Final Fantasy XI

I'm not so sure if anyone knows, but FFXI is coming out on November 4th, 2003. This Fall!!! The game is going to be the first online MMORPG in the Final Fantasy line. Personally, I'm dying to get this.
The story takes place in a world called Vana'diel, there you can create your character for the game, and will be able to team up with other characters. You'll be able to choose the race that you want, the sex, the way the face looks, the size of the body, job class, etc. A lot of not known about this game. Has anyone heard anything else about this game? And if you have, are you going to get it?

I'm defintely getting it. Basically all you need to know is what you just typed. I don't want to get too much into it now, it'll probably spoil something.

Originally, I was planning on getting the PC version, but I'm not so sure any more. First, I really doubt my PC will be able to run it, and I don't have the money to upgrade it. Second, there are too many other games that I'd want to spend the $10 a month on. (Isn't that about what is costs per month in Japan?) Since I only make about $30 a month, that'd only leave $20 for other games. And I don't want to go back to only being able to get a new GCN game every three months. :cross:

Ahahahaha. I thought the game was going to be released next year like it said on the FOX 11 news ( they showned the whole begginning part of FFXI ) It was about Video Game Graphics... It said this is the first RPG game (or FF game) to be online. Do you ahve to pay the charges for beiong online?

Not sure if it's November 4th, 2003 though.

If you want to play FFXI, you have to pay a monthly fee. But I've heard its going to be like EverQuest is. You might have to buy a game card and enter the code into the game, thats the way I think is best. And I'm pretty sure the release is November 4th, cause I saw on a site that date and many other gamers have heard it too. I can't wait to get it, since I play 8+ hours of RPGs already. Now I can play with other gamers. Yay!

I'm still waiting for FFXI to be released, its gonna take a long time though in the UK, I don't think the PS2 has even gone online yet here :bluesweat

I think I'll be able to manage though until it comes out, it's been out in Japan since February I believe? Possibly slightly earlier

I won't be getting FFXI, mostly because I don't have enough money to be able to pay for something monthly like this. If it was any cheaper, I'd so get it, I think it looks amazing and the freedom of gameplay is very good as well, just getting tasks/quests from random NPCs. Good stuff. ^^

I won't be getting it. I don't have the money, and Final Fantasy as an online game has always seemed bad in my mind.

I'm a classic gamer. I like RPGs the way they're meant to be.

In my opinion, FFXI isn't really like an FF game, it's just an online RPG. This is 'cause the only elements from other FF games you get in there are the classes and that's it. Does anyone else think this?

I agree with ya Weh. I'm also hoping they'll have other common elements though, like Choco's, maybe some Moogles, and i bet there'll be some random NPC called Cid.

*cough* . . . Um, yeah, there are Chocobos and Moogles in FFXI. I don't think they could get away with calling it a Final Fantasy game without them.

What about Cactuars, eh? ;)

But seriously, this still doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy game. I don't really know why.. no storyline? *shrugs* But it's still looking/sounding good though. :)

Personally, I feel SquareEnix should have set this FF apart from the rest, as in, not one of the numbered FFs.

The question is, where will FFXi be in 5 years? It took me just that long to get ahold of FF7 (late RPG bloomer, heh), and that was for the PC. Do you really think the server (or whatever they call it) for this game will still be around?

I'm pretty sure I've seen a screen shot of a Cactuar, actually. :p But still, I think people should wait to play it until they say it doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy game. I mean, really, how can you tell without having played it?

And there is a storyline, of sorts. I'm not sure on exactly how it works, but I remember reading on GameSpot when they were playing the japanese version that you can go on quests and such, fight bosses, that sort of thing. So I suppose there isn't really one main storyline, but more like a bunch of smaller stories. (And I think I remember hearing that they'd be adding more quests and stuff after the game was up and running).

And about where FFXI will be in a few years after its release, I'm worried about that too. I know I won't be able to get it when it first comes out, if ever. I'm guessing I'll have to wait at least a year or two before I'll be able to get a PS2, network adapter, and hard drive, or be able to upgrade my PC enough to run it. I've heard rumors that Square Enix is only going to keep the servers running for a couple years, but I have no idea whether that's at all true. Maybe it'll be like EverQuest, though, and last practically forever. It'll probably just depend on how popular it is and how much money it makes.

If it ends up like EverQuest, though, that would mean those add-on programs (can't think of the offical name for them). In which case it goes back to me saying that SquareEnix should have set this MMORPG aside from the numbered series.

Does anyone know if it will be playable by itself, as in, no internet connection?

I agree with Ginny, I reckon that this FF shouldn't be labeled as a Final Fantasy game. I think that's because it's the first online one and it's totally different from every other FF game.

'Breko! More screens, boy!!11

Yeah, I do kind of agree that they should have made FFXI an offshoot game like Tactics is and not in the main series, but really, I don't care that much. All it is is a name.

And if you want screen shots, just go here. GameSpot has a bunch, and they're new ones, too. Those two that I posted up are from months ago, before the game was even out in Japan. They've got some pics of some character models, too, which look really good.

I so wish I could get this game when it first comes out. >_<

Before Square merged with Enix, Square said something about closing the servers down in like 2004 or something like that I believe. This was long before it was announced for US release, or even before the game was making a profit... so things may have changed.
