal?.
Mimmsicle
"Acoustic #3" by the Goo Goo Dolls They painted up your secrets With the lies they told you And the least they ever gave you Was the most you ever knew And I wonder where these dreams go When the world gets in your way What's the point in all this screaming No one's listening anyway You voice is small and fading And you hide in here unknown And your mother loves your father 'Cause she's got nowhere to go And she wonders where these dreams go 'Cause the world got in her way What's the point in ever trying Nothing's changing anyway They press their lips against you And you love the lies they say And I tried so hard to reach you But you're falling anyway And you know I see right through you When the world gets in your way What's the point in all the screaming You're not listening anyway ______________________ if you only search for what you want to find, then that's all you'll end up with. the more you scream the lesser you are heard. why is it that you're sought only when you're no longer looking to be found ? and with that I rest my case. - Mimmi
Mitch
Pink Floyd-The Trial Good morning, the worm, your honour, The crown will plainly show, The prisoner who now stands before you, Was caught red-handed showing feelings. Showing feelings of an almost human nature. This will not do. Call the schoolmaster! I always said he?d come to no good, In the end, your honour. If they?d let me have my way, I could have flayed him into shape. But my hands were tied. The bleeding hearts and artists, Let him get away with murder. Let me hammer him today. Crazy. Toys in the attic, I am crazy. Truly gone fishing. They must have taken my marbles away. (crazy. toys in the attic, he is crazy.) You little shit, you?re in it now. I hope they throw away the key. You should?ve talked to me more often than you did. But no! you had to go your own way. Have you broken any homes up lately? Just five minutes, worm, your honour, Him and me alone. Baaaaaabe! Come to mother, baby. Let me hold you in my arms. M?lord, I never meant for him to get in any trouble. Why?d he ever have to leave me? Worm, your honour, let me take him home. Crazy. Over the rainbow, I am crazy. Bars in the window. There must have been a door there in the wall. For when I came in. . . (crazy. over the rainbow, he is crazy.) The evidence before the court is incontravertible. There?s no need for the jury to retire. In all my years of judging I have never heard before, Of someone more deserving of the full penalty of the law. The way you made them suffer, Your exquisite wife and mother, Fills me with the urge to deficate! -- no, judge, the jury! Since, my friend, you have revealed your deepest fear, I sentence you to be exposed before your peers. Tear down the wall! It appears to be a trial. "The bleeding hearts and the artists" is a phrase seen in The Wall often. It basically goes to say those that are in love and are creative. At least this is my perception of it. The wall is often mentioned often in this concept album. One thinks that it might be about the Berlin wall...but I don't tie into that. I think its intended meaning is fans misunderstanding a band...since they don't actually see what they are like. But my personal connection is that creativity itself creates a wall...and some people just don't understand it. This song sounds really satirical to me. And the way it's sang is also pointing me in this direction. It seems to me to be about creativity...and how people are constantly not allowed to use it.
Good morning, the worm, your honour, The crown will plainly show, The prisoner who now stands before you, Was caught red-handed showing feelings. Showing feelings of an almost human nature. This will not do.
Feelings of an almost human nature...this is what creativity is. It's one's self expression.
I always said he?d come to no good, In the end, your honour. If they?d let me have my way, I could have flayed him into shape. But my hands were tied. The bleeding hearts and artists, Let him get away with murder. Let me hammer him today.
Let him get away with murder. Taking it literally, perhaps whomever is on trial committed murder. But the song goes to say that the "bleeding hearts and artists" allowed him to get away with murder. Meaning they allowed him to create, perhaps. Or perhaps the way I am thinking is totally off. Who knows. That's why it's called an opinion lol.
Crazy. Toys in the attic, I am crazy. Truly gone fishing. They must have taken my marbles away. (crazy. toys in the attic, he is crazy.)
One of my favorite parts of the song. The person who is on trial admits they think they are crazy.
The evidence before the court is incontravertible.
The judge decides his decision saying it makes him feel like "deficating"--moving his bowels. If this isn't sarcastic and satrical, I don't know what is lol. It ends with the nice imagery and nice little phrase of "tear down the wall." The song itself comes off as funny...the way the lines are read, they sound like their parts. The judge's voice is loud and boomy...and such. The Judge is also addressed as "worm your honor." A worm is something crawling, something small, something that is blind, and something that can't possibly know what it's like to be human. This is my interpretation of what the judge symbolizes. As for the tearing down of the wall...well, meaning the end of this man's creativity if you're going with what I think. Or perhaps the end of racial descrimination by destroying prejudices rather than having them there. Hm. This song is quite interesting to say the least. Kyo no Ryu
Oh yeah, for the lyrics I posted before... those are some of my favorite lyrics because, their just so truthful.
And the memory now is like the picture was then. When the papers crmpled up it cant be perfect again.
I think its saying once youve forgotten somehing you can never learn it back the same way.
polution manefested and prepetual sound
thats the modern world for ya. And here are more LP lyrics: Pushing Me away Ive lied/to you the same way that I always do this is/the last smile that ill fake for the sake of being with you [Everything falls apart/even the people who never frown eventually brake down] the sacrifice of hiding in a lie [everything has to end/youll soon find were out of time left to watch it all unwind] the sacrifice is never knowing why I never walked away why I played myself this way now I see/ your testing me/ pushes me away Ive tried/like you to do everything you wanted to this is/the last time Ill take te blame for the sake of being with you [Everything falls apart/even the people who never frown eventually brake down] the sacrifice of hiding in a lie [everything has to end/youll soon find were out of time left to watch it all unwind] the sacrifice is never knowing why I never walked away why I played myself this way now I see/ your testing me/ pushes me away why I never walked away why I played myself this way now I see/ your testing me/ pushes me away pushes me away _________________________________________ these are some of my favorite
[Everything falls apart/even the people who never frown eventually brake down] the sacrifice of hiding in a lie [everything has to end/youll soon find were out of time left to watch it all unwind]
Once again the lyrics are so true. Theres no point in describing, its very straitforward. And that other song was called forgotten.
KarmaOfChaos
I had this big long post written out and then...I accidently clicked another button, losing that post forever. So if this one's rather short...not my fault. Don't feel like thinking or typing that all out again.
Originally posted by Mimmi "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M Life is bigger It's bigger than you And you are not me The lengths that I will go to The distance in your eyes Oh no I've said too much I set it up
Life's bigger than both of them, but that's not what really matters to him. All he wants is her acknowlegment that he's there, that he exists. And then he's afraid that he's spilled too much of his soul, set himself up for disaster and rejection.
That's me in the corner That's me in the spotlight Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no I've said too much I haven't said enough I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try
He's in the corner, yet in the spotlight at the same time. He's trying so hard to tell her how he feels, yet he's not sure if he even wants to. 'Losing my religion' refers to the fact that he's sacrificing everything in his life, his religion, for her. Once again there's a fear of rejection, and he's thinks he's deluding himself to believe that she might return his feelings. 'I've said too much, oh no, I haven't said enough.'
Every whisper Of every waking hour I'm Choosing my confessions Trying to keep an eye on you Like a hurt lost and blinded fool Oh no I've said too much I set it up
Trying to keep an eye on her even though he himself is blind.
Consider this The hint of the century Consider this The slip that brought me To my knees failed What if all these fantasies Come flailing around Now I've said too much I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try But that was just a dream That was just a dream.....
He's confessed his thoughts to her, and he's terrified that he's going to lose her forever now. He's convinced that any sort of requited feelings aren't real. 'That was just a dream.' A great song. REM rocks. And now here's one of my favorites: Tragic Kingdom No Doubt Once was a magical place Over time it was lost Price increased the cost Now the fortune of the kingdom Is locked up in its dungeoun vaults The castle floor lies in traps Withe coiled wires set back Decoyed by old cheese Now the drawbridge has been lifted As the millions They drop to their knees. A kingdom that was once great slowly rots away, decayed by time and corrupted by greed. Yet the people still bow down, afraid to do otherwise. They pay homage to a king Whose dreams are buried In their minds His tears are frozen stiff Icicles drip from his eyes The people worship a king who is long since dead, but his ideals are so impounded into their minds, they cannot think otherwise. Still, they worship his frozen image. The cold wind blows as it snows On those who fight to get in On heads that are small Disillusionaed as they enter They're unaware what's Behind castle walls Nut now it's written in stone The king has been overthrown By jesterly fools And the power of the people Shall come to believe they do rule This verse mocks the revolution of the people. The 'jesterly fools' overthrow the king, and believe that they are in power, when in all actuality, they still follow his government, his beliefs, just with a different face. They pay homage to a king Whose dreams are buried In their minds His tears are frozen stiff Icicles drip from his eyes Welcome to the tragic kingdom Cornfields of popcorn Have yet to spring open The cornfields are already destined to become popcorn, even though they have not begun to sprout. Popcorn must be taken in the commercialized sense. Have they lost their heads Or are they all just blind mice We've heard all their stories One too many times Hypnotized by fireflies That glow in the dark Midgets that disguise themselves AS tiny little dwarfs The parage that's electrical It serves no real purpose Just takes up a lot of juice Just to impress us She questions whether they're insane, or they're just blind, submitting to him without question. 'Hypnotized by fireflies that glow in the dark,' but dissapear in daylight (being drawn in by a lie that seems so beautiful, but doesn't exist when brought in the light of simple truth.) 'Midgets that disguise themselves as tiny little dwarfs' (Pretending to be something you are not.) Then it goes on to say that this parade is just for show, just a lie that means nothing, only looks pretty and wastes time and energy. Welcome to the tradgic kingdom Cornfields of popcorn Have yet to spring open Another great song. =) -Karma {Gosh that took a long time to do twice. Sara
Faith.. you?re driving me away You do it everyday You don?t mean it but it hurts like hell. I've hardly heard any of these songs before, so I don't pretend to know much about them, heh. These couple lines caught my attention, though. Sometimes when you care about someone, you're too close to realize they don't care about you (anymore). And the little things they do or say (that remind you they don't care) hurt enough to kill you. Eh, anyway. It's nothing long or remarkable, but that's what I thought of.
Mitch
Radiohead-Street Spirit (Fade Out) Rows of houses all bearing down on me I can feel their blue hands touching me All these things in all positions All these things we'll one day swallow whole And fade out again And fade out This machine will Will not communicate These thoughts And the strain i am under Be a world child form a circle before we all Go under And fade out again And fade out again Cracked eggs, dead birds Scream as they fight for life I can feel death, can see its beady eyes All these things into frution All these things we'll one day swallow whole And fade out again And fade out again Immerse your soul in love Immerse your soul in love I positively love this song. It's quite depressing, melancholy. It basically consists of this same guitar melody played over and over again, taking prominence over all things except Thom Yorke's (the main singer of Radiohead) voice. And again, Thom Yorke excels in this song. It just gives me chills...the emotion is there. Add to that that the lyrics are wonderful, and you have an amazing song. You really just have to hear it to know it all coming together. And the way it comes together is really beautiful. It's like a hard-ribbed sigh. Something forced...yet not.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me I can feel their blue hands touching me All these things in all positions All these things we'll one day swallow whole And fade out again And fade out
The world seems so organized as it is. Rows. Everything is put into rows. Houses are just backdrops, they are just there. They are blue, devoid of anything but wood and the things which give them their material. When I hear this line, I can just see rows of houses, rows of houses like hands. All blue and bearing down. The remaining lines say this: look at everything. Look at it from all positions, all ways, all forms. They are all things we'll one day swallow whole. Things one day that will be gone. That will fade into obscurity.
This machine will Will not communicate These thoughts And the strain i am under Be a world child form a circle before we all Go under And fade out again And fade out again
Society could be the machine. God could be the machine. The human intellect could be the machine. The entirety of what it is to be human could be the machine. Whatever it is, take your pick. All the things tie into each other. "Be a world child form a circle before We all go under." Live on to carry our lives on as we die and fade out. Carry on the torch. Live to continue the lives of others and give life to others. Be a circle. Be something held together. Be something that spins forever in perpetual bliss and keeps going over where it's gone over and over again, fading out again and again.
Cracked eggs, dead birds Scream as they fight for life I can feel death, can see its beady eyes All these things into frution All these things we'll one day swallow whole And fade out again And fade out again
Broken eggs. Scrambled eggs. Cracked eggs. Isn't that the stuff of dreams? They always seem to die. Things that once flew, that were once birds. Things that even though they seemed like birds were only eggs, broken eggs being broken and scrambled. Dead and dying birds; dreams no long winded, dreams no longer felt. Fading out. All these things swallowed whole. All these things lived for. And to what purpose? What purpose other than to fade out again and again? And you can see death. Can see its beady eyes, long, beady eyes that haven't come yet, that are so very far away. But you can feel it. It's breathing on you right now.
Immerse your soul in love Immerse your soul in love
Love is the only thing to live for. As everything fades, it's the only thing that can be held onto. It is the only hope that can give you enough footholding to keep you going on and on in the circle that is life. It is the only thing that can keep you going as you fade out again and again, dimmer and dimmer and dimmer. The only way to numb the pain is through another. To hug and kiss and caress another, to make them feel your emotions in your touch and the way you smile and the way you sigh and the way you move. It is the only thing that makes death's coming worth it all. I really love this song..
Mimmsicle
Mitch: that last Radiohead song. is the video accompanying it the one where they're at this circus-lot ? every now and then it goes in slowmotion ? ok, just one more then I'm outta here. promise. ______________ "Mother Mother" by Tracy Bonham Mother mother how's the family, I'm just calling to say hello How's the weather how's my father am I lonely heavens no Mother mother are you listening, just a phone call to ease your mind Life is perfect never better, distance making the heart grow blind When you sent me off to see the world, where you scared that I might get hurt Would I try a little tobacco, would I keep on hiking up my skirt I'm hungry I'm dirty I'm losing my mind Everything's fine I'm freezing I'm starving I'm bleeding to death Everything's fine Yeah, I'm working, making money I'm just starting to build a name I can feel it around the corner, I could make it any day Mother mother can you hear me, sure I'm sober sure I'm sane Life is perfect never better, still your daughter still the same If I tell you what you want to hear, will it help you to sleep well at night Are you sure that I'm your perfect dear, now just cuddle up and sleep tight I'm hungry I'm dirty I'm losing my mind Everything's fine I'm freezing I'm starving I'm bleeding to death Everything's fine I miss you I love you ________________ I just love how it ends with "I miss you, I love you". like a routine practised to perfection. it's difficult to get the feel for this song unless you've heard it. there's the screechy violin, (reminiscent of nails down the blackboard) that I guess represents the screams your brain is emanating, from being hassled and not able to respond in the truthful manner you desire to. The guitar that attempts to soothe you, so you can give people the time of day without putting them in their coffins. and the drums+electric guitar as you play with the idea of pulling back the blinds and forcing someone to look into the sun. If I were someone else than the picture you have of me, would you accept it ? sometimes people can't take the truth of who you are/have become, so you tell them the sweet lies they want to hear and everything is "fine".
