Grave of the Fireflies

I almost bought it several times in the past... But never did. I saw it at Best Buy the other day, and grabbed it. Apparently they reissued the DVD recently, because the casing is totally different now and it comes with an interview DVD.

Anyway, I thought it was great. In short, it's basically about the lives of a boy and his little sister during the last phases of World War II. Most of the time is spent showing their relationship, which is one of the reasons I liked it so much. They seemed like real brother and sister that truly did care for eachother, rather than predicatable anime/cartoon characters. It was strange mostly because they seemed more lifelike than some live action movies of this kind lol. I actually felt for the characters, especially near the end.

It was definately a nice change of pace from most other anime, especially the types talked about on these boards. I can't think of many anime I've seen that didn't have some fantasy aspect to it. This seems to be one of the few.

I love the movie. I read from online reviews that it was a really good movie, so the first (and only, unfortunately) time I saw it at Media Play I bought it. the first time I saw it, I watched it with one of my sisters and my mom. all three of us cried at some point in the movie. and even though that my mom hates anime, she liked GotF (despite what she'd have you think).

the little sister of the narrator seemed very real (not literally speaking, of course). her expressions and the way she acted in the movie reminded me of how a real child would have reacted. I forget where I heard this, but supposedly the movie was animated instead of taped in live action simply because a child actor wouldn't have been able to portray her character so genuinely. I thought it was pretty interesting.

I loved the anime, had to buy it again on DvD when they released that special edition version. Still worth it though. The anime makes me cry everytime I see it.

It's very good. I did a thread on it here a while back... which got a few more replies than I thought it would. I think it's something anyone should see, regardless of whether or not they like anime.

I did a review of it for theotaku actually, if you care to read it go here: http://reviews.theotaku.com/index.php?section=reviews&view=36

I wrote way too much most likely, but I think it gets my points across well (although perhaps it might spoil some minor things). It's probably best to skim through it after you saw the movie heh.

Yep, seen it.

It is a great anime movie, but just too horribly depressing. At least it does not try to "soften" the reality of the situation. That is what I liked best about it. There was no kidding around, it was just straight forward, cold hard reality.

All in all, I would recommend it to anyone that wants to see a great anime movie, but who cannot be easily saddened.

Well I will tell you this Anime_gurl the only times I've ever cried over an anime was the Macross ending, and Grave of the FireFlies. The movie is so sad and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone depressed or sucidal a great film that will be a tear jerker to anyone who has even half a heart.

Thumbs up I'd give it around a 9. ;)

Grave of the fireflies is a very good statement about the effects of war on civilians. It does not try to place the blame or accept the blam of the war. It is simply showing what war does to innocents and is a good reminder of what can and does happen in a war. It is a kind of Civilian anime version of Alls Quiet on the Western Front.

It is a truly good movie. I think it's the only Studio Ghibli film not produced or directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and it's still amazingly realistic, sad, and isn't afraid to be frank. It's and insanely good movie.. I atched it agian last night too... Woohoo.. Go and buy.. The new DVD has a special features disk that's filled with fun goodies.
Never heard of it. Where do you people find out/hear about all these Anime anyway? Are they unknown or something? I only watch the ones that are famous in Japan and have good ratings there...like CB or Inu....
You find out about it by internet browsing of course!!! It really just luck. The favourite lists on amazon can be ok....but i give up a lot with those because you just cant find stuff most of the time.
But seriously you should watch it. Because its amazing. The animation is amazingly drawn, the story real, the characters...i haven't even got started.
Very sad though. But that makes it so amazing because it wouldn't be so sensational if it was all happy nd flowery. I cry in loads of films...but this one deserved it.
anyway ill go now...

This is one of the best Ghibli films, one of the best anime, and one of the best
movies period I've ever seen. I think this film should be mandatory viewing. It's one of very few movies that, in my opinion anyway, would change the outlooks of every person who watched it.

I'm disappointed in not posting in this thread earlier. Thank you Nekova for bringing it back to the first page. I would almost agree with you about the mandatory viewing.
Seeing the Second World War from a Japanese perspective can be refreshingly different from the winner's point of view. The story is also heart warming and deeply touching. It was one of the first anime to move me to tears. (And trust me I was bawling).

The only problem I had with it was the dub. I am all for dubs, but the little girl's English actress was annoying. I fell in love with the Japanese actors though. It's amazing how young they really were.

It's also terribly upsetting when you find out that the movie is pretty much a true story. The only difference is that the main character
didn't die
in real life. (I'll put that in spoilers even though the first line is "September 9th, 1945...
that was the day I died.
"

I agree. I love this movie so. And it is just a depressing story overall. It was one of the first animated movies that I cried so much in. Some of my friends who don't like anime watched this and loved it. Because we're learning about the World Wars right now, the class is trying to get my teachers to show this movie.

Seeing another perspective made me unusually tingly as I watched Grave of the Fireflies. We're always learning in school how the United States suffered so much, but I don't think I've heard the teacher shed much light onto what happened after the bombs in Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

This movie is definatly amazing.

I recently heard this movie was voted one of the greatest war stories ever told1 amazing. I am yet to see it but from what i've heard it seems to be one of Isao Takahata's greatest features.

Its sometimes dissapointing to hear when people talk about Studio Ghibli they rarely talk much about Isao Takahata and more about Hayao. Although Hayao is one of the Greatest animators of all time i think Isao should recieve more recognition for his works some of them are way up there with Hayao's. :animesigh

Hey D. Resurrected,

It's great that you've seen this movie and like it, but maybe you could explain why you like it?
Remember that this forum heavily emphasizes conversation, so try to have some content in there to help aid the conversation. ^^

In Canada, be it the first or second world war, we only learn about the Canadian home efforts and the battles that the Canadians were involved in (Vimy Ridge anyone?).

This is horrific:

article about this here: http://www.comicon.com/thebeat/2006/06/more_trauma_food.html

Why would ANYONE buy this, with the tragic associations from the film?!

This would be my number one item not to take to an anime screening to make new friends! :animeblus :animecry:
