Shaw slowly opened her eyes and looked around Hole 139. All Rats lived in Holes under the ground, it was how the 'powers' dealt with them. 'Keep them out of sight....keep them out of mind', a very standard ideology when it came to anyone dealing with Rats. She rubbed the sleep gently from her eyes and took into account the lack of noise.

Usually the trains and water systems would be loud, the only thing that could ever drown it out was the general talk between the others when they got back from their days work, and Admiral Sidney's long rant's about their progress or more correctly failures at keeping the city in working order. Shaw had never been alone in the Hole, usually she was at work with the others...but an accident over two and a hlaf weeks ago had left her with a broken leg and black eye. She had been deemed unfit to work and was therefore confined to the Hole, until her leg fixed itself. Currently it was raised slightly on a piece of wood, it hadn't even been bangaged!

She tried to lift it and winced as pain rocketed through it. She sighed, all she wanted to do was go back to the Tunnel's and be with the others. Was that so hard of a request. She twisted her head to the left and listened to a distant sound. It sounded somewhat odd, like a group of people marching on the street level. Then she recalled the annual hoilday. Everyone would have to remain underground for two full days. She smiled slightly...at least she would have someone to talk to. She gently scratched behind her ear and wondered what would happen this time. The powers always managed to wreck something and this time there would be no acception.

She closed her eyes again, thinking that if she slept a little while longer then she could wake up when the others were back. But another noise caused her to tilt her head again. "No way" she whispered to herself. The noise was unmistakable, it was the sound of the guards bringing the others in. But surely it was to early for them to return, wasn't it? Unless she had misjudged the time. 'Sod it', she thought to herself, 'At least I'm not going to be alone anymore'.

She watched the door to the Hole and waited for her friends to come.

Alex had a hard timing sweeping the sidewalk with all of the people around because of the celebration. Normally he would have done it much later but he didn't have anything to do but twiddle his thumbs. Then, before he knew what was happening, some one pulled his hat off his head and pushed him against the wall. It was a well-built, black-haired teenager.
"Well, well. What do we have here?"
The boy pushed Alex's hair off his forehead and stared at the large, yellow arrow.
"It looks like we've caught us a rat, guys." The teenager said, smiling.
For the first time, Alex noticed that there were three more kids behind the boy pinning him to the wall. All of them were carrying weapons.
"What should I do? Should I run or stay and fight? If I fight, I might not be let out on the streets anymore...but I can't just keep running away!" He thought.
His hand trembled. Without thinking, he punched the kid straight in the jaw. The teenager went down hard. His buddies just stood there in shock.

Nezumi was always running messages, despite being a Tunneller.
"Nezumi do this!"
"Nezumi do that!"
"Take the message you RAT!"

Nezumi was a genuinely caring boy by nature, not especially well built for arguing, and maybe that was why he was always the one to do all the running.
Pushing a manhole cover aside, Nezumi hoisted himself up onto the street. He liked it above ground... it wasn't so dark... darkness confused him a little, so he tried to stay away from it whenever he could. Then, suddenly, from somewhere to his right, an immense battle-cry sounded, causing Nezumi to take to his feet and sprint towards it.
He found the source of the disagreement and stopped dead, blinking hard. Somehow Alex had found the nerve to take down one of the youths, but there were three more to contend with.
To fight, or be silent?
He didn't want to have to decide, but Alex's life seemed to depend on the decision. Lunging forward, the small boy pulled up the brush Alex had been using to sweep up and cracked another boy across the head with it, causing him to hit the ground with a thump.
"You can't hurt him!"
The two remaining boys, now enraged, glared between the rats. "Why in the hell not?!"
"I have a message for his boss, and I can't find him. So, I need to ask him." Nervous at his own words, Nezumi adjusted the grip on his sweeping brush. "Just leave us alone!"
"Now you get this straight, you little-"
"WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?!"
Nezumi blinked in confusion, turning towards the huge voice.
"My boss..." murmured Alex, a twinge of fear tainting the words.
"Oh..."
I'll tell you what's going on!" barked one of the boys, helping his groaning comrades to their feet. "Those two... those Rats attacked us! Next time it happens I'll pull their brains inside out with my own mind!!"
The boss turned a cold eye on the two smaller boys, "Don't worry lad... I have half a mind to do that m'self." Suddenly, he snatched the brush from Nezumi, glaring at him. "And what're you doing up here? Shirking work are you?!"
"N..no sir. I have a message... from underground..."
"I don't want no excuses!" Grabbing them both by their ears, and apologising to the youths profusely, he dragged Alex and Nezumi below ground, bellowing loudly if they fell.
"Maybe a little confinement'll show you some manners lads!" he yelled, throwing them into the room they stopped at and bolting the door soundly behind them. "Maybe I'll not feed ya neither!"

Shaw blinked as the two pulled themselves upright, grumbling.
"Uhh... Hi guys..."
"Your boss," declared Nezumi, turning to Alex. "Your boss is an official madman. And I won't take that back while I'm still here breathing..."

Alex laughed.
"Don't worry, you don't have to. I agree with you."
Shaw looked at both of her visitors.
"So...what happened?" She asked.
Alex shook his head.
"It was my fault. Some kids were bothering me and I made the mistake of punching one of them. Then Nezumi came to help me. If I had just left those kids alone, we wouldn't be in this mess."
Nezumi stood up and looked Alex in the face.
"It wasn't a mistake, Alex. They deserved it. Besides, I wanted to help you."
Shaw smiled.
"And now I have some company."

Shaw looked at the two younger Rats and shook her head. "You two are certainly twits if I ever saw some" her voice was slightly sarcastic. "Oh c'mon Shaw...it wasn't..." started both boys simutanously but Shaw interupted them, "I know it wasn't your fault. It never is with you two. Honestly anyone would think that you were..." pauses and tries to think of the correct word, "relative".

"Huh? What do you mean by that?" asked Alex, walking up to her and sitting down on the floor, playfully taking ahold of her hand and starting to play an old number game on it. "Family" said Shaw gently smiling. "I thought we were family?" said Nezumi, also coming up to her and calmbering over the end of the bed, careful to avoid her leg, and hugging into her side. With a hint of sarcastim in her voice "Yeah as if I would want you two for brothers".

Alex looked up at her, "Don't you like us anymore, Shaw?" he asked in a sad little voice. "Of cause I do you stupid twit, you both know that" she gently ruffled Alex's hair and placed her other arm around Nezumi in a one armed hug. "How's your leg?" asked Nezumi. "Getting better....but I'm gonna still be out of the Tunnels. Nez what were you doing on street level anyway? I mean Tunnelers aren't permitted there" she asked, her voice filled with worry. "He was a message runner" said Alex.

Shaw sighed and shook her head, "Well, it looks like this celebration is going to be real quite for us".
