Failed_Attempts Posted May 20, 2003 Share Posted May 20, 2003 Hmm, I'm an american and write colour. It is prettier. And, it's a habit. Earlier, someone said "artery" gave them a bit of trouble. It's like seperated "art-er-e" That's my elaboration of it. @_@; It's probably wrong. ~_~; Susceptible, I have the hardest time trying to pronounce it. I can, if I slow down and think about it, but, if I'm reading out loud; I can't. Otherwise, I'm pretty good at pronouciation and knowing the meanings of words. Sara Posted May 20, 2003 Share Posted May 20, 2003 heh...color vs. colour. I have a story about that. When I was in second grade, and reading the Hobbit, we had a spelling test; one of the words was COLOR. I'd just been through the first few chapters of the book, and had specifically noted the spelling of the word. I wrote colour on my test, and got it marked wrong. When I got the test back, I didn't say anything, didn't check a dictionary....went home and checked my copy of The Hobbit. C-O-L-O-U-R. Pffeff, memories.. On a similar note, who uses grey and who uses gray? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Failed_Attempts Posted May 20, 2003 Share Posted May 20, 2003 That's what I would've done on my spelling test too. It's become such a habit, it bugs me when people spell color sometimes. @_@; On another note, I spell grey, mainly because of Dir en Grey. ~_~; Oh yeah, as someone said in a previous post, the "ph" and "f" get me confused @_@; When I'm in a hurry I end up writing "fone" instead of "phone" on accident. It all confuses me. @_@ (EDIT! I was also curious as to do you keep the 'U' like in Favourite, Flavour, Colour, etc... or just make it a 'O' Like americans (for the most part) do. Favorite, Flavor, Color, etc? Plus, I found another word that messes me up. "Anti" it messes me up every time,there's 2 different pronounciations. @_@; ) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Lady Macaiodh Posted May 20, 2003 Share Posted May 20, 2003 I spell "gray" when referring to the color and "grey" when referring to the aliens. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Sara Posted May 21, 2003 Share Posted May 21, 2003 I actually just leave out the "u" now. I think it looks...cleaner...the other way. So, yeas...unless I'm feeling arrogant or fancy, I just use the Amercan spelling there. I use grey for the color...and, uh...aliens? What? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Lady Macaiodh Posted May 21, 2003 Share Posted May 21, 2003 You know, "The Greys." The big headed gray aliens that abduct people & give them anal probes & such. That's what the researchers or whoever call them, & that's how they spell it. That's the only time I spell it with an e. By the way, I don't believe in those things. :p Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Manic Webb Posted May 21, 2003 Share Posted May 21, 2003 I use grey and gray interchangably, but I like using grey a little bit more. No reasoning behind it. I just can't decide which one to use. The only word I use the U in is "neighbour." I'd actually forgotten that it's sometimes spelled "neighbor" for a while. I spelled it "neighbour" for years, until people started complaining. Another couple of words I don't like are capitol and capital. Which one is the opposite of lowercase letters? Which one is the main city of a country? Which one has to do with profit? One word I swear I never spell right is "collapse." It just looks like I'm using too many Ls or put the S in the wrong place. Who else hates the way these words are all spelled alike and are pronounced different ways? Cough, laugh, through, tough, taught, thought, enough, rough. The slightest typo, and Rogue suddenly becomes Rouge. Do you know how many times I've called a certain X-Men character "Rouge"? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Solo Tremaine Posted May 21, 2003 Share Posted May 21, 2003 I cen never remember which is the proper spelling of grey/gray. I think I tend to use grey, but I probably chop and change depending on which comes into mind first. If nothing else I'll put gr[scribble]y, and people can work it out form there. I have problems with u, too (Heh...). Mostly in gauge or tongue. I keep writing gague or tounge. It's really bizarre. Although personally I prefer the British spellings of 'colour' etc. As for pet peeves of english- misuse of apostrophes get me. People here use it far too often to signify a plural, like 'orange's', and it shouldn't be used for that. An example of people trying to be too intelligent but actually getting it wrong- hyperextension or something like that. Another thing which annoys me is when people say 'should of', as in 'I should of said something'. Really, it should be 'should have'. Should of doesn't make any sense if you break it down logically into its components. That's verbal pronunciation breaking into written form (English Language A-Levels make me feel sooo smart...) Failed_Attempts Posted May 21, 2003 Share Posted May 21, 2003 Heh, that's why I write "should've." I hate all the words with U's like Tough, Through, Though, Thought, Thorough (sp?), and all of those type words. They're just TOO alike. @_@; I can always get Tongue right... Hahaha, Sara! Fancy or Arrogant. That's funny. Tee hee hee. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Sara Posted May 22, 2003 Share Posted May 22, 2003 Who, hoo! Our public school system rocks. Heh, yeah. I used to think people were just being lazy...and some are...but many honestly just guess at which one to use, or just pick one and stick with it. Heaven's Cloud Posted May 22, 2003 Share Posted May 22, 2003 It is pathetic how many people lack common grammar skills. I wonder if they realize that one day their going to have to compose a letter in the work place. They're won't be any hope for them and more than likely they will be fired from there job. Failed_Attempts Posted May 23, 2003 Share Posted May 23, 2003 Haha, yes, Sara. I heard this one boy say B-R-B when he was leaving his friends to go to the bathroom. I laughed, but found it insanely stupid. Pronouciation doesn't bug me, except when it's a real easy word, and they completely butcher it. @_@; It's messed up. . . Lady Asphyxia Posted May 23, 2003 Share Posted May 23, 2003
Originally posted by Lady Katana I remember when I used to have trouble saying pneumonic. That was before I found out the "p" was silent, lol. But the most trouble I've had with a word is "Mnelmoth." --;
Which is fair enough, considering it's spelt "Mnemolth". From what I can gather, it's pronounced something like "Knee-moth". Heh. I spell 'grey' and 'colour'. I've been to some writing sites where they've mentioned that -- and asked those who do spell 'grey' but everything else American. It turns out that a lot of people just think 'grey' is prettier than 'gray'. Go figure. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mitch Posted May 24, 2003 Share Posted May 24, 2003 I say it 'Nemolth,' which is probably wrong somewhere, but to me the 'M' would either make some noise, or be silent. So I choose it to be silent. 'Knee-moth,' eh? That's quite funny. I'll just call him Knee from now on. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They couldn't decided on whether it was "Muh-Foosh-nik" or "Mmm-Foosh-nik" (like "Mmmm, cookies!") I watch way too much Buffy... You know, I was never quite sure on how to pronounce my old user name (Endymion). I didn't know if it was "En-Dee-Mee-On," "En-Dai-Mee-On," or "En-Dee-Mai-On." It's the name of a mythological Greek character, and I never say those names right the first time. Speaking of, it took me weeks to figure out how to say Aphrodite, Persephone, and Antigone.
