Flashlight
I'm going to my first con a week from tommarow (Otafest, Calgary), and I'm going to Cosplay as Heero Yui from Gundam Wing - Endless Waltz. Since Otafest isn't really big, I decided to print the words "Heero Yui" on the back of my green shirt. I don't really know if that was a good idea or not, but the name is already printed. Should I look for a new shirt, or is that O.K.? I have a Jacket I can wear over the shirt (Looks really close to the one he wore in GW:EW), but I have to find it first. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
MillieFan
Wear the jacket, LOL. Unless you want everyone to laugh at the newbie. ~.^ I would say that if you're really thinking no one will recognize your character, that you could also make up, say an ID card in Photoshop with the character's stats and some other blather and pin it on the jacket. Other than that, I really can't help you. I really want to watch GW and GW: EW sometime (missed the series when it was on TV >_< GRRRR) but as I haven't yet, I really can't give tips on that. Plant_Angel
How obvious is your costume? You should also think about hair too, Heero has an easily recognisable hair style, but the difficulties in re-creating that will undoubtably prove troublesome. Do you look very much like Heero? I'd say go with the jacket if you feel its neccessary, dont worry about it. ^_^ MillieFan's ID card is a brilliant idea too! Can't say I know too much (or anything!!) from experience, we dont seem to get anime conventions in this country!
MillieFan
LOL, I want to cosplay sometime (as guess who ~.^) and I think I could do it rather well (maybe enough to even win the prize) but I can't do that. I mean, I don't have the money I'd need (around $100-200 for costume, actually maybe even less since my real hair and weight look similar enough that I wouldn't need wigs or padding) and I also can't let everyone know I'm a fan just yet-which going to a convention in a *strange* costume would do. Solid
sorry for the silly quastion but what is cosplay? some kind of fair or something?
MillieFan
Cosplay is dressing as a character from anime or an RPG for an anime convention (although sometimes it's done for movie premieres or at private parties).
Plant_Angel
Heh, its to late for me to keep it secret that Im a fan! I would like to cosplay as Vash, I am blonde and making a coat would be no trouble if I could get the material at a decent price ^_^! But seeing as my hair is long, Im short and Im female means Im at a bit of a disadvantage....Theres always Halloween!! That and I know someone who is gonna be Wolfwood........(and shes a girl! D'oh!) Kwai
How exactly do u intend to make the mechanical arm of Vash, and that black leather like thingy around his legs :p? And as for Wolfwood... hmm... *imagines a girl walking around with a giant cross on Halloween*... I dunno... wat would U think? People would think ur some kinda crazed exorcist -_-
MillieFan
Ohhhh. . .LOLOLLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, hehehehehe. . . .someone stop me, I'm laughing so hard that I can't see straight. Word to the wise: Don't cosplay on Halloween unless you like explaining yourself. I dressed as Kaeli from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (don't ask, I liked the game at that time :P ) in like my next to last Halloween (when I was around 10 or 11 years old) and NOBODY but nobody knew what I was or why. I felt so, so silly explaining myself. Oh well. Live and learn. ::sigh::
Kwai
My friend(die-hard anime freak) once made an angel costume from Evangelion for Halloween... He was the 3rd angel, Sachiel, and that thing was surprisingly well made cuz he had lights for the core, the 3 clawed arm, and he made it mostly from rubber/polyester. He succeeded in terrorizing the neighborhood(without him knowing it he couldn't see much through the eye holes), and was stopped by the patrolling police once or twice... it was also funny watching him try to explain what he was. House Wife: What are you? An alien? Friend: No, I'm actually an angel. House Wife: You're what? Friend: an angel House Wife: Young man, that is NOT an angel! Friend: Yes it is! House Wife: Out! Out! It was funny except that I got significantly less candy compared to my prior years...
Flashlight
Thanks for the help. I guess I'll wait and see if someone makes a "comment" about the name before I put on the jacket. Thanks.
MillieFan
Oh, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL again, I'm going to collapse laughing if this keeps up. Halloween and cosplay really don't mix. By the way, it should go without saying to not put realistic looking model weapons in your costume if you're cosplaying characters from Trigun or Cowboy Bebop. While a coat full of model derringers might just make your Meryl costume look even more detailed or a model semiautomatic might make you look more like Spike, it could also get you in some serious trouble with the police in some neighborhoods, LOL. ~.^ If you do choose to add model weapons to a cosplay costume (especially at night or in a bad neighborhood), be sure you have enough money for bail and possibly hospital bills. :P Also, there are many other ways to run into legal trouble when cosplaying. Basically, those would be: Carrying ONLY your character identification (especially in the form of a police badge or something similar: most police would think you were impersonating an officer and not an anime character) and not carrying your real, personal driver's license or identification along with it. Sneaking into a convention without paying hoping that you'll blend in with the other people who paid that look like you. This is really unethical, and a very good way to be at the least thrown out-and at worst arrested. Acting like a "baka" character. If you think harassing women/men or acting that way will help your chances of getting noticed as the best actor in people who chose your costume, it really won't-but it just may get you arrested. Acting like a drunk. Unless you can prove you haven't really been drinking at all, you could easily get arrested for public drunkenness or drunken driving.:drunk: Driving a car or other vehicle right up to the entrance of where you're going as part of your cosplay. With the security rules most public venues have now, you could be mistaken for someone up to no good. . .so even if your motorcycle looks *exactly* like one from anime or you've styled out your car to look like a spaceship-leave it parked in the designated areas for vehicles. Visiting banks or convenience stores not immediately nearby in costume, especially at odd hours. Keep in mind that the people there may not KNOW there's a cosplay event going on across town, and they may well think you're going to rob the place since robbers have used all kinds of costumes to disguise themselves in past robberies. While I don't want to worry anyone and while I want everyone to have fun, trust me, you'll have much more fun if you don't go to jail or have to deal with the police due to a misunderstanding. -^.^- By the way, are there any anime conventions in San Diego? Plant_Angel
Originally posted by Metatron How exactly do u intend to make the mechanical arm of Vash, and that black leather like thingy around his legs :p? People would think ur some kinda crazed exorcist -_-
I dont intend to carry any weopons, Vash's gun is far too customised to copy without making one and Im not sure card board would have the same effect......The mechanical arm will just be covered how he usually has it with a glove and leather with those straps. Ive got some leather trousers I can use though, course Im gonna need to make shin-guards, I can use my soaps for his boots but theyre kinda blue... I guess dressing up is either gonna look OK or very very very badly failed. I think I might fall into that latter category, but it wont matter too much, no one will know anyway! I got enough time to prepare for all the horrible embarressment, its only May. Are you saying Wolfwood DOESNT look like a crazed exorcist.....? That Angel costume sounds genius! I hope he kept it! I can see how explaining that might be difficult to people (ok, just about everybody) who dont know what it is that its an Angel. Anime seem to have some very unusual ideas as too what Angels are like!! Hmmm, it destroys, it kills, its scary......must be an Angel then! I mean, DUH! Hey, uh, thanks for the advice MillieFan! I'll remember that for when (if they ever) decide British fans are important enough for conventions....*~_~ But unfortunately, Halloween is all I got for now. kiddy_phenil
yeah, i'd wear the jacket if you can't get another shirt, i wouldn't worry too much about it though, a lot of people seem to know who heero is. metatron, you have to have your friend dress up again, and post a picture of it, it sounds freakin awesome! and as sad as it is, when ever you need something for a costume, get one of your older or less embarrasable friends to visit an adult store for ya :P

MillieFan
Oh, for that pervert: don't cosplay from H. That's even worse than cosplaying a normal anime pervert for legal trouble-especially if you're doing public "reenactments." There's something called "lewd and lascivious conduct," and it's a felony. Plant_Angel
Oh, I get it, sorry. Please excuse my ignorance. That thought would never have crossed my mind, I mean it would be cold!! I AM KIDDING! Geez, Im not a pervert, I really hope you dont mean me, I have a (complete lack of) reputation to uphold.
