I just figured I'd post this news. It pretty much confirms what I've said--but at the same time, it may provide a bit of hope for you non-PS2 owners.
An Investor's Business Daily report suggests that after Rockstar's exclusivity contract with Sony ends in 2004, the company plans to bring both Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to the Xbox and GameCube that same year. However, Rockstar has not officially announced any such plans, and representatives from the company were unavailable to comment on the story as of press time.
As you can see, nothing is even remotely confirmed and one would assume that Sony would do all that's in its power to keep the series exclusive, but, we'll see what happens eventually.

Charles I'd question that. I don't believe that it has much to do with sony, mainly because they can't do much. I think it's more the problem of porting it, they don't want to get any ones hopes up.
I remember when they made GTA3 they had always intended to make it for ps2 and then port it to pc, looked good in theory. But the porting process was harder than they had imagined. That was why GTA3:VC was never built to be ported to pc (easily) so this is why I would think that they aren?t promising any thing... Porting to Xbox would be hell, worse than porting to a pc.
(But from "inside" sources I know that they are experimenting with platforms they can take it to, and pc production is well under way. No eta...)

Well, True Crimes is supposed to be amazing, and they have some great ideas to be added. Does anyone know the release date? I really want this game, as I feel it will run so well on the X Box, as it is a very powerful system. After all, surely we deserve a game, maybe not GTA, but at least the equivalent to it. I doubt that Sony will let this game series go easily...it's been exclusive since day one, obviously except for PC though. But, as Charles said...we'll see what happens eventually.

What are you on? True Crimes is coming out on the X Box, all the magazines are reviewing it, and if it wasn't, why would we bring it up in the Microsoft forum?
Anyway, it looks great, but after watching a few movies it looks like it could be a bit like the PS2's 'The Getaway', which I didn't rate at all.

There are a couple of points to make about this.

1) Sony and Rockstar do have an exclusivity agreement with this franchise. There's no getting around that. Sony can do much, in the sense that Rockstar physically isn't allowed to produce ports for competing consoles for a certain period of time. Having said that, I think that a GTAIII/VC release on Xbox and GameCube in 2004 is, to put it mildly, a bit late. Unless the two games were released together as a special bundle or something, I think it'd be a bit of a cop out for owners of those consoles.

2) From what I know, GTAIII and VC are developed using the Renderware platform. One of Renderware's greatest strengths is its cross-platform capability. Afterall, this is why Sonic Team has specifically chosen Renderware as its middleware of choice - because Sonic Heroes is a multiplatform release. So, I don't really buy the argument that Rockstar physically finds it difficult to port the game. At least, I don't see these games being any more difficult to port than other Rockstar releases.
