Sara
*cough* Okay, I just saw someone change their rating of a picture from a 7.6/10 to an 8.3/10 and I'm sort of at a loss. I don't rate, and I ask that my pictures not be rated (ratings above 10/10 are grudgingly accepted), because I don't really like the way most people do this. How do you rate a picture? What exactly drops a picture from a 9.24 to a 9.17? If you think it would look better colored, do you rate it as an unfinished colored picture, or a finished back and white one? I'm just curious, because I really don't get it.
Epitome
Ok, Im the one that changed it from 7.6 to 8.3. I changed it because he drew them free hand and that makes a big difference. And yes, if one drawing is colored and another isnt, the coloredone could be rated more because it might look better. It all depends on the various ..."parts" of the picture. (i.e. shading, color, etc.) So you see, thats how you rate a pic or banner or whatever.
Sara
Ah, I was afraid you'd post here first... It wasn't anything against you, heh. It just reminded me that I'd been meaning to post this. Members who have been around longer know I don't like ratings. What I meant about the colored/not colored thing: If someone posts a finished picture, and Rater can find nothing wrong with it except, "You should color it," does Rater judge it as a finished black and white picture (which I would assume would be something close to ten) or drop the rating by 1.97 because it isn't colored? Am I making sense?
Epitome
Yes but of course I wouldnt take off .86 for example if there was an un-colored picture that was like awesome or even if it was colored and I would think it would look better un-colored I still would take off rating points. Do you see what I'm saying.
Semjaza
I refuse to give a number to an image, or anything a person creates. I've never done it here, that's for sure. These numbers are picked from the air for really no reason. I can understand making something a 9 or a 10, but the decimal point stuff is ridiculous. What makes something a 9.7 and not a 9.8? And really, why are so many things stuck in the 9s here anyway? I get the sense that people don't want to hurt others feelings, but I think it's best to be honest with art. For me, I try to say what I like and what I don't. Not "BWEEE that's cool 10/10!!" or "I don't get it." You have to give constructive criticism, because otherwise, what the hell is the point? That's what I think anyway, and it's why I like reading Piro's posts in here in particular. At the same time, I realize that I tend to write more than others here... and people tend to either ignore or gloss over my suggestions anyway. So in short, my point is that these numbers have no meaning behind them and I don't like giving or receiving them. By the way I love the title of this thread and the poll choices. Very nice :)
Epitome
I agree with Semjaza but the whole decimal thing, I dont know why I do it, I just do. But I always give constructive critiscm and never doubt someone about anything, but I will always be truly honest to an artist.
Sara
Do you see what I'm saying. Not really. I just don't see the point. "Oh, you didn't color this, so you get a 9.3 instead or a 9.8, because I never give perfect ratings anyway." That just...I don't get it. I think pictures should be rated as is...if it's nto colored, and you think it should be, reserve rating until (if ever) it is. Or simply look at it as a nice black and white picture.. If that's what it's intended to be, that what it should be judged as. You know, Michaelangelo, it's a really nice mural, but I think it would look better on the wall...
Epitome
I dont give lower scores depending on if its colored or not, I do it only on the drawing. But I actually do give perfect ratings too. If I like it enough, Ill give it a perfect rating. But I dont judge them on their color. But you have a good point Sara, so I think I am going to stop rating and only help out by giving constructive criticsm.
Semjaza
I think the complaint is that you (or whoever) are judging it based on what you think it should look like rather than what it is.

Heh. Piro's posts are very refreshing. ^_^ And I'm not saying you have to stop rating...this thread is more of a "Sara is trying to comprehend the mysteries of the art forum" thing.
Epitome
No thats not what I do at least, I rate it, but Im not going to rate anymore, based on what it "is" as you said. My brother is a drawer and he always asks me to help me rate his and I dont even have the picture he looked at so I can see how the drawing is, itself.
